I dated a woman from China about 2006. I couldn't talk her into going up to people with Chinese language tattoos and say, "you must really like beef and broccoli."
I feel like if I was into tattoos and decided to get anything in another language like that, it would 100% be some random funny bullshit. Or even just funny sounds, like in the Moonbase Alpha video from so long ago, aeiou.
Two important rules about getting a tattoo: 1. Never get a tattoo in a language you don't understand. 2. Never get a tattoo dedicated to a living person.
I got a big Celtic cross on my back to honor my grandmother. Forgot about it for years until I went to the beach with my family, parents were pissed but my gma said she loved it so all was forgiven. She died the next year but I’ve always got something to remind me of her.
I have casually fantasized about getting a sleeve tattoo of my favorite restaurant orders in their native script, like bibimbap, rogan josh, silky tofu with enoki mushrooms in gravy, katchapuri, pad see ew, injera+tibs, etc. and being able to whip out my arm and point to my order, all while looking like a douchy tourist
When I was younger and still doing martial arts a young guy came in with a fresh tattoo on his chest and went up to our Master Li. Apparently if the characters were side by side they would mean like strength and honor but how he had them spaced out it spelled out stinky fish. Never saw Master Li lose himself in laughter like that. He fell off the chair.
Exactly! Many of these people just have incredibly odd choices for tattoos, but they are accurate. Even sometimes when they miss the mark, it's clear why, like the guy with "Everybody dies, not everybody resides." The artist clearly just looked up "live" as a Chinese verb, got the one meaning "to live somewhere," and didn't know the difference
pro tip: don't get a tattoo of languages you don't know unless you can get someone who DOES know. You can literally find native foreigner people who can translate stuff for you online and then double check its correct.
You ever hear the joke about the cowboy drinking at the bar when a lesbian comes up and asks him about being a cowboy? In that instance it wasn't really used derogatorily. In fact, I might as well get one like his. lol
These videos make me laugh, but... I don't know her any more than these people knew their tattoo artists or Chinese. How do we know what she's saying is accurate? Someone gets that "la la" tattoo and finds out it means goat.
She's a native speaker and her English is excellent. My Chinese isn't amazing, but of those tattoos I do know her translations seem accurate. I would assume the others are, too.
She's a popular Youtuber, seems like chill people, nobody I know has called her Chinese out for being fake (and she regularly reviews tv shows and stuff too).
If I were going to get a tattoo in Chinese, I'd get "pork egg roll" because I like pork egg rolls and it would fuck with people trying to figure out if I got trolled.

The ice cream one i can understand being intentional. Ice cream is great!
Mahcks
□□□□ it means courage.
LutraLazuli
I should go for one that reads Drunk Lake Rat
straha242
Wonder what her reaction would be to seeing a "胡言乱语" tattoo?
Veh1
"Gibber--- I see what you did there."
DWolf
Care to help the rest of us out?
Veh1
It literally means "gibberish".
DWolf
Nice. That occurred to me after I posted.
Subsound
I wanted one that said "Unreliable Delivery Service"

I’m still waiting for the day she comes across a tattoo saying “all employees must wash hands before returning to work”.

A surprising number of them are consistently comprehensible. Peculiar, but comprehensible. Like, I doubt "Queen of Chinatown" was unintentional
Veh1
The "leg" tattooed on a leg from one of her videos is definitely intentional, and "left/right" tattoos on the correct sides on the neck.
CompressedInfo

DesperateDunn365
Or even just use Google translate. Anything has to be better than assuming the tattooist will get it right.
hotaru251
even then google translate can get stuff wrong.
you can go to r/translator and usually find people who can help you translate stuff properly.

5 in Thai is ha so a lot of text chains have 555 instead of lol, both the English number 5 and the Thai character have become fairly common tattoos
ItHappenedInThe20thCentury
thanks, I went looking exactly for that one ;)
oldguyexlurker
"Eat or be eaten" was probably intended. The rest are funny AF.
StormBurnX
I kinda like Vegetable Soup not gonna lie.
Icanhearwhatyouresayingandtheanswerisno
If it actually, literally means “gibberish”, I’ll have it too

Makes me want to get the word for "Gibberish."

Eat or be Eaten is a mighty good Iggy Pop song, as well.

Maybe the computer guide guy works in IT
mikeatike
Was thinking of calling myself this.
Snooj
And maybe that dude likes ice cream.
azazyel
eat or be eaten sound intended and I'd probably get the vegetable soup one, I think that'd be funny.
Veh1
I would get a tattoo of the takeout menu. "This one means the Eight Treasures." They don't need to know it's "eight treasures rice".
BananaForScaIe
In the soviet union?
HandoB4Javert

"Lesbian" was probably on purpose too.

Pretty much a hate crime if it wasn't.

I believe what you wrote, but she isn't the only one doing these. Like I said, good for a laugh...
BananaForScaIe
Yeah I dunno, but been following her for years for some reason hah. And yeah most of her stuff is heavy on satire, enjoy! :D

I'd go with something like "Udon Noodles" or literally pick a tasty dish off of a real Chinese restaurant menu.

Of course it's been done. There is nothing new under the sun.
ButtBot9900
Imagine telling the tattoo guy "No, I genuinely want it to say "egg fried rice" in Chinese.
historymemesandstuff
Apparently a guy got "pork fried rice" on purpose and Chinese restaurants think it's so funny they give him mad pork fried rice for free. Life hack
justfillingthespace
Having a server come over and ask what you want, and you just point at your arm, is such a power move. Love it.
azazyel
"No substitutions" would be funny too
SJBSavageInk
I wouldn't mind one that said meat Popsicle.
mratio
Meat popsicle?
InitHello
I'd go with biangbiang noodles, 𰻝𰻝面, just because it uses one of the most complex symbols in Chinese.
sacrosanctt
I don't even get the Unicode character for that on my phone I guess. It's just boxes
RunningDroid
Fun fact, those boxes are sometimes called tofu:
