I made a homebrew version of gnolls that took this into account (among other things). Hyaenic people wouldn't go agrarian, obviously, but for a non-agrarian society to not be conquered by neighboring agrarian societies, they need to be pretty big and hold a lot of land. So, my gnolls have a society structured more like the Mongols than anyone else, with a strong emphasis on mounted archery and magic disciplines that emphasize healing and survival, for obvious reasons.

Skip the beans? Oh but have meat? I'm poor, I just put beans in and skip the meat most of the time, beans are way cheaper and good protein but also tasty, why would you skip beans. (I'm eating bean chilli right now.)

#14 I was SO pissed when I was in the earth science program and the guest professor started pushing Malthusian theory and individual carbon footprint trash. I was still at the beginning of my education so I didn't know enough to speak up and refute them, but I was proud that my class managed to research the carbon footprint enough to disprove its assertions using its own metrics
skathir
It's just "blame poor people for existing" rather than "blame the rich and powerful for their wastefulness"
Nykidemus
That is certainly part of the issue, but I dont think it explains everything.
skathir
Well I don't know your professor, but in general that is what it's about. Malthusian theory is intimately tied to the idea of society as individuals in competition with each other, the level playing field, the free market, where each is an agent of rational choice & responsibility. In this worldview, individuals bear the blame & responsibility and solution for their own carbon footprint, and for any shortages in the market, rather than looking at the power structures within society as a culture.
Nykidemus
That's interesting, I've never seen it couched that way. It feels obvious that individuals will do what is best/most pleasant for them, and that that is exactly what gets us into this situation, because "what is most advantageous for me, now" is never what is advantageous for everyone, long term.
skathir
Hmm yes take comfort in the fact you're expressing a specific but popular view on imgur and reddit, a very US based conceptualisation of human nature and society. It's very interesting to trace its philosophical roots.
TheZommie
if someone follows the idea of a "carbon footprint" that a single person would do, a hypothetical person who kills an oil company CEO would have a lower carbon footprint than 1000 vegan bicyclists.
skathir
Yep! This is where the most meaningful change can happen from below, in direct action and in indirect action, pressure on policy changes.
Nykidemus
I dont think I've ever heard an argument indicating that we wont eventually hit carrying capacity. What's the popular take?
LtRooney
All evidence indicates that population doesn't grow the way Malthus anticipated, as nations industrialize, birth rates go down. Current UN projections suggest that the global population will never reach 12 billion. We produce and throw away enough food to accommodate that many people. The issue isn't available resources, it's resource allocation. As usual, the problem is capitalism.
Nykidemus
Thanks, that is more or less what I was looking for. I dont know that I agree entirely, but there is certainly precedent for birth rates declining in the developed world. Here's hoping nothing else bites us in the ass before we stabilize.
aRabidGerbil
Theoretically we could eventually hit carrying capacity, but we're a very long way from that. We already produce more than enough food for everyone alive, we just allocate it horribly.
Nykidemus
It's less our ability to produce food right now that is a concern, and more what producing food at the current levels is doing to our ability to *continue* to produce food at that level. If we're not looking at the things that are quietly failing in the background, like aquifer usage, soil fertility, and blight frequency brought on by massive monocropping, then we'll hit that capacity before the public has realized there's a problem.
aRabidGerbil
We could easily produce enough food for everyone sustainably, we only don't because it's not as profitable and it would mean people would have to change what they eat.
Nykidemus
right it's the "we dont" that is an issue. Something needs to change.
skathir
Big movement to make agriculture more sustainable. It doesn't even drop production! Turns out the microbiota in the soil actually are important for fertility. Turns out you can distribute chemical fertilisers much more sensibly and less wastefully.

Population size * Average consumption = Damage to nature
The "anti-malthusians" are just knee-jerking at anyone who says we're over-populated under this system, which we very much are. Nature is fucking collapsing in real time.

PectorialMuscles
We need to eradicate capitalism and materialism. Having a fridge is possible for everyone, having a fuck off huge house with even 2 fridges, multiple cars, and gargantuan amounts of waste isn't even viable for those who have that NOW. Look at American Halloween and tell me that's good for the environment.
PectorialMuscles
Like Skathir said, it's intellectually dishonest, even malicious, to subscribe to malthusian thinking without some severe critical limitations to the theory. 1% of our population is causing everyone else's misery and scarcity issues. We could be farming and living relatively in balance, but we're not allowed to. We have the technology and practices, and they keep getting better while we stay behind.
skathir
Look at HOW MUCH artificial intelligence tech is using of the earth's resources. Look at the news of what is happening with that. It's disgusting and gobsmacking. Do we need that really? All that? Compared to the putative benefits. No we fucking don't. SO MUCH ENERGY AND DRINKING WATER. The tech giants have just said straight up "we'll geoengineer the planet later (!!!!), for now we have to abandon our climate goals in favour of AI". For fuckin WHAT? Their profits?
skathir
I'm no luddite, I have a comp sci degree, I am DEEPLY critical of how this is going. It's so concerning.
Nykidemus
I dont know that all consumption is damaging, but there is very much a point at which it starts to cause problems. I have a hard time believing that anyone reasonable thinks that we are not already hitting that point, let alone that we'll *never* hit that point.
[deleted]
[deleted]
Nykidemus
That's what I was getting at. As long as we're consuming sustainably it's not a problem, but are we consuming unsustainably? It sure seems that way from where I'm sitting. Oil is going to run out soon if nothing else.
spaceminions
As an illustration, when Europeans took north America, they used the resources in a way that allowed for more population but only if that population adopted the new lifestyle. The old one was renewable and stable for thousands of years but wasn't competitive and was pushed aside. Industrial production of fertilizer from fossil fuels (using haber Bosch) as well as fossil fuels in general have exploded our population capacity again. BUT only for as long as we keep the fossil fueled lifestyle. 1/
spaceminions
Now we need to get all that same stuff done without the fuel, and we've been accustomed to infinite growth besides including in population. The population density we have in cities only works because they buy the resources of a much larger area. That larger area is made to depend on the city for money and the things produced in the city. Things produced can be e.g. a shirt that uses a farmer's cotton but required a bunch of expensive machines the farmer can't afford to buy, plus skilled labor 2/
skathir
Well of course if you give a HUGE slice of the consumption pie to wasteful and damaging systems and did I mention WASTEFUL, driven by particular economic incentives that only benefit the wealthy few, then of course you could argue "overpopulation", but only on an intellectually dishonest technicality. It's a bit like building more roads instead of public transport and then wondering why the roads are still completely congested no matter how many roads you build. Except worse and more unequal.
skathir
There's so much house hoarding by the wealthy in my country but their media interests have seized on the "too many migrants are the reason you can't find an affordable rental". There's currently zero economic incentive for housing to become more accessible and useable, but oh no let's talk about "not enough affordable housing" as if the problem is too many other poor people rather than too many disgustingly wealthy and wasteful people incentivised to create and hoard resources.
skathir
*not create resources, just hoard
