Today is my last day working for one of the most horrid people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, let alone working for. I've worked for a Fortune 500 company whose entire executive board was sh*t-canned after a scandal, and I've worked for a small company whose owner ended up in jail for pissing off too many people. But this person, at an otherwise pleasant (if a little old-school) major company in a major industry, was the absolute worst human being I've ever had to deal with from day to day.

When I was first hired, I'd been out of work for a while after closing the facility at my previous employer. I'm well paid enough that it's hard to find comparable work in my area (not as cushy as that may sound to folks in high population centers). So I ignored the red flag when she refused to negotiate salary one cent when I hired in. She brought me in at the bottom of the company's range for the position. Why? Ego. Budget isn't planned by per-person cost but by an average cost per all people in the company at a certain level. So low-balling me netted her nothing but ego.

Soon after, the intimidation began. My previous work history was regularly belittled in front of the entire team (along with another new hire), and we were constantly told we didn't know how things worked in "the real world." She would pick on is for insignificant issues just to prove how much control she had. Our small department was tucked out of the way with no exposure to the rest of the company, so there was no oversight. When town hall meetings happened, we were all supposed to follow her in a line to attend them, like a row of obedient goslings.

Yeah, this was a thing. Every email had to have her copied, and no venting or jokes were allowed, ever. If someone from an outside dept intentionally left her off of an email (which was always the case because she was so disruptive), we were required to copy her on every reply. If we didn't, and someone did later, she would scroll down to see if anyone failed to copy her prior, and then come down on them and threaten their performance rating.

The problem was, she never actually read the content. For two years she would threaten my job for not answering her in whatever she thought a "timely manner" was that day. I would then politely point her to reply she'd received within minutes of the request. Then she'd snap, "Well, no wonder I didn't see it. I wasn't looking for an answer THAT fast."

If you worked from the time you're usually in to the time you usually left, it didn't matter if you even skipped lunch, she'd accuse you of clock watching. She'd lecture the whole team in meetings (average age: 45-50ish). But every single day she left at 4:15 on the dime. And she kept track of everyone else to the minute. If you told her you had to leave for a dentist appointment at two, she would question you if you left at 1:50 to get there on time.

Her one saving grace is also her biggest issue. She never comes to work (Yay!), and she lies about it constantly. I'm pretty sure everyone in her family has had every disease or ruptured organ humanly possible, and she's naturally the only one that can take care of them. She also "works from home" 2-4 days each week. Even when she claims she's taking PTO, she updates her voicemail remotely to say she's in the office but away from her desk.

The truth is she doesn't work. She just watches her company phone for a few minutes each day in case an important email comes in from a superior.

However, she thinks we're all doing the same thing. Even though we're here every day. We can ask for up to one day remote each week, which is a luxury, but the problem is that you have to ask and she isn't watching her goddamn email.

At one point two months ago, she decided to audit the team's PTO for the first time ever. She believed she'd found that all of us were cheating because the HR website said we had fewer hours left than the records we keep for her. So naturally, we were all lying thieves. She sent out notes to each of us saying to get it fixed or else.

All of us pointed out that she was looking at the wrong column on the website (carry over from last year), and that our PTO was fine. Her response, "Well, double check it anyway and report back to me by Tuesday."

In her mind, it was more likely that we were all liars like her instead of the possibility that she had made a mistake.

I hate this damn thing. Every Friday we have to type up what amounts to a book report of everything we did that week, what problems we ran into, what we're planning to do next week, etc. Naturally, she doesn't read these any more than she reads her emails (which would also tell her what the hell we actually do).

I'd often burn most of my Friday afternoons typing 6-7 pages of info for her, which she loved. But she'd only look at the last one or two before a performance review. Then I'd have to squeeze my actual job responsibilities into what time was left.

The other time she'd use those status reports was when she was pissed at someone and wanted to knock them down a peg. Or if she thought any employees were conspiring against her. (Secret: we all hate her, but we're too busy to conspire.)

She'd then go through some random status reports and try to find where someone had a conflict or challenge with the person(s) in question. She'd then OPENLY share that confidential information in order to create conflict that wasn't against her.

In her mind, that was how to maintain control - by making sure no one else trusted each other. Thankfully we all know her tricks, though a couple of the softer folks on the team still get shaken up by it.

The quickest way to piss her off is to copy her boss on anything, even if mundane. In more than three years, I've seen him twice. He doesn't really follow what we do at all because we do a damned fine job despite her mismanagement. So in his eyes, the boat shall not be rocked or watched.

But in her eyes, any communication with him is strictly off limits to us. Probably because if we get chatty with him, he may find out how unethical she is (He'd probably still just keep his head down.).

One Monday she tried to make up a new rule about flex time and just dropped it on us in a team meeting. Another teammate and myself immediately challenged her and asked why it was necessary. She immediately lied and said it was her boss's new policy. So we immediately fired back that we'd like to talk with him about what inspired the change. She then told us that we are under no circumstances to bring it up with him.

I asked if she's forbidding us. She said she can't forbid us but threatened that it would be a "career-limiting" move.

He visited later that week. She booked him solid with meetings so none of us could get time with him. It was adorable.

She says she's a straight-shooter all the time, and three years with her taught me to shoot right back or get shot. She only respects aggression, but unlike the real bulldog execs out there, she's also terrified of it.

I once told her that all guns shoot straight, but if you don't aim them first, all you do is cause collateral damage. It was an apt metaphor, but it slid right off of her.

In an hour I'm leaving an amazing team behind and pretty damned good work, but I've got something better lined up, and I'll never have to deal with this person again.

Working for her has sent my blood pressure, weight, and cortisol levels skyrocketing. But over the last two weeks, I've felt better, slept better, and been more pleasant to my wonderful and supportive family.

Before anyone asks, I went to HR about her twice, and I'm one person in a long line of people who've tried before. The company turns a blind eye. She keeps saying she's going to retire, and I think they just keep hoping she does.

But as I've told her chosen successor, why retire when you only work one day a week?

I have more stories, but I don't know if anyone will find this even remotely interesting. I suppose we'll see.

tl;dr - spent years working for a white collar tyrant, but mercifully today is my last day!

Don't let your life be ruined by professional bullies. Do everything you can to be as happy as you can.

Report her anyway. She can't hurt you now and you can only help your friends.

WE WANT MORE SO GIVE US MORE MOTHERFUCKER!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haha I guess I will! I typed this off the cuff on my phone. I may actually have to collect some memories for part 2.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You want to know if we want more??? WE DEMAND MORE

Since you are leaving, send an email to all the superiors about how horrible she is to the staff, cuts work etc, & cc her on it as per rules

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Last part earned the +1 :D

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Shitty work stories is what we crave and we demand more!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Biggest and (unfortunately saddest) lesson I learned is that HR does NOT work for you ...

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Take a dump in her desk drawer.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Too obvious. Hide prawns around her.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Surprised you didn't crush her on linkedin lol.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Classic narcissist.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Professional bully is a perfect description. She sounds insecure & miserable. I've dealt with this too & I'm happy you got out OP.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ever since i got my hidden camera i stopped having this problem well worth the investment

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

wait...isn't recording others w/o their permission illegal?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's the deal with HR, too? My sister had the same problem. You report, and it's like YOU are the problem, not the bully boss.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My blood pressure gone up reading this....

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah me too. I could do my own story but I'd rather forget about my bad time.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"A prince ought to inspire fear in such a way that, if he does not win love, he avoids hatred."

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My sister had a boss like that- she'd tell me stories and I'd so want to march into her office and punch the woman in the head.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My friends actually look forward to my rants. It makes me feel better and less like I'm part of the problem.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP I think you misunderstood! I wanted to punch my sister's boss, not my sister! I found your post entertaining in a stressful way!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Geez that was a long post, I started skimming it when it resembled "The IT Crowd". I'll favorite this so I can go back and read later.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'll keep it warm for ya.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've worked for a boss like this too, you made the right call. No job is worth your sanity, self-esteem or dignity.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thx. So said all of my coworkers, as well.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You must have really hated that bitch to type all that out

10 years ago | Likes 768 Dislikes 2

I hate her too now.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Part of the problem is a lot of people think being an asshole as a sign of a strong leader, it isn't.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I got halfway through and thought "yea she's a bitch. .. but this just drags"

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Of anyone I've spoken to/read about today, nobody deserves to bang out an online venting-session more than @OP

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Hopefully on office time too, just to stick it to them. Oh wait, i'm on office time.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I only post on or read Imgur while Im at work. At home it takes away from videogames and drinking with the roommates.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think I'm just catharting. Scrubbing loose the plaque of her influence! But yes, also hate.

Fuck, Karen! *inside joke*

You have the bosses email - send him a link to this page marked EXTREMELY FUCKING URGENT!!

+1 for "catharting". Perfectly cromulent word.

10 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 0

+1 for cromulent. That's my shit nigga

10 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

+1 for nigga. I very much enjoyed your speech

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

+1 for saying shit I fucking love shit like that

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

+1 for saying "I" That's my favorite person.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

+1 We have a new admin at my work who's a fucking micro-manager. It took me a couple months to see it, but now it's really bugging me.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Find boring stuff for them to micromanage. Let them deal with the details so you can get work done. Or play Boss Pong with your coworkers.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like the gun metaphor

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I can't even imagine working like this. I'd of just told her to fuck off right from the get go. Or quit on the spot.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Make sure to do an internal email to everyone including her boss about all the things you covered here. CC EVERYONE. drop the mic.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I had a manager like this once. Key words, had. See I have no issues threatening people as much as I'm threatened, she was fired.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I had a boss like that once. I quit after 4 months. When I told my staff I was leaving, they all cried because they were so happy for me.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It sounds like we had the same boss. Except mine worked (works) for a university. I won a grievance against her. And it was sweet justice

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's good to hear when representation works out for the better. Too many people have none.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Then you should have gone above her and reported her...

10 years ago | Likes 98 Dislikes 4

Tried. Several have tried. Nothing happens. A real dropped ball on HR's behalf.

10 years ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 4

Problem is, if one of boss delivers figures there ain't a problem. I learned that the hard way, threatn to quit and quit two weeks later..

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Send an email over HR's head. She is a liability to the company.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not really. Her section may be unhappy but they are productive. As long add they are, nothing will be done.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Until some disgruntled subordinate gets fed up, documents her behavior, and sues the company like OP should.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It doesn't sound like anything she's done is illegal. That's why HR won't get involved.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One thing ive learned that sucks dick is that hr is there to protect the company not the employees

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

HR doesn't exist to protect you...it exists to protect the company. Learned that the hard way...

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

your story really make me appreciate my bosses

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Scene from wanted on your last day, Word for word, then?

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

You may have something there...

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

"Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, you're cool"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And fuck you, I'm out!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What's she gonna do, fire you? Give her the telling off you've clearly been wanting to. Even write a similar speech that hits all the points

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Telling her off achieves nothing. If you're going to go nuclear, make sure everyone above her knows how little she works.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

And, better yet, if she tries to be vindictive and try to get you fired from other jobs, you get to use the company for big bucks.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

dude you just gave me the perfect idea.. op, print these fucking images out and stick them around the office the day of your departure

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd shovel dog shit for a living as long as all of the people are amazing.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

One of my more enjoyable job was washing dishes. Sure the work itself sucked but no stress and shooting the shit was decent enough

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed. I worked at McDonalds for a year as my first job and it was actually amazing. I actually miss it sometimes.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hell yes.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I do clean dog shit for a living but its for an amazing vet and his wife at an animal hospital. I hang out with dogs and avoid humans

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is the problem I'm having now. I love what I do, but the people I work with are crap. My boyfriend has told me to find whatever job 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can, even if I'm flipping burgers for minimum wage, to keep me from having to deal with the stresses of my current boss/coworkers.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You could always report her to a watchdog agency, see if you can initiate some type of audit. Bosses get scrutinized very closely when that

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

watchdog comes by

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

watchdog comes by, especially if there are claims of a Hostile Work Environment or any kind of harassment. Source; HR person who cares

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately HR is bought and paid for wherever you go. Never met any HR person worth a damn.

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

Idk man Toby Flenderson was pretty cool

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry that's been your experience. I only worked at a company with HR once and it was excellent.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

that's why we have unions. or, had.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The person you should turn to w management problems is your union rep. They're paid w your dime & exist to help you, not to cover boss' ass

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is completely true!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

HR exists to cover the company's ass, not help the employees

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Bought and paid for? Like.. they are employees of the company? No shit?

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

They're waaaaay overpaid to conveniently ignore blatant issues.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I work for a major corporation. All HR reps are at corporate so when they come to town it's like the inquisition is in town.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I agree with the overpaid part, but my experience was the opposite. They selectively exaggerate mundane issues.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

they have to justify their existence but they don't actually want to do any work..

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0
