After the third or fourth, the cardinal -written- rule (on the text invites) was YOU are responsible for any damages you cause to yourself or others, and YOU are responsible for the behavior of any +1 you bring along. No wavering on this rule. Believe it or not, it cut down on much of the stupidity (but hardly all of it).

I don’t understand why the tree company doesn’t have insurance paying for the damage. It says it’s a professional company, surely they’re required to carry insurance for that. I assume since the man was a renter the property owner’s insurance only covers the structure, not the renter’s belongings inside, but it would seem like the arborist’s professional insurance should cover anything damaged, including the renter’s property.
They are little assholes that need more consequences for their actions. If you don’t have little consequences along the way, you end up with stupid stuff like this which can have life altering consequences.

It's rally car shit that keeps your turbo spooled. Bunch of hard parkers started tuning their stanced BMW's and Nissans to emulate anti-lag so they could spit fire at stoplights. Some of them take it too far and catch their car on fire. As someone who's owned a lot of stupid, fast, loud cars I think it's hilarious.
And it wouldn't have made the tree fall in the right direction, it might have steered it into the neighbors house. The back cut was too steep, causing the trunk to slide rather than hinge. A straight cut with shims creates a strong hinge so the tree can only go in one direction, provided there isn't too much weight on the house side that it breaks the hinge.
Wouldn't an professional arborist have trimmed down the crown first? Seems like these dumbasses weren't the best at the tree stuff, at least based on the outcome of this video.
If a tree is A) taller than I am (5'2") and B) big enough diameter I can't circle my fingers around it, I'm calling a professional. I would much rather pay a professional and have any repercussions of idiocy be on them and their insurance.

The tree is already leaning towards the house and the bulk of the limbs are on that side, it was going there no matter what 'magic' done below. It needed to be started at the top and whittled down.
Looks like a cottonwood to me. They grow damned fast, but are pretty short-lived as trees go(100-150 years, IIRC), and that one looked tall enough to be nearing that upper span.
Also looked healthy, and like it was providing some damn fine shade. If it wasn't though, they rot fast and the wood isn't very tough, and most of that tree's weight 𝘸𝘢𝘴 facing the house.
Speaking of, shouldn't there have been tension on the line pulling it away from the house even before the first cut?

He was with the utility company and explained. He said it didn't look dire yet, but he was going to make a note to keep an eye on it. I hope I don't lose it. I love my giant-ass trees.
That's good to know. My biggest two or three trees are ash trees and the shade they provide is indispensable in our brutal Tennessee summers. The arborist with the utility company told me that the reason there are so many ash trees on my street is that since it runs parallel to the railroad, they just took the saplings right off the train cars and planted them when the built the houses in the 1930s.
You need to act now. Call an arborist and see if an insecticidal treatment is appropriate, or call someone to cut it down. Tree cutters are not allowed to climb an EAB infected ash past a certain point per their insurer's rules, and that will force you to find hire someone with a crane which makes removal that much more expensive.
When I was a wee lad 20-30 years ago we had scores of ash trees in our yard here in Michigan. We just kept losing them to the damn Ash Borer. Now there are zero left. Damn good tress. I miss them.
A tree that size, leaning towards your house, with thick branches directly over your house, is not great. At best, you'll be cleaning your gutters every couple of months and replacing your roofing more often. At worst, you're inside your house when one of those branches breaks off or lightning/wind takes down the tree.
Better than it falling on the house unexpectedly while it's occupied? Yes, full-stop. Even better if you hire licensed professionals with liability insurance.
It probably would cost thousands to remove it safely, crain, 4-5 person crew, chipper, something to move the big pieces and a dump truck. Still cheaper than the house though
Yes, this would have been also cheaper, but I was comparing it to the damage, and moving the house would have been cheaper than repairing/rebuilding it now after this mishap.

You need to act now. Call an arborist and see if an insecticidal treatment is appropriate, or call someone to cut it down. Tree cutters are not allowed to climb an EAB infected ash past a certain point per their insurer's rules, and that will force you to find hire someone with a crane which makes removal that much more expensive.

When I was a wee lad 20-30 years ago we had scores of ash trees in our yard here in Michigan. We just kept losing them to the damn Ash Borer. Now there are zero left. Damn good tress. I miss them.

A tree that size, leaning towards your house, with thick branches directly over your house, is not great. At best, you'll be cleaning your gutters every couple of months and replacing your roofing more often. At worst, you're inside your house when one of those branches breaks off or lightning/wind takes down the tree.

It probably would cost thousands to remove it safely, crain, 4-5 person crew, chipper, something to move the big pieces and a dump truck. Still cheaper than the house though

Yes, this would have been also cheaper, but I was comparing it to the damage, and moving the house would have been cheaper than repairing/rebuilding it now after this mishap.
