It's time to rewrite the athletic gender stereotypes. Women have crushed multiple records of both genders in sports this year.
Mens stereotypes is sucking up all the training, attention, and funding, and acting as if it is natural talent.
Cue the couch potatoes in the comments saying they could beat a woman, yknow, if they really wanted to.
huffnpuff72
I could do it quicker, if I really wanted to.
TicklishOwl
"Mens stereotypes" and yet the FKT on the AT has been very strong female hikers for many years. Not a stereotype in the communities that see women excel for decades, honestly.
Spidey209
Weird flex, but okay. Go Kiwi.
CALAMOSCOPYJANE
Woooooow, she's incredible! Her VO2 max and red blood count must be of the charts.
anononanonanona
fwiw, usually when some major achievement like this happens it's beaten and/or duplicated repeatedly in short order mostly because the person who did the cool thing proved it was possible so people actually try, so yeah, don't be super surprised of some dude comes out and wrecks the record, or another woman, whatever works. It's worth noting that ultra endurance sports have far less of a gap between men/women and often no gap at all, so she might hold it.
TheWombatStrikesAgain
It doesn't say "by foot", so yeah, I could easily beat her by just renting a helicopter.

That Salzburg to Switzerland trip must have been a real pain.

I could absolutely beat a women...if she was also a couch potato.
IlluminaBlade
I know I saw someone here suggest there's evidence that women have a physiological advantage in endurance events that certain groups, of course, don't like to address.
damogen
As I understand, women have the physiological advantage in ultra endurance sports.

Give me numbers. What's the new record vs the old one?
DVSBSTrD
Imaginary.
EMBugReports
Googling: Male was 35days, 21hrs (2024); Female was 38days, 2hrs(2025). Her new record via her instagram was 28 days, 17hrs, 59 mins. From a news article, she said she was sleeping 3-5 hours a night, so that probably saved some time.
nclu
I think this is following a long pattern we've seen where women absolutely crush in ultra-endurance athletics.
hogeyegrex
Crushed it by a week. Oof.

The fact that she's half bird makes this particularly impressive.

I've had a few people try to tell me that Kiwi was a slur and racist. Anyone here from NZ feel that way?
monkeyfly
I'm an Aussie who's been to New Zealand several times and never heard that being called a Kiwi is derogatory. Maybe the times have changed I'd hate to think that someone was thinking I was insulting them. I love that place.
AchyBreakyArthritickyKnees
Kiwi here, def not. It’s just a nickname for New Zealander, no matter Māori, Pakeha, Pacific Islander or whatever your ancestry iis - most of us are mongrels anyway. There are some who try to claim that ‘Pakeha’ is derogatory, but that’s crap (and a helpful way to identify insufferable boors.)

Kiwi.. as the fruit or as the animal?
Cranbananarama
Yes.
EmanNiemThcin
To be perfetly honest with you I wasn't even aware that "speed running the alps" is a thing. Subsequently I also don't know any of the other people who have ever done it and the fact that you say "she beat all the records" but then mention neither the pre-existing records NOR her new one is a bit ridic.
draginator
She beat the previous record by a full week so it wasn't exactly cut throat competition she was up against
MiserCrass
Knowing how apex predators like lions operate, I am perfectly fine with women kicking my ass, as they should. Human patriarchy is toxic af.
OldNternetWizard43
Thank you we need more men explaining this. Especially the kind of men crack dealers would listen to idk who that is though

Patriarchy hurts everyone, women and men included. Feminism helps everyone, women and men included.

Did she follow the same track as the others? Or a longer one? Because if not, she's just Han Soloing it.
hogeyegrex
The Via Alpina, a network of trails in the Alps. She had to divert a bit to avoid a wildfire, which added 5km to her path. In a 2000+km run, pretty much a blip. If you’re running nearly 50 marathons in a month, what’s an extra 5k.
KleptoKea
Hell yeah Sophie Grant! Doing us Kiwis proud! I bet Sir Edmund Hillary, may he rest in peace, would've been smiling ear to ear right now.
Sproutmonster
Who the F is downvoting this? I’m a Kiwi and this comment is fine.
KleptoKea
Hey mate it's just a psycho Nazi here with multiple accounts that I muted years ago and they couldn't handle the jandal. They've been stalking me , mass downvoting and making racist comments about kiwis/Maori. Told me to kill myself as well. Real psycho. See for yourself: /a/0YhklUb

Sorry you have to deal with that. Shame they don’t know that as a Kiwis we have limited Fucks to give, and save them for special occasions.

I've told others here who copped onto this guy that I feel sorry for them in a way. Imagine this being what you choose to do with your life for literally years, smashing refresh on an internet stranger's comment history all day every day just because you can't untwist your knickers over getting muted.

"12% of men think they can take a point off of Serena Williams"
lostlittletimeonthis
I couldn't beat her going up a small hill let alone mountain ranges
BestofUwU
I know cross country and marathon running isn't exactly the same but I just want to point out that at distances longer than 195 miles women have historically outpaced men and have the advantage at "ultra distance" races.
StellarJay77
Spend your entire life fleeing from predatory men and you'd have that same advantage too.
AnotherSamsonow
yeah, this is kind of how people are wired. Remember the survey where they asked if you could beat a given animal in a fist fight? Floor for answers was about 10% even against a tiger, and such. One theory is that, as a group, we just need around 10% sacrificial volunteers.
zanli
Well... maybe if she double-faulted on her service?
Sensiblyinteresting
I could definitely take a point verse Serena Williams if she played 88% of all men first without a break.
BasiliskXVIII
I definitely could...
If we were playing Scrabble. I'm not saying I'd win, but I'd definitely get at least one point.
nyarlathotep777
The only way I’m taking a point off Serena Williams is if it is stuck to her with a piece of scotch tape. And even then, she’d have to let me for me to be able to grab it.
akafluffy
In fairness she double faults about 1 in 20 service, literally anyone can take a point on her by just receiving 20. That's it, while it would be impossible for most to win a rally against her, a match is long enough that 1 point would happen. Tennis just isn't a solveable sport I suspect 88% of men just don't know the rules and terminology to tennis.
dontask
I played tennis in school and I'll never forget the time I played a girl who was about 2 years younger than me who wiped the floor with me. I'm not sure if I even managed to get a single point, despite being bigger and stronger.
Eventually she went on to be the best female player in the country and #11 in singles worldwide while I learned a valuable lesson which I'm still very appreciative of.
theSoulciologist
Imgur is largely liberal american audience. Meaning, center-right on racism, sexism. I say this as a sociologist. The comments over the years of guys saying they could do it better than a woman is fucking wild. Lets boost more women centered content
LabsAreGoobers
Serena Williams herself said she would lose 6-0, 6-0 to professional men. Maybe that’s not the best example to use. Obviously the average man would lose to her 6-0, 6-0, but taking a single point in an entire match isn’t that significant.
jekath
If Serena plays full throttle, as she would against a capable opponent, I think I could take one point in a best of three match. She'd do a single double fault serving 6 games.
If she plays safe, I'd lose every point, no question, if we played 100 sets.
GloveFullaVaseline
I wouldn't count a double fault as "taking" a point though. That's just me.
BarryTheCyborg
If she played it safe, I think I could still win a point. However, it would be because I did something so stupid that she'd be distracted laughing at me.
NeoMonish
I mean, if her double faulting counts as you taking a point off her then so could a head of lettuce. I'd say taking a point off someone means that you at least touched the ball.
kEMup
Winning a point vs unforced error.
jekath
A point is a point. And, to be fair, a head of lettuce has a fair chance of winning against me in tennis. So there.
DVSBSTrD
Maybe one point, but that's all.
theorem604
If you’re a good amateur you might have a decent chance of returning a serve.
crazyspelling
For real, one point, I've seen it happen, because they aren't CALIBRATED for normal people. You hit one shitty shot somewhere no sane professional tennis player would bother covering, and they go "oh shit woah!" And then they recalibrate, and you don't get another.
crazyspelling
To be clear before I get downvoted: this shot I'm describing is almost certainly an ACCIDENT. Like, you barely get your racket on something and it happens to go somewhere totally unexpected, with a weird spin.
bobthefunny
Kind of how an amateur batter might get lucky against a pro pitcher - accidentally swinging "early" into a faster-than-expected ball.
thedudeman519
I hear you .
It's like in fighting games when an experienced tournament player might lose to a noob because he's expecting competent play and not mashing buttons
bobthefunny
I doubt even that.
Magnus Carlsen once played 10 games simultaneously while blindfolded. Against 'decent' chess players - which means better than average joes.
Serena Williams represents the same level of difference in skill compared to regular people. Unless one of those men is actually an international tournament level player - I doubt anyone is scoring a point.
Cid2
You are comparing WINNING a chess match to scoring a POINT in tennis. That is BEYOND ridiculous... I'm pretty sure more than 12% took a pawn (a way closer comparison) from Magnus Carlsen.
bobthefunny
The point I was trying to make was not a direct comparison, but rather that the difference in tiers of skill is considerably higher than most people assume.
AdditionalPylons
Also not a fair comparison. You need to lose pieces to set up a lot of mates, so taking a pawn (depending on the circumstances) isn't necessarily a sign of you playing well, but much more likely playing into Carlsen's hands.
hiiamluciole
I am sorry, I miss vocabulary on that topic (English is my 3rd language) but you realise that 1 point is "a man or she serves 4 times and he wins them all, 5 times and she wins only one or 6 times and she wins only 2". Serena F***g Williams would lose FOUR times out of 4, 5 or 6 exchanges against an average man ?!? No way. No f***g way, not even in a parallel world.
completelyordinary
I did not know this! I suspect that those men did not either. Thanks for the info, I've seen the factoid about men thinking they could take a point more often, but never the context of how you score points in tennis.
hiiamluciole
glad i could help
IrrelevantHandle
I did not realize that, but that's because I know fuck all about tennis.
mikeatike
I feel like its like an intentional joke because tennis scoring is bonkers. Love is involved somehow.
AchyBreakyArthritickyKnees
Nub uh - that’s a game. Points are the love, 15, 30, 40. Win four points and you win a game. Win six games and you win the set. Win however many sets (depending on whether you’re playing 3-set or 5-set) and you win the match. So you just need to get lucky once and you score a point. And against Serena, you would need to be … very … lucky.
Bubble181
Yeah. Given 3 full sets of six games, I think I have about a 50/50 chance of her making at last one double foul on the serve which would get me a point. If she really goes all out on her services, not if she holds back and serves "easy" (which would be impossible for me to return and would be very unlikely for her to flub twice). As long as she's going for her tournament-level serves, I think I have a reasonable shot of her double fouling at least once in 32 serves. Scoring myself? Hah, no.
hiiamluciole
brutal honesty appreciated ^^
Shokwat
I am not who you are replying to, but this makes so much more sense. I thought it was one time of ball bouncing in the area, then not being returned. Maybe that could happen, assuming she trips, and is knocked out, and I manage to not die returning her serve.
bobthefunny
Even under this assumption - you only score on a serve in Tennis. While it's possible that she nets the ball on her serves, giving you a chance to serve - you would have to (a) actually serve a legal ball, and (b) have it be at a speed and location she can't return it... which, considering the speed and power of her usual opponents, seems... unlikely...
AchyBreakyArthritickyKnees
Nope, both server and receiver can score points.
hiiamluciole
you made me laugh at 6 a.m., thank you.
Shokwat
Listen it COULD happen. So I guess I COULD do it. Like statistically it is possible... maybe. The real problem is getting her to agree to let me try 1 to 2 million times.
