Yes, yes, Operation Bagration, the circling of the Army Group Centre and the brilliant tactical moves from Zhukov are all "The winter". Sure
Winter helped a lot breaking the German war machine, but it's still not the T-Rex nor any other dinosaurs on this picture.

And yet still Napoleon was faster in Moscow than the germans. And strangly half of his army was dead when they arrived there before winter.

Really? I watched 3 documentaries that said D-Day was "The Single Most Important Day in Human History." You tell me it's just CoD...
You can make a case for it. If D-day failed, either Hitler or Stalin destroys European civilization. That is pretty bleak.
Well, Stalin sure. Hitler would've lost either way, but the war was always US vs USSR. The bombs were to show off to Stalin. Not Hirohito.
Per the Japanese, the bombs impressed a number of them. They said the bombs and the Soviets between them made them give up. I believe them.
I'm sure the bombs had more of an impact than a fruit fly. But they weren't essential to win the war. We didn't need to nuke them to win.
Oh, and Also Truman was kind of a racist and an asshole. But history has a way of white washing our sins.
We did nuke them to show the Soviets that we meant business, and they weren't going to just take whatever they wanted in negotiations.

Lots of good points here regarding everyone contributing to the victory, but the bigger point is regarding Russian Westward expansion...
The US and her allies were the only thing keeping Russia from marching to English channel, trading one nightmare scenario for another.
Russia had no desire to "free" Europe, but rather dreamed of conquering it for themselves.

America donated literally thousands of trucks and jeeps to the Soviets, giving them a decisive advantage in mechanization over the Nazis.
Sure, the Soviets aren't given anywhere near enough credit as they should, but it's not as though The United States didn't contribute at all

The only two countries with fully motorized artillery at the start of the war were UK and USSR. Even USA had horse-drawn artillery in 1941.
Small core of advanced tanks that were a logistical nightmare to maintain, along with some armored cars and alot of horse-drawn carriages.
Actually the most important stuff US gave USSR was train engines and some vital chemicals.

Yup, probably just as violent as the eastern front. Those japs wouldn't give up.
MedrengardMax
It was close, but the level of brutality was not on par. Leningrad alone was a kind of massacre completely unseen in the Pacific.
ActualAnimal
Does Manchuria and the Rape of Nanking count as the pacific?
Nope, that was the Chinese theater. The Pacific theater was a war on the ocean, whereas the Chinese theater was a land war.

It was war. Brutality was the same. Just the scale of land fighting was far less in the Pacific
There is a very stark difference between island hopping and open siege warfare, the comparison simply doesn't hold up.

Trading mostly with HUGE interest that wasn't paid off until the 80's. Not that it wasn't a huge boon, but it came at an outrageous cost.
It cost an incredible amount to keep the U.K. operating as well as operating our own force. It cost a lot to fund the Russians too while we
also spent an incredible amount defeating the Japanese in the pacific. Your society was about to come to an end. You're welcome.
And USSR paid for all those resources with gold and money for many many year. It wasn't a freebie. Well, some of it was, but not for USSR.
Nor should it have been. We kept the USSR functioning during wartime. We gave them the ability to fight. It wasn't cheap.
It was a great boon. But not the lifeline you make it sound to be.
Slamtastik
We gave the Russians food and trucks, we gave them tanks and planes too but they used them as target practice because they were shit.
Avatar720
The Shermans were alright, but by that point the USSR was producing far more of its own tanks. Lees were death-traps, M3s weren't fantastic.
The Soviets depended far more on equipment like boots than it did on LL tanks.

I agree that the US funding did help Britain, but it was given as a loan (which made the US lots of money), rather than just support.
The "loan" bit was a cover story. Little of it was ever paid back. Isolationists at the time denounced it as a scam. They knew.
It got Britain what it needed while it needed it. It was done on a promise of repaying and that was it. UK fulfilled its obligation and we
trusted them to do so. As for support with no expectation of repayment, which is a stupid expectation, how about US airmen traveling to the
UK to take part in the Battle of Britain. We saved the U.K. What's wrong with repaying the costs incurred to keep the country functioning?
collapsed and the soviet advance would never have happened as the bombing of Germany would have never occurred and the full might of Germany
would have been directed on the eastern front along with the resources they were harvesting from n. Africa (oil). Japan would not have
fallen as their navy would have been fully prepped for war instead of being annihilated. We didn't win it alone but without us, Germany
would have won the war in Europe and at LEAST held the soviets off. Deal with it.

U.S. helped both sides of the war for a while. You can debate how much so for each side, but there it is.
The soviets invaded Poland with Germany. Forgot about that? Or are you blowing things out of proportion?
Did you intend to reply to my comment with that? Or the post? If the former, then I am perplexed. You are correct, though.
Your comment. I didn't downvote you either. Considering we supplied the U.K. with oil and food, without which the U.K. would have become
combat ineffective and would have collapsed, long before we officially joined, I wouldn't say we assisted Germany in any real way.
Don't worry, I didn't downvote. I just didn't quite understand if that was a rebuttal or not, and if it was what was it rebutting.
yahya021
But the US also sold weapons to Germany, or did you forget about that?
ARandomHelljumper
It's often best to forget about lies. What I find more perplexing is the worship of Russia who raped and murdered thousands of Poles.
ChrisNorris
That is a misleading half-truth. Please read up on the topic. Plus, at the time, we didn't have any weapons worth selling.
Oh please. Normal economic trading does NOT equal supplying the German war machine en-mass.
TomNguyen
They didnt back anyone. They didnt enter the war so they can sell weapons and resources to both sides
What?
The USA didnt enter a war before 1941, before that they didnt want to intervene because they was selling resources to both sides of war
Even though Allied has requested US for the military intervene and it could resolve a war quickly.
Rulweylan
The USA charged the UK for the help. We only finished paying off the debt a decade or so ago. You get no points for mercenary work.
...wow. Your nation was done. Your society was coming to an end. We step in and SAVE your asses before we had even joined the war and you
somehow manage to turn that into a negative thing for the U.S.? Up yours. Paying us back was the least you could do. Jesus...
Cjamhampton
No, the UK borrowed money and equipment from her colonies and the US. They never hired the US to fight in the war as "mercenaries."
The US supplied the UK with a lot of money and materials. The US lent a lot to the UK in the lend-lease program and didn't require payback.
The US did get bonuses like bases from the UK but the only requirement in the lend lease program was that the materials be returned after.
The Anglo-American loan you are talking about was a loan of money and materials, not mercenary work.
ExC12
What, do you expect a country of isolationists to simply give you stuff for free in a war we had nothing to do with?
Apparently. This guy's a dick who would try to find the downside of a sunrise.
A lie. The only bit that got paid back was the bit after the war was over. And that was ten cents n the dollar.
This needs more points
Why?
Because it's accurate
We get repaid for keeping a nation afloat during wartime, saving their society, and that makes us mercenaries? Up yours.

It wasn't our war, at first. It was Germans and Brits and French killing each other. Just like they'd been doing for a thousand years.
Russian here, I always wounder if you guys celebrate victory as we do every year? May 9th is the 2nd biggest holiday in Russia after NewYear
ZeGermanGuy
In Germany, we celebrate May 8th as "Day of Liberation", but it only used to be a national holiday in East Germany.
Not as much of a big national parade day thing over here, and we celebrate in August since that was when we finally finished with Japan.

It's compairing the size of the US vs Japan. Besides the Brit-Rex is hunched over.
GuanYuThatsWho
Brit rex is an allosaurus, which are 4 tons. t-rex are 6-10 tons
DarthFutuza
By the time America entered the war, Britain had lost a few tons.
Britain actually had less casualties despite being in the war for a longer period.
The US only shortened the war, Russia already had it won. Even the Japs only surrendered because Russia was 3 weeks away from invading.
I hate displaying accurate information only to get hit with down-votes. The US didn't become a strong till after ww2, get over yourselves.
DoubleOhKevin
Without the US pouring in supplies, bombing Germany, and generally keeping Hitler distracted, the USSR never would have pulled it off.
And without the USSR pouring in millions of troops and battering the eastern front the Allied invasion of Normandy would have failed.
Not really, The supplies we gave USSR Yes, But the USSR was already cleaning up the eastern front by the time the US got there.

It was not. At least, not all the war. Stalin early purge deprived the soviet from many competent general (indeed) but others came after
Zhukov, for instance, was really fucking good at his job, definitely not Brannigan. Underestimating Soviets was also a mistake Hitler made.
Yeah, but the bulk of the losses came from before Zhukov took over, so my point still stands.
your point is irrelevant, The losses came from a crippled military without many officers, thanks to the purges.
You see, killbots have a preset kill limit. Knowing their weakness, I sent wave after wave of my own men...

It's always worth remembering that the UK was vastly larger than the US at the time. The UK was a superpower around the globe.
The US helped in Europe but forgets that the Empire was fighting with them in the Pacific and alone in China against the main Japanese force
That is in all the history books. It was not forgotten.
Who reads books when there are films, games and dinosaur memes? :D
Sigh. Very true.
The British are seen as a sideline in films and games and only in France. We had land on every continent, fought against every enemy
And at one point most of the allies as well. Now the UK would rely on US military might but back then the UK WAS the military might.
RacingToRedLights
Absolutely, US deserves plenty of credit but they were the closer. Brittain, Russia, France pitched first 8 innings USA came in and closed.
That's a pretty good analogy, actually. I don't suppose Canada, ANZAC, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands and company were manning the bases?
Damos692

Canada, being in the British Commonwealth did quite a lot more, along with Australia and NZ. Don't forget India and other UK colonies too.

Nope, they're not interchangeable. But hey, you used "calm down" so that was better than you making a point

People always post this... Canada lost 0.25% of the amount of people China lost and you don't see people asking where's china...
You don't measure success by how many people you lost, bud.
Dark0001
You are comparing a country that was defending itself vs a country that was never at risk of invasion but sent people to die to help allies?
And trying to call that equal? And as far as soldiers, Canada lost 0.37% of it pop vs China's 0.6%. Most of China's were civillian
No. I'm saying it's childish to ask for a pretty little dinosaur on a shitty joke.

China's casualties are so often forgotten, it's ridiculous. But this post is more about "boots on the ground" than civilian casualties
ForTheLoveOfTheLeafs
Yes but how many people did we kill Canadians were pretty danm powerfull in that war. Again Canada has very little money invested (1/3)
in their military but our soldiers are rugged as fuck have you ever met a northern Canadian because they (2/3)

But why, Canada had been a Dominion for close to 100 years by that point.
The Commonwealth
BewareTheIceSpiders
We didnt even write our own constitution at that point.
Ps. fuck the Clergy Endowments Act of 1791. Dont think we forgot that shit.
That was WWI. In WWII Canada joined the war on its own and had command of its own troops
Canada was still a dominion until the 80's, actually.
Statute of Westminster and we did fight in WWII under our own flag (red ensign at the time)
Flag is irrelevant, and Canada Act 1982.
TheBossManNathan
Canada was a major part in WWII. We took care of a large part of Italy and were one of the deciding factors in the Battle of Normandy.
Lol. *pats head* That's right. You're a big boy too.
That's what the Canadians told the americans after Normandy. Look at the comparisons of how much land each party took.

I mean let's be real here a lot of the omitted countries played a larger role than Canada did. I don't understand why you guys have to 1/2

Fuck yes. France was so grateful they gave us a chunk of their land. americans can't say that.

No. The major force. Think of the Soviets numbers and triple that. Canada fought on the northern front.
TheMaestroYohan
For those who missed it: \s
It was a joke. There weren't 3 times as many Canadians as the soviets.
No we mean THE. The US joined very late in the war, and barely had time to help with the invasion of Normandy cause of the Japs.
OtterAvalanche

WWII was won with American steel and Russian blood.
The uk fought the Germans alone for a year without them the war would have been over with a convincing German victory.
Horseymcfaceyface
Yes but without anyone it would of been a German Victory. America mattered the UK mattered and soviet union mattered
I know, it's just most of the comments are saying it was the Soviet union and the us who were the only reason the allies won
sigh...the lend lease was tiny in comparison with the soviet industrial workhorse.
...and Japanese negligence, they could of attacked the Soviets in the east and destroyed their industrial sector; Japan not a team player
what? they tried.. and got absolutely stomped.
seriously where are you getting this from?! The Soviet Union and Imperial Japan didn't got to war till after Germany surrendered.
http://thediplomat.com/2012/08/the-forgotten-soviet-japanese-war-of-1939/
no they didn't, the reason why is that they never trusted the Nazi's; even if they had invaded their military would've been stretched thin
and couldn't count on the Nazi's to share resources after takeing control of middle eastern oilfields, instead they opted to attack the U.S.

A bit inaccurate, considering that the fall of France was more a product of political circumstance than it was a military defeat.

Well, Stalin sure. Hitler would've lost either way, but the war was always US vs USSR. The bombs were to show off to Stalin. Not Hirohito.
MidlandRedux
Per the Japanese, the bombs impressed a number of them. They said the bombs and the Soviets between them made them give up. I believe them.
Cereaza
I'm sure the bombs had more of an impact than a fruit fly. But they weren't essential to win the war. We didn't need to nuke them to win.
Cereaza
Oh, and Also Truman was kind of a racist and an asshole. But history has a way of white washing our sins.
Cereaza

You want them to put little American jeeps under all the velociraptors?

Well yeah. I mean, I'd surrender if I had to fight an army of raptors on Jeeps.

The only two countries with fully motorized artillery at the start of the war were UK and USSR. Even USA had horse-drawn artillery in 1941.

mahtax
I do! Thanks for checking. :)
randyMagnum357
Yup, probably just as violent as the eastern front. Those japs wouldn't give up.
MedrengardMax
It was close, but the level of brutality was not on par. Leningrad alone was a kind of massacre completely unseen in the Pacific.
ActualAnimal
Does Manchuria and the Rape of Nanking count as the pacific?
MedrengardMax
Nope, that was the Chinese theater. The Pacific theater was a war on the ocean, whereas the Chinese theater was a land war.
Elroydb
It was war. Brutality was the same. Just the scale of land fighting was far less in the Pacific
MedrengardMax
There is a very stark difference between island hopping and open siege warfare, the comparison simply doesn't hold up.

Ever hear of the Rape of Nanking? Or any of the Sino-Japanese War? The japs were just as brutal as the Nazi's.

And USSR paid for all those resources with gold and money for many many year. It wasn't a freebie. Well, some of it was, but not for USSR.

Nor should it have been. We kept the USSR functioning during wartime. We gave them the ability to fight. It wasn't cheap.

The "loan" bit was a cover story. Little of it was ever paid back. Isolationists at the time denounced it as a scam. They knew.
Mcknizzle
It got Britain what it needed while it needed it. It was done on a promise of repaying and that was it. UK fulfilled its obligation and we

Your comment. I didn't downvote you either. Considering we supplied the U.K. with oil and food, without which the U.K. would have become

Khaotix11
Don't worry, I didn't downvote. I just didn't quite understand if that was a rebuttal or not, and if it was what was it rebutting.
yahya021
But the US also sold weapons to Germany, or did you forget about that?
ARandomHelljumper
It's often best to forget about lies. What I find more perplexing is the worship of Russia who raped and murdered thousands of Poles.
ChrisNorris
That is a misleading half-truth. Please read up on the topic. Plus, at the time, we didn't have any weapons worth selling.
Mcknizzle
Oh please. Normal economic trading does NOT equal supplying the German war machine en-mass.
TomNguyen
They didnt back anyone. They didnt enter the war so they can sell weapons and resources to both sides

What?
TomNguyen
The USA didnt enter a war before 1941, before that they didnt want to intervene because they was selling resources to both sides of war
TomNguyen
Even though Allied has requested US for the military intervene and it could resolve a war quickly.

Mcknizzle

Cjamhampton
No, the UK borrowed money and equipment from her colonies and the US. They never hired the US to fight in the war as "mercenaries."
Cjamhampton
The US supplied the UK with a lot of money and materials. The US lent a lot to the UK in the lend-lease program and didn't require payback.
Cjamhampton
The US did get bonuses like bases from the UK but the only requirement in the lend lease program was that the materials be returned after.
Cjamhampton
The Anglo-American loan you are talking about was a loan of money and materials, not mercenary work.
ExC12
What, do you expect a country of isolationists to simply give you stuff for free in a war we had nothing to do with?

Without the US pouring in supplies, bombing Germany, and generally keeping Hitler distracted, the USSR never would have pulled it off.
DoubleOhKevin
And without the USSR pouring in millions of troops and battering the eastern front the Allied invasion of Normandy would have failed.

Not really, The supplies we gave USSR Yes, But the USSR was already cleaning up the eastern front by the time the US got there.

It's always worth remembering that the UK was vastly larger than the US at the time. The UK was a superpower around the globe.

The US helped in Europe but forgets that the Empire was fighting with them in the Pacific and alone in China against the main Japanese force

NationalistCanadianMooseWarrior
You don't measure success by how many people you lost, bud.
Dark0001
You are comparing a country that was defending itself vs a country that was never at risk of invasion but sent people to die to help allies?
Dark0001
And trying to call that equal? And as far as soldiers, Canada lost 0.37% of it pop vs China's 0.6%. Most of China's were civillian
SaltCollector
No. I'm saying it's childish to ask for a pretty little dinosaur on a shitty joke.

China's casualties are so often forgotten, it's ridiculous. But this post is more about "boots on the ground" than civilian casualties

Canada was a major part in WWII. We took care of a large part of Italy and were one of the deciding factors in the Battle of Normandy.

That's what the Canadians told the americans after Normandy. Look at the comparisons of how much land each party took.
