I've gone back and forth on whether I should make this post because asking for help has never really been my thing.
Like a lot of people in tech right now, I've found myself in a job market that's a lot tougher than I expected. I've put out a ton of applications, made it to several final rounds, and I'm still looking.
The good news is I have interviews lined up next week with Bumble, Apple, and a startup founded by one of Uber's co-founders, so I'm staying optimistic. I've been fortunate enough to spend my career at both startups and Google, and I know I can bring value in either environment.
I'm not looking for a handout. I'm just hoping this reaches someone who knows someone.
If you know of a remote role or something here in the Austin area where you think I'd be a good fit, I'd really appreciate an introduction.
My experience spans software engineering, technical program management, and agile leadership. I'd also welcome the opportunity to transition into product management because I've always been fascinated by the product side of building great software, and I think my technical background gives me a strong foundation for that path. That said, engineering is where I've spent most of my career, and I'm just as excited to contribute there if that's where I can create the most value.
I'm also open to contract work if you just need someone to help get a project across the finish line or fill a gap while you look for a permanent hire.
One thing this experience has taught me is that this market can humble just about anyone. If you're in tech, keep your network warm, keep learning, and don't wait until you need a job to reconnect with people. There are a lot of incredibly talented people looking for work right now. I honestly never expected I'd be one of them.
If nothing comes of this, that's okay. But if this reaches someone who can make an introduction, then it was worth putting it out there.
Thanks for reading.
Edit: If you have an app idea and wanted to talk to a professional who has shipped software at various scales, I would also be willing to have a conversation for a feasibility study. I can tell you about any competitors I know of, some technical hurdles you would have to face for implementation and any kind of regulatory/compliance issues you MIGHT face. I can do that for a negotiable fee just to try and get some income utilizing the skills I've cultivated. Some areas of expertise are in Nuclear Engineering, Defense, Semiconductors, Renewables, AI/ML/Autonomous Robotics, Trading, Payments and Digital Identity.

I'm sorry you are dealing with that situation. I've been there and know it's a depressing and frustrating time. What I did was "start my own business" and what I mean is I paid ten dollars to file a DBA with my state. Now there is no gap in my resume, I am running my own business. That can mean anything. I'm a freelancer or a consultant or developing something. Nobody can say I am not.

I lost mine in March of 2025. Been drowning for over a year. It fucking sucks out here. On my fourth menial job, finally up to making what I was making back in 2008. Starting the road all over again feels bad. Having excellent interviews where no one calls back feels bad. Canceling family vacations feels bad. Knowing my worth and wondering why no one else sees it feels bad. Everything feels bad all the time.

I'm envious you can get interviews. I haven't been able to get that far. Good luck with your potential prospects, please post an update if anything comes of those interviews.

Your observation, "keep your network warm," is the real key here. It was for me. I finally realized why when I had to hire a bunch of folks for a job. A personal recommendation often, but not always, put me in touch with someone who someone else felt would be a good match for what I was looking for.

I hear ya on that. I lost my job about a year ago and really don't wanna get back into it just because I'm so fed up with the tech industry and the people running it. Good luck to you out there

I also lost my job a year ago. I am 55. I was planning on staying there until I retired. Fortunately figured out I could retire now. I just didn't want to start over at this age. Don't want to stay current. Probably would get looked over for younger cheaper programmers. I don't miss programming at all. And I did it for over 30 years.

That's my biggest fear as an engineer (10+ years) and I'm staying away from any managerial/leadership roles, I'm not good at charming people and networking, industry is a state of constant revolution and if someone stops writing the code in ~3 years it's like he never was technical code and has to rely on making impressions.

This is the right way to ask for help.

Dm me your resume.
While I might not have direct connections that is one thing I’m good at. I’ll send you some resources I made back when I was looking to help get me a job.

Similar situation here. Like tripping and falling and every time I’m starting to get up a car drives by throwing the puddle water on me the someone on a bike not paying attention hits me and I fall back down. Was doing so well and have almost lost everything. Still surviving somehow. Sending positive energy. Hoping for both of us. 🙏🏼

Several years ago I was in software testing, doing contract work. I saw the writing on the wall. It's no longer a way to build a future. I pivoted, and went hard into public/government jobs where I could sell my tech experience as a benefit to an old school job. Public sector jobs may not have the payscale, but most have good benefits and a lot have union support.

Huge props to you. Good luck, seriously. I have been laid off twice since Jan 2024 from the entertainment side of the tech industry. I've had a decent job for a year now, but student loans and bills have been absolutely slamming me. I made a GoFundMe and post here just asking for a little help, and got absolutely reamed by people here. It absolutely sucks. Everything fucking sucks. Depression, money issues, self confidence, health... All gone to shit.
I fucking hope you get out of this hole. <3
ISayGoodSirCouldIHaveSomeGoodChemicals
ye the self confidence thing is a real kick in the balls. I'm not sure if I can not carry this with me unless I start my own company
GeekBoyChrisOnlySometimes
Then I hope you start your own company, and I hope I one day can support it.

Thanks man, I really appreciate that it means a bunch to me. I'll let you know if it ever happens.

Duolingo is looking for software engineers in Pittsburgh, PA.

Thank you for the heads up I looked at their postings and couldn't find any remote opportunities. Relocation is monetarily expensive and mentally and physically exhausting. Considering we just moved into a new home we aren't exactly thrilled at moving especially the farther it is. I've already started looking and applying in Atlanta, LA and North Carolina though so thank you for pointing this out as another possibility, I'll keep it as an option as well when the time comes.

Hey, no problem. I wish you luck.
