She was known to be mentally ill, so the state is responsible for this too.
lAmGnomeAnn
Absolutely ghastly. The mother clearly was not mentally fit to have a goldfish, let alone a child. Even if you just have plants, a sane person would have someone come visit for that amount of time away. So sad.
TheMrDomino
This woman left her child with intent knowing full well that the child would be dead upon returning. She even (pathetically) tried to act like she cared by changing the corpse's diaper? She's getting getting far more mercy being closed away in an environment where you still have food and water and medical care. She should suffer the same fate as her daughter, starvation until death. There should be no mercy for those that visit horror and pain upon innocent children. None at all.
RoymanHenryburg
Hold on, I need to go hug my kids.
VibratingNipples
I hope that vacation was worth it

HangingOnTheEdgeOfTomorrow
The same world it's always been. People have probably been doing this since the beginning of time, we just haven't had Ring cameras and such to capture it. The darkness was always there, and the shadows only become more profound the brighter the light we shine.
DukeDarkwood
In the ancient days, people would leave unwanted children out in the wilderness to die of exposure. And, even excluding this woman's case, I'm not going to wager against the likelihood that it's still done in places - although, hopefully it's at least criminalized everywhere so that any practitioners aren't being condoned by the law.

She's going to have a deservedly bad time in prison, but that in no way could ever make up for what she did.
ThePretentiousGentleman
Just gonna go hug my toddler as tight as I can and never let go.
Direkt4
Me too. Good on you.
feryooday
Why didnt this happen to my mom. I was like 5 and watched several life cycles of guppies being born in the fish tank (so at least weeks). oh right, I unfortunately lived.
feryooday
she left some oats and sugar and told me I was a horse at least, so that’s nice, right?
Mandarinduckmama
Wow. You poor little thing. That's incredible. You certainly earned with survivpr medal. How are you now? Do you have the support you need to put that behind you? Anyone can give birth, even the worst people. And sometimes, they're our parents, right? So much misery out there. Be gentle and kind with yourself...always.
feryooday
I’m doing pretty awful, lots of mental health issues. but I have a good support network so I’m still kicking. fuck people that abandon and neglect their children. thanks for your kind words
AyatollahBahloni
SquirtVonnegut
Everyone is enraged by this, as they should be. Let us also extend that outrage to the scores of children in currently being starved in Gaza and not entertain anyone justifying such cruelty. The true horror of what this child endured should be recognized regarding all children who meet this fate.
jimmythehat1
What kind of horrible friends did she have that not a single one was like, hey you want to check in on your kid or ask who is watching the kid?
BleachItsWhatsForDinner
WTF????
CheeseborgarSoop
What in the absolute fuck did she think would happen?? The baby would just fend for itself? Cook some instant ramen and put on Law and Order?
Hextant
Looks like she had severe mental health issues before she had the baby and they didn't even think to question a suicide attempt as recent as 2023 before sending her home with a baby. Obviously I'm not excusing what happened, but I think she just genuinely did not have the mental capability to process what would happen.
Extremely fucked up the hospital allowed her to leave with the baby without calling someone else to make sure the baby was checked up on and would be safe.
tokenhooker
Nah. She even added a few days to the trip, went and saw a dude in Detroit and stayed with him a few extra days. She knew wtf She was doing.
Hextant
Maybe. But I really don't think so.
You'd be absolutely shocked the kind of shit that untreated mental illness does to your brain. Add to that that post-partum depression is literally proven time and again to have such a drastic effect on some individuals that they don't even see their baby as a living being, and it's NOT out of maliciousness - they literally just cannot fathom that this thing is the same thing that was growing inside of them - and you have a recipe for absolute disaster 1/
Hextant
when you decide to just ... ignore the very obvious signs that the brain is already unstable.
To me, her extending the stay was not intentional neglect - there's no way the infant would have lived that long, and if she was just avoiding it, why would she just go back? She could have kept finding other things to do.
More likely, she just didn't have the capacity to consider the infant at home, didn't really register that there was something dependent on her at all, and just did something 2/
Hextant
that made her feel okay in the moment.
I want to be clear: I am not defending what she did. I am not saying we should take pity on her. I am not saying anything is more unfortunate for her than it was for that poor baby.
All I'm hoping to get across with this is that we severely neglect mental health, and then when the side effects of them show, we immediately rush to, " that was CLEARLY on purpose! " and as a result, we do not take mental health seriously. We don't treat it with the 3/

As a new father, words can't describe how terrifying this thought is. That a human parent could do this to their child. Life in prison well deserved.

As an Ohio "resident" (in the same sense as criminally insane asylum patients are politely referred to as "residents"), I'd like to apologize for Cleveland and its surrounding area. They're usually not like this.

Imgur is for what the users want, and this has enough uovotes for the front page. Its not just cute cats and memes.
TsubakiTragic
You should have been around for Vietnam. It was the images reported on the nightly news, every night, that finally made politicians get off their ass and do something. These days, all you get is a snippet in social media and the horrors that are out their are hidden from view.

WaPo's paywall is Javascript, so you can just disable Javascript on their site and read it freely.
IsolatedAsshole
.
TI99Kitty
So THAT's why I don't see a paywall on WaPo, but people complain about paywalls when I share articles from there.
ctotheg2
Thank you very kindly for explaining that detail. How do I do that on IPhone?
delpharseven
Install Firefox, install the uBlock Origin ad blocker for Firefox. Use uBO to toggle JS on and off on a per site basis.
mrputter
Huh. I don't have Javascript enabled, but all I get is:
delpharseven
I use uBlock Origin to disable JS, so that might be a NoScript thing. I actually have uBO set to block all JS on all sites, then whitelist the minimum required to make a site work. Aside: I assume the cookie icon is a cookie management add-on, but which?
mrputter
(Yes, I could dig into the console and see if I could rewrite or just enable/disable certain parts of the Javascript to get the right balance, but honestly... I don't care that much.)
NotThePoint
FYI, the world has always been this horrifying, it just wasn't widely publicized. People have always been trying to remove the odor from well water.
Comet260
It's not only publicized, it's publicized for profit.
NotThePoint
Yeah, that's why I'm getting The Sulfur Eliminator... I'm tired of well water odor!

thats not true. in my country (europe) if sombody hear a toddler screaming for 1 day day they just konck the door. if nobody answer, they just knock down the door. if not possible, they call firefighters and fuck your door: toddler is now safe. never ever heard of shit like this. wtf usa, y'all are in a bad situation
Feralkyn
Did the neighbors ignore screaming? I just assumed nobody could hear it. There's been a lot of bad shit that happens in Europe too.
heerobya
Many of us don’t live on top of neighbors, you’d never hear a thing… yay American suburbanism
tetondons
And if there are no close neighbors to hear the child? A Sherlock Holmes quote is in order here. It has nothing to do with your country, but rather how he found sparsely populated areas terrifying, despite have a quaint peaceful facade. Too long to paste here, but #4 https://www.bestofsherlock.com/top-10-sherlock-quotes.htm
feryooday
My neighbors could be screaming at the top of their lungs right now and I doubt I’d hear it. we don’t all live in smashed houses or apartment complexes.
newsguycraigevans
Europe is a country now? I need to update my maps!
Cucumberclouds
This same thing happened in England and the woman was sentenced maybe 2022 or near then.
fake40nedeso
That's just not true. You seem to forget how national news outlets still are (and have to be). There is very little intra European news, 95% is domestic. There was such a or similar case in Germany in 22 or 23. However it didn't even got picked up by national news outlets, let alone having been mentioned in any international news outlet.
hetnkik999
A: The whole wells quote is meant to imply this is a problem that's been going on for CENTURIES.
B: Like, literally just Google any country and a baby being left home alone. Here's one!: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9871273/Teen-mother-19-left-starving-baby-11-times-two-months.html
C: The fact you think Americans would do nothing if they heard a baby crying over a long period of time is both ignorant and stupid.
NotThePoint
Not to burst your bubble but... the part about the well was a sarcastic remark about the advertisement that appeared at the bottom of the image. Sorry. :P
However, I thought you had a great interpretation.
hetnkik999
That's funny. As far as misunderstandings about dead kids go, anyway.

i'm sorry for making that looks like a cultural/race issue. I'm sorry that i was shocked, i'm a father of two. I'm sorry that i see real deep issues coming from USA and my simple mind address it as problem of lack of empathy. i nontheless apologize for oversimplifing.
hetnkik999
Definitely deep issues in the USA. Generally abandoning children at home or neighbors not caring aren't part of those issues.
piratesecretservice
you're right. my bad i don't have a punchline on this :-(
MoschopsUK
"she struggled with mental health issues and had tried to kill herself by overdose in 2023, after which she was given antidepressants." There we go. This was a terrible act and there must be consequence but this is not someone in full possession of their faculties making coherent. informed, sensible choices.
mllecamill3
Exactly, the prison system is total trash in the US. Its a breeding facility for crime. Look at europe, totally the opposite.
Malloon
Europe is a very diverse place. There is even a broad difference within the EU. Please, hold up the examples to be emulated, but don't assume they are ubiquitous.
mllecamill3
Ok, I was talking about germany, france, netherlands, scandinavia etc. ^^
alwaysacleric
What the fuck. I’ve been on antidepressants for years, they saved my fucking life and turned it around.
truemetalman
And they affect everyone differently, which is why they always come with the big bold warning of immediately contacting your doctor if you experience suicidal thoughts. I'm not saying that's what happened here, but just because they help one person doesn't mean they do the same for others.
alwaysacleric
Hey man, I get it. It’s an easy scapegoat these days. We can just pretend like nothing horrible and tragic ever happened before the 50’s
Onlyhereforthelaughs
But how many days does that excuse work? She what, checked the cameras every day or so and thought, "Oh, she's sleeping." This is not someone that should have a child.
Isorikk
Without knowing full details I can tell you depression and antidepressants don't impair your judgement, just your will
downvoteifyouhatekittens
Imagine trying to defend someone who painfully killed their child. They were able to plan out a 10 day holiday, but couldn't plan care for their child, you are disgusting
Swedishbouldering
Anti depressants font suppress depression. It surpresses all emotion. It's horrifying to se what they can do to people.
Cinammontoastcrunch
I say this in regards to basically anyone with a disorder or illness that makes them do bad things: knowing their illness makes it make sense but does not excuse it
Nightchime
And it can help inform us how to prevent similar situations going forward.
BrdCdn
Sure, but I hate when it's used to lighten sentences or get out of punishments.
Malibloo
As much as I want to agree with this, one has to be very far gone to imagine someone can't take minimal sensible choices in regards to such helpless life. What you mentioned does not suffice or excuse.
ManOCheese
Yes, they do have to be very far gone. Why else do you think people do these things?
Malibloo
You can't have it both ways and it's not that black and white. If a complete recluse ends up doing terrible things, is it society's fault for mising this problem? When you'd literally have zero clue of there being anything going on at all?
10 fucking days, and she still says "but my life was hard too".
CaveCanem
and not only that, but to never have second thoughts about that decision over the course of 10 days
duhqueenmoki
post partum depression. that is all
MoschopsUK
Agreed. It is not an excuse. I did say that they must be a consequence. I propose that there is potentially a difference in mens rea between cold-heartedly and with intellectual rigour choosing to let a young child starve or dehydrate to death, and doing the same while of unsound mind.
Malibloo
Well, it's definitely true she wasn't sound enough to take the correct decision, otherwise she wouldn't've. One just can't know what went through her mind other than what she directly claimed in the article, "Nobody knew how much I was suffering" just bleeds narcissistic sociopathy imo. As much as I want people to heal, I figure some people can't be.
kerrigan778
She had a toddler, post partum depression can be insanely powerful and she obviously had zero support.
kerrigan778
It takes a village, this was a failure of society as much as of her.
Malibloo
Ask yourself how many steps it took before it got to a baby being neglected to death, and then wonder how many of those steps were ones we as a society could've affected, and which one she could have. If you're sound of mind, you'll realize the scales are heavily tilted towards her.
That's not to say society isn't still partially responsible, but you can't shift the weight of the blame like that.
kerrigan778
I actually can, the mental cost of the nuclear every family is an island philosophy of the last century is incalculable. No human was meant to try to raise a child alone, that is not how we evolved.
billymaditsdone
The part that makes this strange is that she was ok enough to schedule a 10 day vacation. Vacation to where, I wonder. And if she could do that, how difficult would it have been to leave the child with police or a family member.
lovemetenderlovemesweet
There are pics from that vacation where she was smiling and seemed to be happy hugging friends etc.
billymaditsdone
I'm going through depression at the moment and started on prozac...but it scares me to think I could do something this horrible if I ever attempted to own a dog or accidentally get someone pregnant
HoneyBunchesOfStoats
if it makes you feel any better the article says she stopped taking her antidepressants before she did this, it wasn't a side effect or anything like that. Some antidepressants increase your risk for suicide for a short time after you first start taking them, but to my knowledge there's no antidepressant that makes you more likely to kill someone else, either deliberately or through neglect.
TopCommenter
The reason for the suicide risk uptick on some antidepressants is that they sometimes give the person enough motivation/energy to act (when before they were paralyzed with ennui) without increasing their mood. I could see this as an outcome of that - suddenly having the energy to do SOMETHING (try to escape the situation making her miserable), but not at all the right thing. Obviously I am not endorsing this.
HoneyBunchesOfStoats
Again, she had gone off of her medications several months before the incident and there are no antidepressants known to increase your risk of harming someone else. I agree that she obviously had something horribly wrong with her, but her medication was not the problem.

Sorry, people who don't respect life stop being people, and as such don't deserve the air they breathe, or any further of my attention.
Malibloo
To the idiot who has no idea what bullshit the tolerance paradox is about, people who don't value life shouldn't be considered worthy of life themselves.
UnattendedDeviant
That's not true. We have different levels of crimes based on the death of the victim. Itcan range from accidental death to manslaughter to 3 different levels of murder even.
schlummi
The three aspects for punishing criminals is: 1) to teach them a lesson, so they won't repeat their crimes 2) to scare other criminals from commiting the same crime 3) to create "organised peace", so people don't feel the need to take the law into their own hands (lynching). 1) means that some who accidentally killed someone does not need to be punished. 2) same 3) is the reason why there is in such cases a punishment. Or in other words: intent is the biggest factor, not the harm caused.
schlummi
Otherwise you'd get the same sentence for trying to kill someone with a gun (but the victim survives with minor injuries) and a fender bender which resulted also in minor injuries.
CaldariBob
We judge actions based on intent. We punish based on the level of harm.
MoschopsUK
"We judge actions based on the harm they cause others." By this philosophy, an accidental death and a murder must be judged equivalent. I reject your philosophy of justice.

So, the inaction of the community in ensuring she had suitable supports for her medical issues that contributed to the death of a child should be judged how exactly?...

realrealluckless
For starters, robust mental health services and childcare services?
PrairieFarmGirl
And Personal Health! She may have not been in a position to have a child in the fist place, and was unable to have that choice.
