And my friend asked about the northern lights when the sky was already too bright to see them, because I live so far up north that the sun doesn't go down properly for very long. Maybe I'll have better luck tonight, gotta run outside as soon as the sky goes dark instead of after midnight. Sky was just blue and the horizon was already very bright at 00.20 when I went outside tonight.

I was tired AF, set an alarm for a 1hr nap - and then proceeded to sleep over 7 hours, and the aurora oval has since moved away from here. (legit if there's a fire, the smoke alarm might not wake me) Sunrise is about to happen, but I might have seen something. It looked like incredibly dim, colorless beams of light coming from the north.

That sounds a bit like it. I've heard the best pictures come from cameras because they can do extended exposures to pick up more of the faint details anyway.

No they don’t disrupt your typical power lines. If the solar storm is causing those kinds of things we’ve got a lot bigger problems on our hands… most notably the lack of magnetic field around the earth.
This means most of us are getting melted by solar radiation though and close to 100% of life on Earth will be eliminated. Kind of like the Permian Extinction.
I also live in Texas and can report… no problems.

Just for reference the UK is a similarly isolated grid with HVDC ties to surrounding synchronous grids (same as Texas). That by itself isn't a problem. Also be wary of someone who speaks nonspecifically with the term "grid" it's an abstraction of 3 layers of the electric network. Someone telling you there's a problem with the grid is going to sell you something that doesn't fix problems.
