I saw you almost drop those glasses. You can't hide it. That's what happens when you pronounce "Imgur" wrong.
Gorgrim
But you did show us Mercy, so I'm confused... or is that a threat to be the only time you'll cosplay as Mercy?
syntaxxor
You pronounced it correctly, which I'm thankful for.

No tags that I could mute so I don't see this and no way to mute the user for some reason, lovely.
rabensaga
That's because it's imgurs company account. No escaping their "awareness campaigns".
getyourfruitoffmeyoudamndirtygrapes
The celebrity of cosplayers means nothing to me, but I hope they raise money for a good cause.
vegivamp
Hey @imgur, how do I mute your weak attempts at growing the community you spent years destroying with your own two hands?
Dstar99a
I'm not a fan of the forced ads either. I use an ad block because i don't want to be advertised to. Now you go through the effore to add your "promoted posts" (aka ADS) to the feed as well. They either need to let us opt our or they're going to keep driving users away. This is not the way imgur team.

"imm gur" If they wanted us to pronounce the A, they shoulda put an A in there. I said what I said.
Raikupath
In the end, rules in language are ever changing and the thing that sets the rule is the amount of people. If a majority says imgur as it's supposed to be said, without an A because we don't care that it was supposed to be imageur whatever. Same with the dude who invented gif. That fucker is a coder, not a "I decide how language is being used" guy. Most people say gif with a hard g. That's what it fucking is. That's how language works.

Okay, every time I go to the site, when I scroll forwards from the first pic I click on, I get this. Again and again. I've downvoted it (which means nothing), and I get it again and again. This is not the way. Please do better.

Already tired of seeing this advert for the first 10 times, now it's really starting to get annoying.

How the hell does a 16 days old post by your PR account show up in my most viral stream today, of all things?
Alsoashley
Was so much fun to team up again this year! Thanks to all who have and continue to support the cause! ❤️ Also you all made the goal… so I did show you more Mercy this week 😄
Doomicorn
It is always a pleasure to have you on the team! This is your best Extra Life video by far. Every year you up the ante!
Alsoashley
That being said, every bit helps and the overall goal of 50k is still on the horizon with your help!
IxnayOnTheOttenRay
Cute but that pronunciation...
TheWhiteBarry
Congrats on figuring out how to get us to watch ads 😂
Grimmrog
Fp is full of ads nowdays, and one of the reasons i am less and less on this page.
algavinn
This is the first ad I've ever watched through I tihnk. Maybe second. Caught me.
FlatPlutoSociety
Imgur is really blazing a new trail in advertising here. Putting a hot chick in an ad to get people to watch it? What will they think of next!?
INeedMoreGifMeMoreJustOneMore
Hey, Imgur, could you kindly NOT force your "announcements" into the stream? Be a good boy/girl and just let the community vote on your posts. Ashley, love ya, babes, this isn't directed at you.
And hey, Imgur, donate money yourself, don't beg others to do it.
Dstar99a
But if imgur runs the campaign and generates the money for the charity, that means they get to write off the donations as a tax write off even though NONE of it was their money. They're getting the users to donate to charity so they can get the tax break for it. All this and i haven't even had to look into how much of the donation goes to the charity and how much gets charged in facilitating the donations. Say you generate 50k, but there's expenses to take out so 20k might go the the charity.
Dstar99a
If that IS the case and not all 100% of all incoming funds go to the recipient foundation(s) then that also means they're charging us for the ability for them to be able to get the tax break. So best case scenario it's a tax scheme. Worst case scenario it's a tax scheme that is also grifting it's user base.
JustSomeDevGuy
Or its totally and easily verifiable as not true at all, but go on I'll let you cook this conspiracy theory
Doomicorn
False.

Any money donated to extra life does not pass through the hands of Imgur and never has. All donations are made directly to Extra Life. When someone donates, they receive a tax receipt to deduct from their own taxes when they file.
Funds raised are sent to hospitals as "unallocated funds" but they do track what they are used for in their Annual Report on https://childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org/financials/
Totters
Hate to hijack the comment, and intent of the original comment, but can we get a fix for the android app? Not just the login session bug, but also the lagging, and the app just straight up preventing us from scrolling sometimes?
suppafly
"they get to write off the donations as a tax write off even though NONE of it was their money" People always say that about campaigns online and when stores run them and such, but I'm like 95% sure it's not true.
darkoshen
Seriously, Imgur, co-opting a beloved poster to do your work for you is shameful. You're a corporation with plenty of advertiser cash. Put your money where your mouth is, thanks.
MagicAndDuctTape
Yeah how dare they...*check notes*... use well known posters to raise money for kids.
[deleted]
[deleted]
SomeDetroitGuy
That isn't at ALL how corporate taxes work.
Doomicorn
Team Imgur has participated in Extra Life since 2017, and we always will. With that said, any money donated to extra life does not pass through the hands of Imgur and never has. All donations are made directly to Extra Life and if you choose to donate, you will receive a tax receipt to deduct from your own taxes when you file. Helping kids is our only goal and we think Extra Life is cause worth supporting.
DerpyBestPrincess
Sure they are. And Trump is a great employer that always paid his workers. Uhuh.
interesseret
Imagine being this willfully ignorant, when a simple Google search can tell you everything about extra life.
SilverHornet
Thankyou for clarifying, it would be worth leading the posts with that to be honest, there are far too many questionable charities out there that mostly exist to keep themselves existing, rather than directly helping. It -looks- like Extra Life seem legit, but not enough secondary information to be completely certain
MagicAndDuctTape
Yeah how dare they be incentivised to... *double check notes*... raise money for kids
[deleted]

MartynMage
We are explicitly asking people to donate directly.
SomeDetroitGuy
Folks like you spreading lies hurts charities. Just keep quiet and stop discouraging people from helping out kids.
RevN3Adventures
Is it actually supposed to be pronounced Image-Ur? I've been saying Im-GRRR all these years.
Etrigan77
Honestly why would it be pronounced any other way.. it is a site with loads of images... why on earth would it be imGERRRR?? That would be ignoring the image based nature of the site.
ThisGuyPostingThings
eyem-joor, right?
georgedragonslayer
Im-joor. But that's my opinion. I have also heard Imgrrr. Image-U're.. and TheShip. Well, that last one is a bit of a stretch.
bigk001
LOL it is im-grrr
chainmaille
They claim it's imager, but it's missing the A, so really it's im-ger (like injure)
NotTinyPancakes
mm gurr to the tune of mmbop
swatz
Same, i say everyone is crazy! actully i usually say M-grrr but *shrug* I'm willing to jump on your band wagon but not this other stuff. :D
FreeTheTiddy
I mean... it makes total sense, though. It's like printer. Print-er. Image. Image-er. Imgur. "img" is short for image, also is a code tag: [img]. It never made sense to pronounce it any other way, imo.
OriginalSyn
I thought it was pretty intuitive as a web developer but even my technical minded friend that does back end development had it wrong but unlike most of the heathens here when I said "Did you mean image-r?" he was like "oh, yea that makes much more sense"
brandsilven
For anyone who has ever worked with HTML or anything like it to insert images in a website without an editor has had to use the IMG tag, which stands for image. So, for some of us, "image-er" pronunciation has always made sense.
VaxxedCanadian
Same g sound as in gif

Em-Gur for me. You want me to pronounce vowels, you put vowels in your word. I refuse to hallucinate them up for your marketing.
fnordy
I do the former because it's (as far as I know) accurate but say the second because it amuses me to do so.
gearsmith
There is correct, and then there is correct.
ThePastmaster
Doesn't really matter.
0570
don't worry, they also pronounce 'gif' as 'jif'. They're special that way.
PragmaticPrimate
It's apparently pronounced like immature
LittleBuddyBeni
I mean gif is technically pronounced jif but we all know they're wrong. just like now when they say it's image-er not im-gurr.
Brianetta
It's not a recent thing. It was in their help pages when I created my account like a decade ago.
LittleBuddyBeni
i am aware. they're still wrong.
AlexSomething
In my native language, "gu" is always pronounced with a hard g, so it's been Im-gur in my head for the longest time. Even after I learned it's supposed to be pronounced 'imager' I can't call it that way.
Same way with gif, which I can't not pronounce 'jif' because again, in my language, "gi" is always pronounced "ji".
It could be worse: https://translate.google.com/?hl=en&tab=wT&sl=nl&tl=en&text=gif&op=translate
ActuallyAPirate
no you were right. its kinda like Gif, or the rules of uno. the creators were WRONG
goodguyC
We used to have this debate all the time. I called it Im-grrr too for a long time, but it is definitely Image-er.

Yes, but the derivative is Image-er. A place for images. It really should have been spelled differently.
LadyNetrex
ImgUR is the best way (like Icelanding pronunciation)
Ventorath
It's like gif. There's a way the creators intend. But that intention is fucking idiotic so there's a divide.
reichstein
It's imgur, she's just saying it wrong.
If it was supposed to be pronounced the way she says it, it would be spelt very differently.
If the original creators wanted it pronounced that way, then they shouldn't have spelt it Imgur (Imgrr).
IllogicalMarxist
This is absolutely right.
DidItForScience
It's actually pronounced, "I'm Gir."
wraiththefourth
Imma sing the doom song now.
TheManWhoStaresAtTurtles
It does make me wonder how many people do or do not realize that "img" refers to an image file. My brain auto-translated the first time I saw the name and never had a problem with it. "im-GRR" just reads so awkwardly to me, much less saying it out loud.
People can do as they like, I'm just fascinated at how people parse these things.

It's spelled the way the img HTML and BBCODE tag is spelled for images, because the site started primarily as a way to embed images into forums and via the img tag.
IrvingSchwinglepuck
fucking A
tenaka30
I've always pronounced it Image-ur because its an image site, and it makes logical sense that it would be to me.
Back in the day when 3 letter file extensions were commonly used (in the Windows world mostly) actual words were made to use them in conversation. IMG existed and was not pronounced how it was spelt as that sounded stupid. It was automatically pronounce as image.
Do you have anything to backup the claim of the majority pronouncing it "img er"?
[deleted]
[deleted]
tenaka30
I see IMG and pronounce it when speaking as image. I would only ever use i.m.g. when saying "the filename is picture.img"
Where do I get an "a" from? I don't. I don't think about it, it's not a requirement that I think about specific letters when choosing how to pronounce a word. In all my time in IT (90s), no-one ever questioned where a letter came from when speaking a tla/extension as a word.
Is H pronounced Haitch or Aitch? Your logic suggests it should be pronounced like huh.
[deleted]
[deleted]
marsilies
Not a file extension, but HTML code and BBCODE used img as the code for embedding images onto pages/sites/comments, and imgur was started primarily for that purpose.
tenaka30
This is a good example of different experiences. In mine the use of IMG as an extension predates HTML even existing. I am familiar with the img tag of course, and in honesty had never thought about where IMGUR might be pulling their name from originally.
marsilies
It seems like using ".img" as an picture file extension was pretty niche. More often it's used for disk images. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMG_(file_format)#IMG_as_an_image_file_format
marsilies
As for people pronouncing it "im ger", I pronounced it "imager" to my wife and brother-in-law one time, and they both said that they thought it was pronounce "im ger". So based on my sample size of 3, about 2/3 of people pronounce it the wrong way.
tenaka30
Just like the jif/gif discussion I don't think either is wrong, everyone has a preference.
The originator might chime in with how they want it pronounced but if they don't do this from the start they will be fighting a losing battle in most cases.
NB: My stance on this is why I stick with Gif over Jif to be fair.
Agatsu74
I pronounce it like "imager" without the "a": Immjur.
thecollective01
Hard G gang rise up!

personNumberA
people really say out loud .. "im-grr" and think, "Yeah, that's probably right." ?
getthismanabeer
Yeah I don't understand either.
ItHappenedInThe20thCentury
honestly, If I hadn't read about the origin of the name I would never in a million years expected it to be pronounced "jur" at the end - what word do you know that has "gu" sound like "ju"?
personNumberA
it's not pronounced "jur". it's "img" = "image" and "ur" like "er..." ..image-errrr
ItHappenedInThe20thCentury
I know that - since I read the instructions - but you only get that if you parse "imgur" as "img+ur", which is counterintuitive to say the least, especially considering one could've gone with an "-er" that would leave no doubt if the "jur" pronounciation was intended.
ChristopherHallett
Flickr, Tumblr, Grindr, why would we think imgur wouldn't be pronounce "im-grr"? If they wanted up to pronounce it "imager" then they should have SPELLED IT THAT WAY.
personNumberA
img = image. it's literally spelled that way.
ThatShiftyMonkey
It's not spelled img, it's spelled imgur.
Adding letters often changes how a word is pronounced.
personNumberA
readingmustbereallydifficultforyou. good luck trying to figure out what that says.

Flicker, Tumbler, Grinder, Imager. Pretty simple.

The official pronunciation is "Image-er" https://help.imgur.com/hc/en-us/articles/26517035789595-Imgur-s-Pronunciation -- but how many people ACTUALLY pronounce it that way... varies quite a lot.

Imagine, if you will, your bank "correcting" your pronunciation of the company you've worked at for 6 years. Thanks for sharing the article link!

I have to correct the pronunciation of my last name all the time. At this point, it's whatever.

This was my bank telling me I'm wrong.
TrustMeImADog
You talk to your bank? Mine would probably just find a way to monetise that.
RaynWisp
Not any more, I got a new bank and stopped pretending this is a "relationship"
majortool
The official pronunciation can fuck off.
reichstein
Damn right.
If they wanted it said that way then they fucked up when deciding how to spell it, and now they have to live with that mistake.
bigk001
like, we don’t need both ‘grey’ & ‘gray’
bigk001
like those fools who say 'aluminium' instead of 'aluminum' LOL WTF... or Brits who call a flashlight a 'torch' ?! it's a flashlight! what do you call an actual torch?? SPEAK ENGLISH, SILLIES!
reichstein
One that Brits do that kinda irks me is calling things by their brand name (or another brand's name). Like calling all Vacuum cleaners "Hoovers", or referring to Cornflakes as "Kellogg's".
LittleBuddyBeni
I mean that's a global phenomenon. it's called genericization and happens when a brand is so strong it's ubiquitous. The US has made brands such as aspirin, post-its, and jacuzzi normal words rather than referring to brands.
flyingmonkeystick
The rest of the world uses "aluminium". It's mostly only americans who have a problem with it.
bigk001
‘aluminium’ is like Hitler: never should have happened & nobody cared until it was too late. well, I care, so there!
bigk001
I'm Canadian.
