Language is fascinating - the town of Booneville in Northern California created its own language, called "Boont." In the run-up to the US Civil War, American English, particularly in the South, became so highly coded that it was close to becoming a separate language. Same words, different meanings and uses. We're seeing this coding separation now. Conservatives often capitalize words in sentences, like "They Hate Everything!" In China, Nüshu is a language specific to women.
A Møøse once bit my sister ... No realli! She was Karving her initials on the møøse with the sharpened end of an interspace tøøthbrush given her by Svenge - her brother-in-law - an Oslo dentist and star of many Norwegian møvies: "The Høt Hands of an Oslo Dentist", "Fillings of Passion", "The Huge Mølars of Horst Nordfink"
Fun fact: while Norwegian was invented as a joke for the opening credits of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, it has evolved so much it is now a proper language spoken in a whole country.
I recall a story from way back where a couple met at some gathering in Europe, a science convention I think, where neither spoke the others language but both spoke Klingon. Fell in love and continued with the Klingon for three or so months. Not sure if its real but I really liked the vibe of the story
Is it just me, or was there something particularly asshole-ish about talking smack about the Federation *while* settling down to to a big ol' meal platter and bottle that their replicator provided you?
As a Dutch speaking Belgian, I hate that ‘Dutch’ is associated with, well, the Dutch. It’s our language too! We could say Flemish or even Flemspeak, Flemsch, Fleman, or Flembourgish, but it ain’t gunna catch on 🙄
As a dutch, when i hear some.one speak norse or swedish or danish im like; hmhmhmhm....wait a minute i dont understand shit! It feels like dutch but it totally isn't. Also... I'm better at english than at dutch grammarwise. It sucks ass
Because while they may have been constructed for fantasy worlds, the authors went through painstaking effort to *invent a full language* and people like it!
I was under the impression that high Valyrian isn't actually fleshed out enough to be a full conlang. I remember when it first hit Duolingo it was kind of controversial.
George certainly didn't put in the work to make it so. I don't know if the producers of the show got anyone to do it. The fact that they don't have Quenya makes me a bit sad.
Pfft look at the last season, the idiots didn't even have a writer's room, and put a real baby on a block of ice, they ain't got the brains to make or hire out someone to make a conlang
One of my favorite lil love stories is how two people met at some convention or something and didn't speak each other's native language, so they spoke to each other in Klingon.
No. Most languages just evolved naturally (and are still evolving), without anyone having designed them. Artificial languages are created as a whole, sometimes from scratch. There is one language that is both, modern-day Hebrew, an old language that was extinct as a spoken and written language (it was only used as a sacred language), but successfully revived around the beginning of the 20th century. It's a very interesting phenomenon: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revival_of_the_Hebrew_language
Every time I see ASL I forget about the communication needs of deaf Americans and my brain goes straight to Age/Sex/Location - fuck me if that isn't a Pavlovian response.
I've read that they've made up enough Klingon that you can actually use it as a functional language. There's even a production of Hamlet entirely in Klingon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Klingon_Hamlet
There's an internet story about two Trekkies meeting at an international convention communicating in Klingon for the first few months of their relationship. They later got married.
I remember a similar issue where somebody had to communicate about a medical issue, but due to language barriers the only language they had in common was ultimately Klingon.
One I read was a guy getting a door-to-door salesman and spoke in Klingon to try to scare him off... only to find he also spoke Klingon and ended up dating and marrying.
That is exactly what Dutch is. To quote my Dutch friend. "Klingon is an actual language someone designed. The others are fake nonsense moonspeak." hahaha
That's only the way the Dutch speak it. Flemish, the variant (dialect, if you want) of Dutch we speak in Belgium, has way less of that "back of the throat", nasally feel/sound to it.

More importantly, why is it the wrong flag for the Netherlands?

Klingon may be an artificial language, but it is a real language. Same with Tolkien's Dwarvish and Elvish.

Right but designed =\= created. Technically all languages are created by humans.
FallenWyvern
Body language isn't. Animals communicate by scent, movement, sound, and in some cases, brilliant visual displays of light.
We know dolphins and whales communicate vocally over vast distances. Humans didn't teach them that.
Although we can take credit for helping cats develop a language they use exclusively with us.
