As the meme says, we've been together for about 9,5 years. There have been ups and downs, and given that we had a rather messy start, I think we did amazing.
However, between her anxiety and shitty past relationships, and my anxiety and shitty past relationships, it was sometimes hard to keep the romance up and running.
So when I adressed the subject a few months ago, she thought about it for a couple of weeks, and decided she'd rather not work on it anymore. To be fair, my insecurities have made it hard for her at times, and it has definitely put a damper on things. We agree that we did the best we could with what we had, but sometimes that just isn't enough.
Understandable and nothing to be angry or bitter about. Still sucks.
While we've decided that some distance is good right now, we still think of each other as friends and care a lot about each other, so at least that's something.
For the last few years it has been my main project to get her through school and try to build her confidence. And seeing her graduate and feel more selfworth has been amazing, Just sucks that I won't be there anymore to enjoy it.
But, I now get a lot more free time, which is nice. I'm spending more time with friends, and I can get back into some of my old hobbies again. I've even looked into adopting a dog, and hope to get that sorted in the next couple of months. I also have my own place, so I've got that going for me.
However, I'm no spring buck anymore. At this point I don't know if I should just give up dating altogether, work on myself for a bit and then try, or just dive in. I've been out of it for the better part of 10 years so I really have no idea how this works anymore. Like the penguin says, I'm 47 now, and I don't know if it's even possible to find a new life partner at this age. Any advice you can give is appreciated.
Just to be clear, neither of us consider the years we've had together as a loss. We've learned so much from each other, had so many wonderful experiences, and I've gotten to be (and still am) the stepdad of a wonderful little girl who is now 16 and not so little anymore. She was, and is, the star in my sky, and we're still going to keep doing stuff together on the regular.
It has absolutely been worth it, even though it ended.
But there is definitely a solid amount of grief there. I miss the movie nights on the couch, the trips we've had together, and just the everyday conversations.
It's hard to sleep at night, and when I do sleep it's only for few hours at the time. I try to keep busy, but my routine has been based around her and and the kid for so long, I'm not even sure how to do that anymore.
So while I agree that this is probably for the best, it still hurts really bad and probably will for a while.
Props to you if you've read this far. Not really sure what I'm looking for here, but I just felt like getting it out there.
FP Edit: Totally forgot to do an FP Edit. I won't ask for anything as I've already gotten so much love and encouragement from you guys. A couple of you even PM'd me and we've been chatting about relationships and anxiety and other stuff for the last couple of days. Thank you! I was uncertain about posting this, but it turned out way better than I could have hoped.

Be out and about, be involved in local groups while pursuing your own hobbies and interest. If you meet someone you do, but not the goal
BrokenAnimal
Sound advice. I'll try just socializing for a bit, and if it happens, it happens. If not, I still had a good time.
evildadunit
I just foster partners until they find forever homes
astrangehop
Am I PROUD knowing that 6 former partners modeled expectations on me being a good partner & are happily married now? Absolutely I am. ❤️
NotTinyPancakes
Yeah gotta train them on the leash and toilet train em before they can find homes
nomadmali
35 but same time frame and looking like same end result if you figure something out let me know
MyBallsAreAsSmoothAsEggs
Let it bleed for a while. Then let it heal, my man. You got this.

I was confused as well....
RetrogradeLlama
47 isn't old. It's the new 35. Head back out there.
Nobanob
I just hit 35 so this is like crazy motivational.
TheSlurmFactory
As long as you take care of yourself (which OP seems to be doing)
BrokenAnimal
Thanks for the confidence boost!

I'm a 39 yo single gal and I'm seeing a lot of hot 50 year olds on dating apps. You might make someone's day
Paradox1111
I get more 20s in my 40s then i did in my 20s... enjoy yourself!
wewillwewillbopyou
You got this but also as someone who did take a break and then found my person after I can definitely recommend the work on self break. 1
wewillwewillbopyou
Without it when my person did come into my life I don’t think I would have been able to have the healthy relationship we have now and it
wewillwewillbopyou
Wouldn’t have lasted. I just wasn’t ready in myself
BrokenAnimal
Sound advice. Thanks!
ShiftyToaster
My dad is in his early fifties and met a very lovely woman who he is marrying soon. You're never "too old" to find love. :)
ShiftyToaster
If anything it might be easier. Maybe more emotional maturity to go around than in your 20s/30s. Either way I wish you luck :)
jkwgn
Same but not friends. 51 now, great gf, new hobbies like diving. Don't drink on it. Good Luck!
BrokenAnimal
Good advice there. I've kept drinking to a minimum. Thanks!
jkwgn
I've honestly never felt better. I started out just working on myself, and the rest just kinda worked itself out.
fandsor
I'd say work on yourself. Embrace being single and learn to enjoy yourself. You'll be a better partner in the future when you try again.
ThisIsSteel
My dad met his current wife around your age, there's always someone out there. Best of luck <3
BrokenAnimal
Thanks mate! That gives me hope.

You were a foster boyfriend, I hope she finds her forever home, but you deserve an equal.
blahdeeblahnonamesleft
I'm 29 and am 10 years into my relationship. Gearing up to try and do this but scared shitless.
squelcheswetly
I’m going through something very similar right now. I’m 45. We’re circling the drain.
BrokenAnimal
If you read the comments here, apparently we're not. There is love out there. But it's better to be alone than to be with the wrong person.
squelcheswetly
I meant my relationship is circling the drain. I have no concerns about eventually meeting someone again. :)
Seyleigh
My mom is 63 and has yet to run out of people to relationship with or date. You have time on your side my dude
BrokenAnimal
Thanks! That gives things some perspective. I -have- time!
LittleDragon
So.... you're single ?
BrokenAnimal
Indeed I am! I'm not in terrible shape AND I have a steady job! So there! ^_^
AKrustyTubeSock
But did you date for 9 then 5 years? Or 9 and half years?
BrokenAnimal
9 and a half years.
TotallyNotTheNSAGuys
Damn, got me beat!
MetaSomma
Hey man, just be aware that being such close friends with your long-term partner can feel threatening to future partners. Bring that up as
MetaSomma
early as you feel it appropriate. Probably during/after a first date. You'll both spare each other the time and be back on to other people.
MetaSomma
But definitely start getting yourself out there if you're comfortable with it. The app stuff actually does work.
SirShmoopyofAwesomtown
Do you have good insurance?
BrokenAnimal
I'm Norwegian.

Jesus Christ, did anyone else just notice the ground shake from all those panties hitting the ground?

Yo can I marry you?
BrokenAnimal
That's a little sudden, but feel free to throw your hat in the ring. ^_^

TheSlurmFactory
(almost) Everyone deserves someone who looks at them like this
Thesaya
My dad met his now wife at like 57, they're doing great. If you want to look or not is up to you, but it's definitely not too late.
BrokenAnimal
Glad to hear it! Maybe I still have time to figure this thing out.
coffeeandprozac
If you're breathing, you have time. Invest some time in growing yourself whole first.
whysomuchdoghair
My grandad found someone at 82! 27 years after my grandmother passed. I walked in on them once ?
Iputthebestinbestiality
You certainly do! Be comfy with yourself first though. Going into something new, feeling like a mess isn't good for anyone
masteryoplait
As unpopular as this may sound you’re lucky to be a guy as the range of dating is huge while sadly many great 47 year old women I know end
masteryoplait
up dating someone 20 years their senior bc so few older men want an older woman.
BrokenAnimal
For what it's worth, i would happily date someone of equal or greater age if the chemistry is right.
masteryoplait
Oh I feel the same way if I was single. If that’s how you feel, you’ll do great & meet an exceptional woman. Just take this time to heal &
masteryoplait
work on you so that you can go into it healthy.
Apercu
Before looking for more dating advice here on Imgur, I’d recommend seeking professional help dealing with said insecurities/issues… 1/2
Apercu
Otherwise, history may just repeat itself. You put in all that effort towards her, how about yourself? 2/2
BrokenAnimal
I've been seeing a therapist for about a year now, and it's really helping. Not in time to save the relationship though.
IIbarcodeII
You sound like a nice and responsible dude who has his ego under control. Cheers, random stanger, as time will bring new paths...
BrokenAnimal
Thanks!
sothisishowashitpostfeelslike
I am pretty sure a girlfriend is supposed to be older than 9,5 years.
smilefromaveil
Hey, I was 47 when I met my now 2nd wife. Dated a good amount, was in a long term relationship that didn't work out. You got this
BrokenAnimal
Thanks! Love hearing stories like this. Gives genuine hope.
TheDaharMaster
My ex and me never talk to each other: she can talk to the friend she left our 10 year marriage for.
BrokenAnimal
Fuck that's harsh. I'm so sorry that happened to you.
PrncessVespa
My dad is 60 and just started dating someone. It's never too late and you're never too old.
kittyanya
My breakups hit hard. Dated one guy off and on for 6 years, another for 5. Just nothing clicked. The breakups hurt. Saw my last one Xmas eve
kittyanya
He didn't recognize me because I was bundled up getting carts. I had to go inside and breathe next to my manager to calm down. I miss him ..
MisadventurousFlapJack
Is it possible to address the insecurities or anxiety with therapy? That might be fruitful and help you feel better long term
BrokenAnimal
I've been going to a therapist for about a year now, which has helped a lot. Aside from the breakup I'm in a better place now than... 1/?
BrokenAnimal
...ever before. But it wasn't soon enough to save the relationship it seems. Oh well. Onwards and upwards! 2/2
MisadventurousFlapJack
That's nice to hear it's helped you! I am sorry it wasn't in time for the relationship. Wishing you luck
BrokenAnimal
Thanks!

If I go into 40K, can I hang with Henry Cavill?

I wonder if he does public tournaments

I've been out of the dating world for seven or eight years, but I've been single the entire time. It's been fun for me, but it is lonely 1/3

and pickings are slim in Georgia for a liberal lady. I let my last break up weigh me down, and I think I've missed a lot of really good 2/3

"Props to you if you've read this far" I'm reading your story, like others, to imagine what it would be like. Trying to understand how you
dreikommavierzehn
feel, if it was anything as devastating as it was for me even though my relationships were just a blink of an eye (sometimes even less). I
dreikommavierzehn
try to understand how you keep going, what motivates you and why. How you can remain hopeful. And try to understand "just dive in" since
dreikommavierzehn
I never understood what dating really means or how that would work. As always I'm left puzzled, hardly understanding it compared to my
dreikommavierzehn
own experiences. But compared to others I read and know from therapy, you seem to be doing well. Hope that means something for you
BrokenAnimal
It means a lot to me. Thanks for taking the time. It IS devastating, and I am definitely grieving, which means that heading into... 1/?
