Why else would you join the military in 2019?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If he wants to why not? Rock on dude

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

people in the comments need to lighten up...

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

He ate the most crayons.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Better yet how'd they find out? My first morning of basic I was called retarded.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Should have caught it at preliminary screening

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah. If it was significant, it should have been caught at MEPS

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

?1

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Google "Project 100,000" if you want to get really mad and/or depressed

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You think this is either bad or strange or wrong in many ways ? When I was in the Marines, illiteracy was borderline rampant !

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s a spectrum.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

And EVERYONE is on it.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Autism is a hella broad spectrum though...

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

@forrest Gump

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No wonder, they have a couple of dead guys guarding the ammo.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Easy, recruiting is the hardest job in the military. Coaching recruits through MEPS till they sign, then it's no longer your problem

7 years ago | Likes 130 Dislikes 6

Autism doesn't mean they are worse at the job, just different. Use that right and you can build a more effective team.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But at least no bone spur.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Agreed. Still better than our present POTUS...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why is this an issue? If he’s high functioning he’s likely perfectly capable of performing his role. Autism is a spectrum, not a disability

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Not surprising, while we were in Iraq, army recruiting sent my platoon a scout who was night blind ..... sent him back

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah no one look into how many unfit soldiers were recruited during the Vietnam war. Many died

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Someone linked a good book about it here a few month ago, they drafted 100.000 mentaly retarded and they had a very high deathcount.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We had a guy that was practically non-verbal at basic. He was separated within the first two weeks.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also collected everybody's socks from the laundry machines too. He was more than a bit strange.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lol. As an aside, due to the general chaos of barracks life in basic, I ended up with other dude’s socks. And also someone else’s glasses..

They should have been suspicious when he actually knew all the names of the colors of the crayons.

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I served with at least three guys who were diagnosed with high functioning autism and had a staff sergeant with tourettes.

7 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

And all of them were highly capable and just as good at their jobs as any other marine there.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

He probably just swears a lot.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How bad was his tourettes? I know there are a bunch of different symptoms. I wonder if they took his disability in account during inspection

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He had an eye twitch and he would make squeaking noises

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think autism should be considered a problem in the military -- he can hear, he can speak (provided that he received therapy for it).

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which is quite simply, a lot more than you can expect out of a Deaf recruit. This is stupid.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Happens More than people know. During my time I met a few. They did exactly what they were told, just bad social skills. Aspergers probably

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well.... I once caught a sailor pouring jet fuel down the bathroom drain once..... and had a roommate who never showerd

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

His idea for cleaning for room inspection is just throw a blanket over his crumpled blankets..my instructor did the inspiration but I passed

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is my crayon, there are many like it, and I will eat those too!

7 years ago | Likes 335 Dislikes 18

Yeah?!? What's your point?!?

Marines eat crayons and the army plays in the byproduct. Semper Fidelis brothers

Hab a stronk send a bondulance.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whoops. I was doing a wetland delineation and butt linked/texted?? Oh well haha.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I literally had this same damn scenario played out in basic training between a DS and I...I am not even kidding.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As someone with autism, I believe movie Gump was very clearly autistic not classically "cognitively impaired".

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

I wonder what your take on the book/audiobook.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I haven't read it. I just know that it's even less realistic if one could imagine.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He becomes an astronaut, a chess champ, their capsule mistakenly lands in New Guinea and he plays chess with the cannibal chief.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dont forget a wrestling champ and actor

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I knew it.

7 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

My favorite line from that movie. "What is your purpose in this army?!" "To do whatever you tell me Drill Sargeant!"

7 years ago | Likes 212 Dislikes 0

Outstanding!

7 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 0

As a Marine, I can confirm that's how you get through Phase 1 of Boot Camp. The longer you resist, the harder you break.

7 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

I liked how my old high school 'friends' were like "I'd fight a drill sgt if he yelled at me!"

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

My DS was not amused when I uttered those same words at Benning.

7 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

What was he/she hoping for?

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I think he was secretly amused but since we were in formation, he has to keep up his image.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In what way were they unamused?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Probably recognized he was quoting this movie

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We were in red phase and I was too dumb to keep myself bland and uninteresting.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Wouldn’t the military be perfect for someone with mild autism?

7 years ago | Likes 747 Dislikes 18

The military is perfect for no one. War only benefits the pockets of those on the top rung of the social pyramid.

7 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 2

Yeah they make great killing machines if you ask me

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Someone who has difficulty dealing with rapid change in a combat environment?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah until you have a beau boughdahl incident

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm on spectrum and I got a bronze star.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I knew some amaizing Marines that were later found out to be autistic. I might even be mildly autistic myself.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They allow you to join based on your rating and Based on your scores.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As long as they never have to deal with stress, intense stimuli, or dramatic changes to their routine, sure.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

If you know Joe, he's a scammer. People who don't recognize sarcasm, innuendo, or old fashioned bs will loose their lunch money.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Social phobia and other anxiety disorders are very common among the autistic. Some could handle it, but most probably couldn't.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cured

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had a Soldier with Asbergers. He never told the doctors when he enlisted. He was great at his job though as long as you left him alone.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We used to deliberately hire people with autism at the garage I worked at to pull apart cars and put them back together. Immaculate work

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure people with aspergers are allowed, but aspergers doesn't technically exist anymore, classified as autism now. Thanks DSM-V

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

I wondered about that: millions of mildly aloof programmer types became “autistic” overnight. Not sure who benefited from that.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Probably anti-vaxxers. Now they have a much larger base as “proof”.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes and no. They follow orders well and execute flawlessly. But they have difficulty with rapid changes and high stress.

7 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

I can say for a fact I'm happy to know better, I live in a marine town, and the recruiters would ALWAYS try to get me, usually I told them -

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"I need my medication" and they'd leave me alone. I didn't actually need it but yeah. Then I befriended a recruiter and after being with him

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

for a bit he said to me "yeah man don't ever join the military, you're great at what you do but your character wouldn't work with them,"

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mild doesn't mean easier to live with - A lot of higher functioning people are bothered greatly due to the fact they are aware of (1/2)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Things being wrong and also knowing there isn't much they can do about it. Source: On the spectrum (2/2)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends. A fair percentage of people on the spectrum can't deal when something in their routine changes. Good for training, not so good in a

7 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 1

nah, its pretty good still. because now they're dead set on fixing or destroying whatever fucked their routine so they can get back to it.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

"Problem's dead." could be an answer then?

combat zone.

7 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

Yeah I wouldn't be able to tolerate that and the constant close proximity to other humans.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Probably higher risk of PTSD. I making that up but it sounds like it's right.
