Same exact thing happened to me on my bike. Old dude in a new caddy was looking at the boats in the harbor and nailed me. I smashed in the whole roof with my pelvis and did high speed backflips. When I stopped skidding I rolled to the guardrail and held on so I wouldn’t get run over by the next car. Bike was launched into the river. I didn’t feel anything until the adrenaline wore off but by then I was in the ER with an IV I’d feel good.

I tend to notice when someone is coming up behind me, I'd have definitely downshifted and been ready to move if I'd seen him, that said, dunno where he came from so maybe just wasn't enough time. Even in my car I don't let people who are on their phones stay behind me, not trying to get rear ended

That bag probably save him from a lot more serious injury. It cushions him from going directly into the hood/windshield and is actually what propells him up causing him to flip twice. That is a lot more time to (relatively) slow his body down than slamming and sticking into the hood and windshield alone. Cars have crumple zones but bodies aren't supposed to be the thing that crumples them.

I feel they are. Intention matters. When someone uses the "I identify as" joke, it's usually told nearly word for word the same everywhere you go because people recognize it as that offensive joke, and that's intentionally why it's shared. I don't get any sense of intentional mocking in this joke posted here. It's acknowledging trans people but, crucially, not making fun of them. Hell, as a trans gal who's had bottom surgery, I was going to make a similar joke until I saw one was already posted.

I watched a brand new Ford Puma make a turn at a junction so slowly I thought they had stalled. They were being so careful to avoid the truck waiting at the junction of the road they were turning into by driving so slowly, they still fucked up and clipped the kerb with the back wheel.

You don't see the car much, but can see the biker shift gears (left hand lever) a few times and they seem to be slowing down so I'd assume the car didn't react to the change, if there's a hazard in front the car should be able to see it past the bike, and the red light on the back saying they're braking. And that's not saying anything about how the car may be able to out-brake the bike. Even if they were being a dick and brake-checking, they shouldn't hit

I've known a lot of bad drivers that won't brake based on the brake lights of the vehicle in front of them, but instead wait until their depth perception picks up on the change in speed. Incredibly dangerous, and far too common. These people are people I never allow to drive with me in the car.

There is a documented phenomenon that a lot of drivers (not all, of course, but a serious fraction) see motorcycles but do not register them in their mind as vehicles and behave as if they aren't there. This actually tends to get worse the more experienced a driver is.

I think that's a valid conclusion. I've never ridden a motorcycle, but when I drove stick, I'd be sure to press the pedal enough to activate the brake light when coasting or when stopped. Defensive driving, give everyone else all the information you can about your actions and intentions.

Not on a motorcycle, but I have been rear ended 3 times in the last 6 years. All 3 times I was at a complete stop, either because of traffic of red lights. All 3 times the person was on their phone. 2 of the 3 times was a dodge ram 1500. Both of those times my car was a right off

No. Luckily I was in full size sedans (or saloons, depending on where you live). So, both times the entire trunk (or boot) was completely caved in as well as other damage. If the cost of repairs is greater than the value of the car it's a right off. I always buy used cars because I don't like having payments, so my cars are usually worth around $10,000 when I get them

Yup. I had my eyes on my rear mirrors at all times when i was riding. Constant checks when stopping for this exact reason. Still crashed twice. Once was a buddy of mine who wasnt paying attention during a ride and rear ended me. The other was a 10mph slip on a metal sewer cover on a corner during a rainy night turn.

About 12 years ago I was driving tired after a long day and I pulled out in front of a motorcyclist and his passenger at an intersection, because I somehow didn't see them. Thankfully he was able to dodge me. I pulled to the side of the road and took a few minutes to collect myself... I could've killed two people because I was inattentive, distracted or something. Shame that it took an experience like that for me to change my perspective. So yeah, I wouldn't ride a motorcycle either.

That's what I think happened to me. I looked to the left scanning for a car or a truck in the intersection as I had ten thousand times before, I didn't see one so I made my right turn. For some reason, my brain completely blanked on the motorcycle. At least that's what I think happened, I was never able to fully confirm it as the motorcyclist didn't stop to cuss me out or anything, he just carried on while I was completely unsettled and disappointed with myself.

Unfortunately, it happens a lot when you're riding. You'll deal with it at least once or twice in an hour trip with a good amount of traffic. Though it sounds contradictory, you have to ride while aggressively defensively driving.

Somewhat related: my daughter pointed out to me that anybody can go skydiving. It requires training and preparation to go skydiving *twice*.

My mom had a similar story when she worked in prosthetics. Motorcyclist tore one leg off below the knee, then tore the other off above the knee. Had to learn two new ways of walking, not just one.
