Tell your story when you are alive, otherwise other people will decide your "truth" for you. This lady might have tomcatted around, or maybe she was assaulted and fled her abusers, or maybe she had a miscarriage or abortion, or maybe she was a terrible person. All we know is her kids hate her. We don't know if they hate the dad who abandoned them too. But they wish her to rot in hell for leaving them, which makes me think their grandparents, her parents, probably really sucked too.

Exactly this. We do not know anything about her reason for leaving or the circumstances of her life. We do know that the obituary makes no mention at all about the kid's father or uncle being involved in raising them, which lends credence to the assumption that there was more going on than just "some skank leaving her kids".

We don't know that. Given the time period it was possible that Dennis was seen as being unable to raise two small children on his own by society. Social stigma around single fathers was pretty high back then (still is, to be honest) and him being a single dad because his wife ran off with another man, his brother no less, was likely a massive source of shame. Of course, I could be completely wrong and he may have really abandoned them. Who knows?

You know now that we all know the stats on sexual assault, it’s not incoceivable that her brother in law raped her, got her pregnant. She could not face living with him in her social orbit. She left the kids with her parents so they wouldn’t be away from their dad and moved away from her rapist.

This is one of those British things that didn't translate well to the US... It's not supposed to be about that, it's supposed to be about letting go of it all so they don't have any further negative influence on your life. Being polite about it was a way to shut down the conversation. It's meant to come with a warning look at least.
If someone violates the 'shut up about dead asshole' rule then all bets are off, let 'em have it. You don't have to be polite if they're not.

A few years ago, a childhood classmate died in a motorcycle accident. He was generally known as an asshole (he even worked as Trump's chef at one point), so when another friend announced "[The asshole in question] apparently died. Cheers to that!", everyone cheered in agreement.

When my grandmother died we were asked to do an obituary, we knew she would have loved "and now she's dead" however the paper wouldn't allow it and another family members obituary was selected.

there is an old book called speaker for the dead, from the enders game series, in which there was a public movement for speakers who would investigate the life of the dead person and give a realistic eulogy rather than just some positive comments.
it had enough of an impact on my life when i was young that in my will i have a location for my own self made version i wish to be made public to those who care. i update it each year on my bday. kind of a blunt and realistic short story of my life.

I have to disagree with this. If you don't separate the art from the artist then every work of art/music/literature that you like is conditional on you not knowing enough about the artist. Picasso and Beethoven drove lovers/family to suicide; David Bowie had sex with a 14 year old girl; Caravaggio murdered a man; John Lennon beat his wife Cynthia. Artists are often shit human beings even though the work they produce can be sublime.
