Valve repaired 15 years ago but I've played hard and now it needs to be replaced in a couple of weeks. Replacement valve is made from cow intestines.
Got offered the mechanical valve but didn't want to be totally reliant on blood thinners for rest of my life.
Likely going to spend a lot of quality time on Imgur while my sternum knits back together.
GF says minotaur is accurate since I stalk her down the hallway before devouring her.

Special thank you to the cow where the tissue came from. I hope your life was as healthy as you are going to make my life.

It's made of bovine pericardium. The pericardium is the sack the heart sits in, they take it out of a cow,and chemically treat it and use the sheets to make the valve leaflets.

Congrats on the upcoming surgery. That was a beautiful sentiment to the cow.

Shou Tucker would like to know your location

@op Do us a favor, when it’s over, let us know you’re ok. We would worry about you otherwise. Take care.

Will do. Surgery on the 29th. Thank you

Good luck! Not implying that the same will happen to you, but my mom got her mitral valve changed twice with one made out of pigs (the valve itself or made from a pig, not sure), but she finally had it replace a third time with a mechanical one. Fun fact: theres 10% chance that the mechanical one can be heard from people around you. Long story short, my mom is now officially a clock :) lol! Again, good luck with the operation!

I went with a metal one and blood thinners aren’t so bad

So, you got 15 years from a mitral valve repair. and 15 years of hard use, you say. that might be good news for me. i had a mitral valve repair last year. the didn't go in through the sternum, though. they cut in just under my right nipple, delaminated the surface tissue from the ribs and worked through the ribs after they pried them apart. but no bones broken or cut. was up and driving in a couple of weeks

Mitral valve sounds like something you'd equip in a RPG game to unlock the ability to use magic.

My grandfather got a pig valve. Made jokes for the rest of his life about how he didn't feel right eating bacon anymore. Good luck with the surgery!

Have them place an electronic monitoring device on the valve. Then you can be a cyborg Minotaur. Oh yeah. And the monitoring device is to ensure the monitoring device and the Minotaur valve don't collaborate and mutate. Which would make you a cyborg, Minotaur, Mutant. Which seems pretty cool. So, good luck with that.!!! (In all truthfulness, good luck).

I think you mean an electric minotauring device.

I had this last year (as well as the Aortic). I went mechanical and now I tick like a watch

My dad also had this done. Now he can really Moooooooove.

Hey used cadaver tendons when they repaired my knee, so I’m part zombie.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Cadaver gum tissue! The alternative is they cut a chunk from the roof of your mouth. Didn't have to think about that one

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have an uncle who got cadaver corneal replacements, and spent way too many years after constantly making the same "I see dead people" joke.

I have mitral valve prolapse and I've been waiting a year for anything to happen in regards to it. They mentioned that the surgery would be non invasive, did they lie to me or is it dependent on something else?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Likely they can go in through your femoral artery to fix things. I have to have my chest cracked for this one since there are some additional issues to be addressed (ablation because of arrhythmia that couldn't be done during an angiogram/ablation procedure

My spine is reinforced with titanium along my entire back, and my friends say I'm a Cyborg Mk 1. We could join forces and be the weirdest superheroes ever.

I want a titanium back

It was the single most painful experience of my life, but I ended up like 4 inches taller, so you know, worth it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But do u ever get back pain anymore?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not to the degree I did pre-surgery. I had a pinched nerve last month, and if I do a lot of strenuous labor I'll ache, but that's just like, a normal amount of pain, and passes quickly enough. I'm 41 and I'm stronger than I was at 21.

Hell yeah!

My grandmother had one from a pig for many years!

I thought I was getting a pig valve. I had planned for a whole different set of superpowers until they said I was getting cow. Have to redesign my superhero costume now

I have a pig valve for my aorta. They say it should last 12 years. 6 years in so far. Good on you to last 15 years. They told me when I get my tune up, they will be able to go thru the groin without cracking the chest this time. Not an option for mitral valve? Same on decision to forego the mechanical valve. Also don't want the clicking. There was a gentleman on here who had one that was so loud, recorded the audio from his phone away from his chest. It was awful.

The mighty power of bacon!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So, if this makes you part cow/bull. Then would eating beef be a form of cannibalism?

Also begs the question "can my GF be prosecuted for beastiality"?

Lol. Reminds me of an old sci-fi short story

Please, I'm begging you, don't refer to the '90s as old. I can't take it.

The late 1900s?

Terry Bisson if memory and ignoring auto-correct serves. Though appropriately it corrected it to Bison.

For you, it was a great new short story. For him, it was a Tuesday.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Becusee ops new valve is made of cow parts.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

DaVinci robot an option? Don't have to crack the sternum (couple small incisions) and discharged in a couple days or sooner!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not for this one. I asked

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hope you have a good quick recovery!
