We'd fish out of a small aluminum boat. Sounds would definitely resonate from that into the water, especially fidgeting noises against the hull. Grandpa's solution when I was young was to tell me I wasn't likely to get a bite until at least 3 dragonflies were perched on my pole. That meant I was still enough I wasn't making noise, and my bait wasn't jerking around. (Also helped if he lit his pipe, but that might have been a placebo effect.) I miss him, too. Crap. Onions...

It was WELL into adulthood that I realized, "You can't go fishing when it's raining because the rain knocks all the bugs into the water and the fish aren't hungry" was complete BS. Grandpa, rightly so, just didn't want to stand around in the rain.

Fish in seawater aquariums recognize their caretakers by their gait. They react differently to the steps of the person that feeds them, before they even started feeding, than they do to the footsteps of a maintenance worker checking the pump.
At least that's what people who worked in a seawater aquarium told me.

I used to keep fancy goldfish, and they would always get excited when I walked near the tank but largely ignored anyone else in the house. Don't know if that was vision or gait, but they certainly knew who fed them and could tell different humans apart.

Trout are super sensitive and spooked easily by anything they aren't used to. That's why when fly fishing for trout you have to be careful to use realistic lures that look and act exactly like what they're used to vs. dumbass bass that will strike at a neon orange gummy worm the moment it's wet.
