I already downloaded all my data and completely deleted all meta platforms. I will not participate in the systematic dismantling of truth any longer. #FuckZuck
Saw this post again, and I'm game. A personal act of rebellion, small maybe (especially considering how often I don't use these apps anyways), but I like it, and don't even have to leave my house. But, then, and maybe I'm just getting to that age ("old") but WTF?! Can't log out of Messenger from the app - had to do it through Meta/Facebook? Can't log out of WhatsApp app on my phone AT ALL - it's just not an option??!! Had to delete my account just to "log out". WTF?! /rant over
I wonder about people believing Bluesky is a viable replacement for Twitter? Twitter was and is bad. Bluesky, too. It is already incompatible to Mastodon, which. Same IT industry monopoly game as usual.
But what then? Use E-Mail, Signal or Matrix. Avoid social media, including Imgur.
Matrix is an open-protocol for Instant-Messaging, more complicated than Signal but far more powerful. France and German army use it already. They need to stop using Cisco stuff 🤭
Serious question: I don't want to support this kind of behavior in corporations, but I use these apps to stay connected and communicate with people in my life. What are comparable alternatives? I live in a rural area far from friends and family, and I can't keep up with everyone via phone/text/and or email. I'll be very isolated. Ideas?
Fucking newbs…we’re well beyond the one week boycott stage. If you think this will have any impact, you’re kidding yourself. Delete that shit permanently and spend some time thinking and researching about how you can contribute to actual change.
No no no. Leave NOW and never go back. A one-week boycott will not accomplish a damn thing. Please, people, do not repeat the mistakes everyone made with Twitter. Meta is a Nazi platform now, and nothing can fix that.
and there’s the crus of it. In today’s world, unless you’re employed and making good money by someone else, or rich already, the rest of us are dependent on what’s out there to find an audience for our work. Be at writing, art, or music. These are areas that require time and effort to get an audience/following . this is the reality of today’s creative Enterprises. The days of publishing houses discovering writers and new work and, putting a publicity machine behind it, are long gone.
I got rid of my account six years ago after Zuckerberg was arrested for raping hamsters at that pet store. I mean if you are so depraved that you keep breaking into pet stores even after they convict you, why would anyone stay on your platform?
I deleted Facebook 8 years ago as Mango Mussolini was taking the oath of office the first time. On the night of this election, as the results were being announced, I deleted all the rest of my social media. All Meta gone. All MS media, gone. I won't be back to any of them.
You can backup the entirety of everything that you ever did or, er, was done to you on your account. Everything. Then delete it. Been 4 years I think for me. Best thing I could have ever done for my mental health. Anyone that wants to get a hold if me can easily do so if they really wanted.
I wish I could. Unfortunately, I'm a writer and nowdays all marketing, contacts and new projects come via FB. Many Publishers want to know how many platforms you're on, how many followers and how active you are before considering your submissions.
I honestly have no sympathy for you. All of this is by design and every excuse not to just makes it more legit. Fucked if you play the game, fucked if you're not.
If your job required you to use Gmail and you were very against Gmail do you quit that job? It’s hard enough being in the arts period and now you are more or less victim blaming? Unless you are already established like brandon sanderson, you don’t really have an option unless you just don’t want to be a writer. The ONLY way it changes is if the big names step in a change it but even they really don’t have the “fuck you” money necessary to screw over publishers.
precisely. And all I am is a writer in my soul, and in my heart. For most of us we write because we love it not because we make money from it. The lucky ones sometimes get to a place where they can make a living from it. The days of when Stephen King became a powerhouse are long gone most publishing now except for the three big ones are small little indie publishers, and they use social media to find, and invite writers to projects.
Imma tell you the same thing I told Twitter users: slowly make the switch. Going cold turkey is not possible, it starting a presence on a better platform, informing your current and potential future clients that you want to make the switch and finally when you have the following you need on the other platform making the switch final.
Also, both Twitter and Facebook are largely populated by both bots and people who you probably really don't want to be your clients anyway.
Yeah, that's what really sucks. Friend if mine has a home inspection business. Google ads, insta, word of mouth, dedicated Business website, Business cards, relationships with realtors.... 99 percent of his first contact with clients is through Facebook.
I wish I could. After the Cambridge Analytica news, I had already been done with their shit (I get nothing from Facebook besides carefully curated pictures of other peoples lives, at least Youtube used to give me good music recommendations) and annoyed at my doomscrolling, so I did my "I have no willpower" trick, which involves smashing my face into my keyboard, copying the random string, and then pasting the string into new password.
This helped, a lot, I had to recover password every time I
had no willpower. I went from multiple times per day to once every six months or so. Several years pass. Okay, time to delete!
Try to recover password, it's been so long and I'm in a different town on a different internet provider that I have to jump through hoops. It says it'll send a code to a friend I'll select (from a limited selection) and I'll have to get it from them and log in. The friends: two people I only know online; I can't remember the third; the fourth was my oldest friends
*father* who I haven't talked to in *years*; and the fifth was a coworker, who's the most absolutely annoying fuckwit I work with.
Well. Fuck *that*. So a few more years go by. I kinda still want to get into my account, just to delete it, still. I try again. As a note, I still have access to the OG email account I used for the facebook, but recovery to email is now not allowed. My choice now? *Send them my fucking state issued photo ID.*
Facebook messenger is a lot better for group conversations than group texts. Especially because I don’t have everyone’s numbers and android and apple devices are vert shitty at communicating images between each other. Have you noticed that if you send a picture to android from iphone or the other way around, it comes through pixelated every time?
Facebook, Facebook Messenger (now known just as Messenger), Whatsapp, Instagram, Giphy, Oculus, Threads, and something like 90 other random companies are owned and operated by Meta (and Mark Zuckerberg).
Facebook does own a VR property - they bought out Oculus, and are now making a line of Quest VR HMDs. They make good hardware, and given their competition's pricing, are probably taking a loss on sales.
I suspect they are doing this to lock users into a VR ecosystem in a bid to become the VR steam, where you can't play anything good unless you do it on their hardware and use their platform to buy it. They have funded a number of game studios with deals that they will be exclusives.
All my family and family are only on whatsapp (well, some probably on IG too, but that's worse), so unless I cut contact with them I'm pretty much stuck with that.
I’m struggling with that as well. WhatsApp is the main form Of communication for anyone outside of the US. Trying to convince my family to switch over to Signal
Use Facebook containers and other tools to avoid their tracking. Use unlock origin, use non-chromium browsers, use alternative search engines etc. Don't cede your data privacy protections just to use an app. There are absolutely ways to mitigate the privacy threat to you from apps and platforms. But just like with anything else you have to put in some work to do so.
Yup. I've done all that and continually monitor their changes. You should be aware that Facebook changes settings consistently so they can avoid privacy restrictions.
I'm not sure you know how whatsapp works, but everything client side is run through the app. You must have the app running on an active device or no messages for you. And I don't want to run it on an emulator on my laptop or something dodgy like that because I am dependant on it to contact practically anyone in my life.
My point is that while you may not be able to limit WhatsApp specifically (although you absolutely can do full device DNS blocking), you absolutely can set up your device and other apps to protect you if you're going to continue to use WhatsApp. Using WhatsApp is not an excuse for not doing your due diligence to protect your privacy.

Why just a week? Inactivate and permanently delete those accounts, they’re shit anyway

Already deleted my accounts and deleted the apps bye bye Mark Fuckerburgh.

I had an account I used for work since I do Cyber Security. And fuck it, my job can make a corporate one, I shut mine off and it can rot.

I would have, but I didn't have any accounts to delete.

Users of Reddit already tried this. Didn't do much.

I only use WhatsApp. And I've already gone a week without using with no problem. I left Facebook over 10 years ago.

WhatsApp is now basically email. it's full of messages from companies and delivery updates and shit.

Pretty sure John Oliver warned us of this

No. Log out PERMANENTLY. If you use any of these then YOU are part of the problem. Don't tell me you can't. That's a lame excuse.

These don't work cuz you give the companies an end date and they just brush it off. Delete your account

What are they gonna do if you delete it? Not talk to you? Just let em know they can reach you on signal, heh.

My family is in Germany , its how we communicate .

Yeah I can get rid of all EXCEPT WhatsApp - it’s the only way us oldies keep in touch now

It was the same for me with Threema. But when I consistently deleted my WhatsApp, at least some people followed.

When I did it, no one switched over and that's kinda how I lost most of my contacts.
