I’m curious as to why they aren’t spraying plenty of water around the base of the building to mitigate the sheer amount of dust and the distance it spreads over the neighbouring area. Is it just not a common practice in the US?

It's like spitting in the ocean. That's not sand from around the base of the building, it's concrete and wallboard, pipe insulation, and all sorts of stuff, shattering to dust from the impact. You'd have to put a crew throughout the building, which has also been substantially cut apart to ensure it falls in the intended way, flooding the weakened structure with water from roof to basement, right before demolition. Then you have to quickly get them out before it dries and blow it.

Not sure exactly what the reason was here, but generally it can be that the building is so old that the concrete can not be deemed safe after being hit by the hurricane, or that they found damage on parts that were not deemed safe to repair (Pillars, foundation etc), or just that the damage was so great that the price for fixing it was to close to the buildings value or even higher than the buildings value.
There are more things that it could be but those are some of the more common ones.

Pretty much. It's changed owners a couple times, after a couple big firms stopped renting out office space there they started going downhill hard. No one wanted office space there because it's on the other side of town from the rich people. Other than lake shore dr, but those people don't work. Their money works. My grandfather's stock company use to be in there, saw a lot of people leave the building. It was weird going there for fireworks shows and it be so empty

It really pisses me off how the text "watch the moment when" is being used for every fucking video, even those which show something that takes more than a moment to happen. I know language evolves but it's annoying when words are misused to the point they lose their meaning. Sigh.

I'm guessing that the time and manpower to repair it was just too expensive compared to demo and rebuilding. I've seen brand new skyscrapers go up in like 6 months. But I've seen repairs on an existing fire alarm system take 1-2 months. It's a lot harder to find out what is wrong, and fix just the part that needs fixing, while also making sure that it remains structural and stable and that you don't do more damage than you need to, etc.

Our capital-focused economic model means there's no value in stripping the building of assets for recycling prior to demolition, nor in fixing it up. It's cheaper to rebuild and start from scratch, and they probably have extra insurance or development monies to do so, so ka-ching!

It had severe structural damage to the point that the insurance agency refused to pay out for repairs. It's been in court for years, the state just said fuck it and gave them enough to demolish the thing since there was a risk of it coming down on its own eventually.

Well, the wind for one thing. A nice cold front had just passed through the night before and there was a breeze coming in from the north and swept the dust away pretty quickly. Of course it was right through south of there but it was gone in no time. I'm sure the dust bits were raining down south of there though.
