Alternative punishments have always been on the table in the U.S. It was (sadly) extremely popular during the Vietnam war to allow criminals to choose to serve in the military in exchange for avoiding jail time.

I feel like alternative punishments are often the better option. Jailtime for minor crimes means debt and rarely change after jailtime. Alternative punishments are a great way to change that, so long as the alternative isn't ridiculous like "military enlistment"

that was my first thought, and if she does get hired I pity whoever gets stuck working with her. Sentencing her to work in fast food feels good, but IMO it would be better for everyone if they sent her to therapy instead.

Pretty sure it will only take a week or 2 for her discover it's hell. Not sure if she'll ever get the other part though. I hope she does. I imagine her having lunch with her friends later, saying "did you know the drones behind the counter are actually people???". Sigh, one can dream.

2 months. 20 hours a week. The poor 17 year old she hurled her food at was working 65 hours a week. The worst part? The absolute worst part? When the judge asked her for words prior to sentencing, she said "If I showed you how my food looked and how my food looked a week later from that same restaurant, it's disgusting looking" ... she still doesn't get it. She still thinks there is a level of quality of food that would justify a burrito bowl to the face

Honestly knowing that it's only two months (and only 20 hours a week) kinda gives her the opportunity to work her ass off and finish thinking she's just better than everyone else in the industry. Worst part of a lot of jobs is the endless grind.

A (very) small number of judges engage in karmic punishment. At sentencing, they give the guilty party the option to either serve conventional jail time, or take the alternative that's tied to what they were convicted of. It does not run afoul with "cruel and unusual punishment" because the defendant is the one making the choice and not the judge. A common example of this is someone convicted of littering having to clean up garbage for X-number of hours instead of a fine/probation/jail time.
