The closest I've been to lightning is about 20 feet. I can't describe it adequately. You're hit everywhere, every hair stands on end, the air rushes past, and then, it's all different, the air feels, smells, and tastes different. I was in a tent, and I nearly pissed myself. In to morning, we walked over to the tree, a thick tall stout old pine, it looked like it exploded, bark and cambium everywhere, most of the limbs fell, in a perfect circle around it. Indescribable, these words fall short.
I've been 50 feet of a strike in a forrest. You can feel the charge just before. It's a weird feeling. Just enough time to think, "huh, this feels weird..." BAM!
Ages ago in summer i was in my appartment, window open and listening to the rain falling and the thunder coming when suddenly a lightning strike must have come down in my area, possibly into the church tower a couple of hundred meters away.
I have never heard such a loud bang in my life, i nearly fell out of the couch from shock.
yep, got half the thought of 'I've never seen lightning hit at that angle out' then the river exploded, and the thought collapsed on itself like it was wrapped in primacord
If that was a direct strike (looks like It hit behind her) there is an approximately 90% survival rate. In my opinion it is quite unlikely you watched someone die.
Burns and permanent nerve damage still suck so try not to get struck by lighting.
That said, lightning can travel along the surface of the ground with the strike. If it then goes up one leg and down the other on the animal it can travel through and stop their heart
PantsAreForTheWeek
Fuck those places in particular, eh?

The guy watching TV was lucky. We had lightning hit a tree down the block from us and our TV was fried.
Goshitsnicehere
Ooooh a thunderstorm. I know, I'll hold an electrical device and talk to it. Nothing Bad's gonna happen.

That one at 0:46 was actually a wave motion gun.

Working in a new construction house running wires. It got struck with us in it and felt the buzz for about 15 minutes. Ears rang for days.

It must have been super loud. What a great bar story to tell though!

If I didn't know better, I would say that our planet was actively trying to kill us. We probably deserve it, upon reflection.

The second one was an intentional explosion and not lightning. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/lightning-striking-a-river/
MrStealYourGiF
Ah, thanks, I was wondering how the lightning was finding a better route to ground along the surface instead of down.

Hawkgirl203
Did w see a horse die too?

No, the horses were fine :) and they got a treat later.

That said, lightning can travel along the surface of the ground with the strike. If it then goes up one leg and down the other on the animal it can travel through and stop their heart
itwasababyox
But these horses were okay though
IndianJoe
And they got a treat. In the far away farm where it is always sunny and there is no lightning strikes like that.
ByThePowerOfSCIENCE
I played it frame by frame. She turns right and heads back, so it must have hit the tree behind her.
IndianJoe
Getting outside in a thunderstorm while holding a metal pole, what could go wrong? That's a prime Darwin Award candidate.
Green11ndys
My neighbor was struck by lightning 3 different times in his life, cancer is what got him in the end.

Can't these people hold a damn camera steady! Yeesh!
SpeakerToLampposts
If lightning hits that close to me, the camera is not at the top of my priority list.

I wanna see you hold a camera steady when a bolt of lightning hits yards away from you. Lol
