It's similar to but functionally worse than the "how bad was the stroke" test. The NIHSS tests for damage following the stroke, the MoCA is for charting the rate of decline for dementia or similar advancing cognitive impairments.

I've posted here before that I took one of these tests as a teen. My fine motor skills have always been a bit off, and I was just kind of a weird kid. They told me the same. Passing doesn't mean anything, failing does.

They're actually scored, because we use them to track deterioration. The one he had described sounds like the MOCA which is scored out of 30. Above 25 is considered normal. But getting a 30 is what most people would be able to do. Less than 25 isn't brain mush, most people with a 24 could probably get by fine in day to day life. It's definitely nothing to brag about to "ace" these tests but there is slightly more to them than pass/fail
