In 2273 Starfleet decided that in order to save weight (mass) they would not paint USS Enterprise with thermocoat following an extensive 18 month refit of the ship. (TOS reference: Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise)
The more massive the object, the more energy it takes to make it change direction. if you think of how much a gallon of paint weighs, and then the amount needed to paint a starship, you realize how much mass is saved. But, to be a Star Trek pedant, you'd be right in thinking that mass isn't as important when encased in a warp field. You move space, not the object. ;) But the Enterpise also moves at sublight and uses thrusters. Less weight means more efficient sublight propulsion.
Not perfect and based off a Disney™ cruise ship. It claimed that it took about 20,000 gallons of paint to cover it, so with the average weight of a gallon of paint at 11lb, the result would be 110 tons of paint.
I always find it fascinating that in big bridges and ships like this, they just accept that there's a shit ton of rust already on it right from the start. It would drive me crazy if I was involved in building it.
Bridges (at least where I am) are often made with steel that is intended to rust almost immediately, the very thin layer of oxidization forms and encapsulates the steel to protect it from further weathering. I can't remember the trade name right now as it's been months since I had to think about the stuff but the science is pretty interesting.
I know that's how it works with aluminum, it forms a protective patina on the surface. But I always thought iron and steel expands so much when it rusts that it can only flake away and expose more iron to the elements.
Corten will flash rust very quickly, like after a rainstorm or two, but it's a very thin, consistent layer much more like a mill scale than the usual flaking rust you might see in other lower quality steels.
If this is like the pump I painted for offshore use. This is the first of many coats, too. That stuff took 4 coats and had to be done in a very specific way. A way that I could be sued for saying. But 4 gallons of the paint cost us 10k.
Marine coatings require a pretty specific two part mix though, your paint bucket will start smoking and you’d have a hard time spraying before the paint cured.
