William Kyle Carpenter is the youngest living soldier to ever receive the Medal Of Honour. He received the prestigious award for his outstanding bravery whilst on a tour of Afghanistan. Carpenter shielded his friends from a hand grenade that was thrown onto the rooftop they were based on in November 2010. All men survived thanks to Kyle's actions.

Carpenter was 21 at the time and throwing his body onto a live grenade resulted in him losing most of his teeth, his right eye, he shattered his jaw and broke his arm in a number of places. He says that he cannot remember the blast and as there were no eyewitnesses, doctors confirmed that his injuries were the result of his decision to throw himself on top of the grenade and shield his friends.

While Staci Alonso was serving on the board of a women’s shelter, she discovered that domestic violence victims often had nowhere to go because shelters wouldn’t accept their pets. So, she created a solution. In 2007, Staci opened Noah’s Animal House, located on the grounds of domestic violence shelters. It’s a temporary shelter where animals can stay and receive care while their owners get back on their feet. The group has housed more than 1,500 animals for women who’ve travelled from 21 states to find safety with their beloved pets.

Mark Meyers, 54, has been running the country's largest sanctuary for abused and neglected donkeys, Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, for nearly 20 years internationally with 49 locations, with corporate headquarters in San Angelo.

Meyers and his nonprofit are stubbornly dedicated in giving donkeys a happy life.

"Help us right the wrongs of the global systemic abuse and neglect of these amazing creatures and give back to those who have given us so much," Meyers said on stage Sunday night. "We have the opportunity to save an entire species and with your help I know we will."

Benjamin Keefe Clark didn’t serve as a police officer or firefighter on September 11, 2001. He was working as a chef, prepping meals for those at the Fiduciary Trust Company on the 96th floor offices in the South Tower. When the plane hit the building, he didn’t try to escape the disaster himself. Instead, he took the steps to guide others to safety.[4]Reportedly, the former Marine ensured that everyone in his department as well as in all the 96th floor offices evacuated the building immediately. Following the tragic event, a Fiduciary official credited Benjamin with saving hundreds of lives. For example, once they reached the 78th floor, he reportedly assisted a woman in a wheelchair. Despite his undeniable heroism, he didn’t survive the tragic event.

Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient and Prince look-a-like 1st Lieutenant John Robert Fox was directing artillery fire in the Italian town of Sommocolonia to stall a German advance. While Fox was directing fire, a large German force moved in on his position.Realising that this force was a huge threat to his men, Fox called a final artillery strike—on himself.

When his men eventually retook the position, Fox’s body was found next to approximately 100 dead German troops and a medal was placed neatly on his chest.

When Air Florida Flight 90 smashed into a frozen lake in the middle of a snowstorm, all but six passengers were killed. Some 20 minutes later, a helicopter arrived to rescue the survivors. After getting one man to safety, the helicopter threw a life-ring to Arland Williams… who immediately gave it to the passenger next to him. When the helicopter came back for a third time, he did the same thing again. And again. When the helicopter came back a final time, Arland was dead. He’d used his last ounce of strength to save a complete stranger

Maximilian Kolbe, a friar, was sent to Auschwitz—a fact which by itself almost describes the bleakness of his situation. Being a man of God, however, Kolbe remained resolute against the Nazis. When they decided that they wanted to starve ten men to death in order to prove a point, a lot of people were worried—“a lot of people” referring to everyone except Kolbe. When one of the prisoners chosen for starvation cried out for his family, Kolbe stepped forward and offered to die in his place. He then sang aloud for three weeks to keep up the other men’s spirits, until eventually the Nazis decided to kill him with a lethal injection. The joke was on them in the end, however: Kolbe was eventually canonised as a saint while the Nazis became the fodder for every joke ever made.

Jordan Rice saved a family member during a flood. Unfortunatley, Jordan was thirteen—and he didn’t even know how to swim. When floods struck his family during a car journey in Queensland, Jordan became trapped, along with his younger brother and his mother. Rescuers soon made their way to the trio—and when they tried to rescue Jordan, he selflessly told them to help his younger brother to safety first. Sadly, a wall of water crashed into the car, sweeping away both he and his mother. Jordan’s brother, however, was safe—no doubt thanks to his brother’s self-sacrifice.

When the deranged teenager Seung-Hui Cho started opening fire on random people during the Virginia tech school shooting, Librescu realized that everyone in his class was in danger—and he was having none of it. Holding the door shut, the seventy-six-year-old Romanian managed to stop Cho from forcing his way into the classroom, taking five bullets—including a fatal one to the head—in the process. As a direct result of Librescu’s actions, all but one of his students managed to escape with their lives.

Doing good, when it really counts, is the best form of good.

The idea that people downplay 9/11 as if it wasn’t traumatic to so many families of victims just sickens me.

This is a thing that people do?

Purple Heart glass eye. Love it

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things to save the lives of others. They probably don't think they're heroes but we know better.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank u for this! These r the people truly deserving of the parades and accolades that go to sports figures and celebrities instead.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you read a lot of the Medal of Honor recipient’s stories, a lot of them threw themselves on grenades.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Kyle Carpenter has a pretty interesting Instagram. He is pretty damn funny too.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Jesus-H, dude. I was totally unprepared to read this.

Wow... so much bravery, integrity and selflessness. Tears flowing for all these heroes. May they rest in peace.

I've met Kyle Carpenter in Lejeune, really great guy.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I met him getting my haircut at the same place as him. Told him about how we (I was in USMC too) watched the ceremony, and he was 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

legitimately more interested in hearing my stories than telling his. I felt ridiculous but also realized how nice he was. Very cool guy 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Kyle carpenter is a marine. And one of the most humble people I've ever had the chance to meet.

Sal Giunta's like that too, it's amazing.

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

Is he the one that used his backpack to partially shield the blast?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Check out his twitter chiksdigscars. He’s recovered and he has an amazingly good book about his life and injuries.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Is it sad I hear about a Marine jumping on a grenade and the first thing I think is I wonder how the VA fucked him over?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He entered politics didn't he??

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Question, what's up with his right eye? That doesnt look like a normal false eye, and it doesnt look like a normal destroyed eye. Please say

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hes got a cybernetic eye, lol, thatd be badass, or at least he got a false eye that looks cybernetic lol

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Question about this. Did covering the grenade minimize the blast? I’m curious because if it didn’t kill someone right on top of it, would

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It have killed those around it? Basically how the f do grenades work? And Mr. Carpenter is a selfless hero.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Grenades do not always explode uniformly and the charge could have possibly erupted in one of many directions that could be less than lethal

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also, depending on the age/make/handling of the grenade, it could have exploded in unintended ways.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If there is a weak point in the metal casing, the majority of the force will be directed that way along with *most* of the lethal shrapnel

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How was there no eyewitnesses? Weren't the friends he jumped on a grenade for there?

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Kyle would been screaming "Grenade". You hear that, you run away from that voice. And you don't look back until after the "boom".

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always assumed that everyone else jumps away while the one man jumps on. It doesn't pay to look at close or med.-range explosions either.

Cool guys dont look at explosions

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

No, the apparently muffle them with their own mortal flesh.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

they were probably busy shooting whoever threw the grenade

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

They were presumably looking in different directions, like "at the people who threw the grenade", for example

6 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 0

Or just straight up running away from the live grenade

6 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 2

They were probably running, as one does from an exploding pineapple.

That man will never buy another drink.

6 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

Jesus, I’m neither American nor military and it would be my honour to buy him a drink just on principle. As it would many others, I think.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Hell yeah. I'd buy him drinks and hot sloot if I could afford it

Agreed, I bought him a few in Charleston

I don't see the point of this one. Still a Marine, still an extremely humble dude, still a fucking hero. Prick

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

During 9/11, my friend's mom worked a few floors below where the plane hit. She ran down the fire escape, she saw one of her coworkers stay

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

behind to assist a man in his wheelchair. The elevators were out, so he stayed with him. They were never heard from again. My friend was in

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

school that day. And the school was calling students to the office to notify them that their parents were in the building. My friend nearly

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

collapsed at the news. And because phones were down, my friend's mom couldn't call to them she was ok. To make it worse, she had to walk

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

home. Covered in that dust. Took her many hours to get home. Public transportation grinded to a halt. She arrived in the late hours. My

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

friend, his sister and father hugged her deeply. Tears of joy and relief. I could never imagine what he was going through.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Man something about the Arland Williams story (the helicopter rescue) really choked me up more than the others.

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Can somebody explain to me why a rescue helicopter can only fit a single person in it at a time? Why not just pick them all up?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

At the time (1982) Eagle 1 was a single engine helicopter, thus underpowered to pull people from the water. It was upgraded to a twin in 83.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At one point during the rescues it's skids were submerged. It's operated by US Park Police.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ahh that makes sense. Thanks for clearing it up

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am confused how the guy threw himself on a hand grenade to save his friends yet there were no eyewitnesses

6 years ago | Likes 169 Dislikes 12

No one witnessed his eye. Because it was blown off.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

GRENADE! means cover the fuck up and don't look as shrapnel is a thing. After the explosion its business as usual.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It would still count as an eyewitness account even if they didn't see the moment the grenade went off. Everyone there knew what happened.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It sounds like there was at least one “eye-witness”

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

What I came to the comments for.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Grenade comes in, everyone dives away. But, he dives in... nobody sees it with their face in the dirt.

6 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 0

When a grenade gets tossed at you are you going to watch it go off or turn in the opposite direction?

6 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 2

So the citation says there was one other dude in the position that survived so I think this post is wrong about no witnesses.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Don't question propaganda, son. They're heroic and shit plus "the others" bombed two towers, so invading two or three countries is justified

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 43

great job linking the young patriotic hero tryin to serve his country to his govt that is certainly abusing his sacrifice, but also still 1/

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

keeping us safe. Im sure he would love to hear you say that his changed appearance from a live grenade is "propaganda". 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

The hundreds of billions of Dollars in weapons of destruction are whats keeping everyone Safe. Its absolutely Propaganda to get young men 1/

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To throw their lives away disguised as Patriotism to make many countries a whole Lot of money by creating war out of thin air, to sell 2/

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That has literally nothing to do with his personal actions in a time of immediate crisis.

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I see you're point, but the kid saved lives. No need to bother bringing this up.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

The second part is even more confusing how doctors confirmed this because there were no witnesses. Poorly worded worthless bit of info.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 8

You can gather a lot of information from injuries

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Yes and I stand by the fact that the information about docs and witnesses was poorly worded and worthless.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Cool guys dont look at explosions

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And how it saved them yet he survived? Seems like a dud of a grenade . not like he woulda know so hats of either way

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 31

Grenades kill thru shrapnel not explosive force so being on one and soaking up the shrap would protect anyone around. But where were they?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 8

E-SAPI plates can take a hell of a blow when the arent compromised by rough drops, prior impacts, etc.

6 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

AR500 plates probably saved his life, but probably didn't do much for the spalling.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The military does not use AR500 plates. The only people that use those are people who can't afford proper ballistic plates.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its possible that his squad was engaging the enemy and didn't see the grenade and he responded by throwing himself on the grenade

6 years ago | Likes 114 Dislikes 2

This is just speculation, but this is how I imagined it. Ignore my drawing skills.

6 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yet someone would've had to respond fairly quickly to keep him alive.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

well he probably didn't have enough time to apply chrome and yell WINTESS ME, grenade fuses tend to be pretty short

6 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Glorious comment, not enough people will dive in to see this but well done.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Almost like there would be some audible cue...a loud noise. Even a boom, if you will.

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

So they turn to the sound of a grenade, see a guy on the floor with shrapnel in but can't figure out what happened?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The point is that they didn't witness it directly, not that they couldn't figure it out. Otherwise we wouldn't be reading about it.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
