When I was a teen it was the 80s. Nazis were bad and the Russians were bad. They still are.

Nazis are bad. Full stop end of story. They are not good people. They do not have good beliefs and the fact we let them fester and comeback like the cockroaches they are, says we screwed up as a society. I never understood how suddenly being against fascists made me a bad guy. Fascists should be stopped and stomped.

I remember amazing thunder storms i the early 90's . Haven't had a good one in our part of the country for a loooooooong time.

Actually, it'd be cold.

I think part of the issue that not enough people consider is how 'Nazi' got so overused to describe anything bad that it robbed the word of its power, and it let actual Nazis sneak back in under the guise of 'Sure sure, you think I should eat less wheat, whatever you Nazi' stuff.

are people _really_ forgetting how large of a nazi problem there was in the 80's and 90's? And how the autonomous left taking the fight in the streets was what made them lose? Really?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes. I do wonder how that happened, but I think it had something to do with the Islamophobia and nationalism sparked by 9/11 allowing them to mask their presence, entice wider membership, etc.

Tolerance is a social contract. I am tolerant towards you and you, in exchange, will be tolerant towards me. We don't need to agree, we don't need to be friends, we just need to let one another exist and be okay with that. The issue arises when your beliefs promote a lack of tolerance, perhaps towards me, perhaps towards others. By abstaining from your side of the contract of tolerance, you yourself are no longer tolerated, and I am going to, in defense of myself or others, kick your teeth in.

In the 70s the Aryan Nation was formed and the ACLU was defending Nazis, the 80s had the Forsythe protests and David Duke being elected to the Louisiana state house, the 90s had Waco, Ruby Ridge, the ARA robberies, OKC, etc etc.

Nazis and related groups had been prevalent in the US since only shortly after WWII. To my understanding 9/11 just gave cover for their bigotries and ultra-nationalism to be expressed through the more acceptable Islamophobia and 'support the troops'.

+ oversize flannel shirts. Karhu beer in 1 liter bottles, cd’s, only 3 tv channels, no mobile devices (except the car phone), snack allowance, bff living in the same neighbourhood, hoodies, music festivals with normal priced food and beverages, teachers with resources, older cars (new then?)…

Disliking inequality is top priority though!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Omg yes on the normal food prices at festivals! 15 euros for a burger?! 14 euros for a very small portion of fried noodles?! I think one spring roll might've been 3 euros? One ice cream ball was maybe 6 euros? Fucking insane.

I know right, 8-10 e for a can of Heineken? I’m probably a hipster myself but that is just wacko... 12-20 e for a meal. You just get used to it but could not tell my dad what kind of nonsense my money goes to these days. Don’t want to startle and disappoint that sweet dude.

I’m at the point where I would rather bring a sammie and banana to a day out on a festival :D

Based on the stories my Grandfather told me about his own father's family fleeing Poland during the war: Only good Nazi is a dead Nazi.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

When I was growing up, the default bad guys -the ones that be slaughtered indiscriminately - in movies, TV shows and video games were always Nazis. They could be treated as such because we knew we a society that their beliefs held no good for us as a whole.

2 years ago | Likes 87 Dislikes 1

I remember a brief time in the 00's when gamers would often complain about nazis being the bad guys in almost every shooter. It seemed like publishers heard the message, as fewer and fewer games were focused on WWII as time went on. I think it's about time we got back to it.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

probably does not help that it was all cookie cutter WW2 FPS games. Kind of like as WW2 games faded we then go the deluge of cookie cutter war on terror FPS games.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well see there were people still alive who have lived through that. Growing up I had family members who have seen the camps, who have seen the soldiers and the war and the bombs. There were craters still. My grandma survived the mass rapes.

People talked about the horrors and they remembered. Now that generation is mostly dead and young idiots are idiots again.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Except the nazis they fought are a far cry from the nazis we face today. The nazis in in 1940's were literally making war and putting people in camps.

If you went back to that time, the belief "let's go kill that guy sitting on a bench in america and believes in naziism" would still have been unpopular, and, as today, you'd still go to jail for killing him.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

There are many differences. First off, many soldiers were drafted, and even some of the officers didn't truly believe in the nazi ideology. They were there just because everyone else was. The few who tried to oppose it ended up dead, tortured or worse.

And, yes, even in nazi times, murder was murder, inside the regime itself. If you can believe it, some nazi officers in charge of camps where their orders were to kill people, were punished for torturing them beforehand. German standards.

My pal was complaining "people are so politically correct these days, I can't do what I want". He wanted to wear a Nazi t-shirt while selling his bread in the market. That's when you know someone is too far gone and talking is useless.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'm assuming he didn't have the appropriate paperwork for selling bread?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your EX pal right?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why don't the Nazis follow their beloved leader and take a cyanide pill? They lost. We had a world War about it. You can't lose any worst than being the bad guys in the whole world.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's about goddamn time. So sick and tired of people acting like they need to take the high road of non-violence when violence is already at their doorstep. If words alone were enough to convince the nazis and fascists, Stonewall would've turned out very different. Come together and protect yourselves. Nazis are very good at breaking up communities that aren't able to push them out once they start cracking skulls.

2 years ago | Likes 171 Dislikes 7

See this here I think is the main problem and main source of division. A lot of people, including myself, hold the belief that unless someone actually does violence to you first (or other things like direct calls/reasonable threats of violence) it is wrong to do violence on them. This is commonly known as the principle of self defence. Therefore, when you start calling on people to do violence on a group first, it makes people see it as wrong, even if the defending group (nazis) are seen as bad.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Tolerance and non violence arent ideals, they're peace treaties. And no meaningful or lasting agreements are possible when one party negotiates in bad faith. They push for every confession, give none, then attack when you're vulnerable.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I appreciated Michelle Obamas "when they go low we go high" mentality when it was just "conservatives are dickheads" but when real nazis/facists rear their head you gotta embrace a more "fuck around and find out" mentality.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's difficult to say plainly what should be done when every social media platform seems to just outright ban any kind of speech that seems violent. Even if it's towards Nazis who deserve nothing but violence every time they rear their ugly heads.

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Facebook, and Twitter only ban violet speech, when it's violence against the Right.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True. I've had people outright give me death threats for talking shit on trump and after reporting it I got the message that "nothing is against community standards" and so nothing is done

Oh come on, even in satire there are no words. All of human history could be summed up in chapter two. We rode in on violence and were still confused how we got here.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It’s definitely not the best moral choice… but you should see footage of how uncharacteristically respectful cops and Nazis behave when in the presence of heavily-armed leftist protestors. I’m now of the opinion that progressives need to be visibly heavily armed in large numbers whenever the jackboots show up.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure if respect of mutual destruction is a gain. Those kind of people want any justification to shoot you as it were. When people who already feel disenfranchised get desperate bad things happen. Literally how we got a fascist running for office now. So I get a little pissed off when punching fascists becomes some thick headed war cry when we can't even vote them out of office in the first place. They loose their shit over pronouns, of course they want us to get violent.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I’ve learned one important thing about bullies. Some of them just need some love… but some of them are fucking damaged and beyond all redemption and the only thing that keeps them at bay isn’t reason, it’s fear. Some bullies need the fear put in them and it’s the one and only thing that works. Not civility, not common ground, just fear.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes there are some unempathetic psychopaths but you should also consider that those conditions are psychosomatic and they need therapy. Fear is just temporary, it leads to anger then hate. They may fear you but what if they find some one more vulnerable. We glorify posts of them getting punched but it doesn't protect their victims. I wish we were focused on taking punches and caring for those who were targeted instead of getting some video to the front page and patting ourselves on the back.

Have you heard about Neville "peace in our time" Chamberlain?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have he was an idiot. While we are arguing extreems we should have just killed everyone who was even remotely in support of Germany during WW2. They say you can't kill an idea but thats because they spared the women and children.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

So, do you apply that same reasoning with Radical Islam as well?
That only ends with you having to convert to their form of Islam and living under their rule.
Do you give Putin all of Ukraine?
And then give him Poland?
And when he demands it back, give him Alaska as well?

Yes, that's all a straw man argument, but it's also the truth.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's also arguing extreems. Escalating punching to killing all Germans after WW2. Nuking Israel for their own genocide. Starting a war with Russia then executing everyone who voted for Putin. Also truths are not in the forms of questions. At least stop pretending it's a solution for fascists when we literally have one running for office. Stop being a coward and admit you just enjoy it and you don't care about the consequences.

Until they are gone then it makes things better

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I agree with you. If I had gotten beaten up back when I was a nazi, that wouldn't have convinced me to change sides. I probably would've hated the left even more. Getting out of my hometown and my home country for a few years did the trick. 1,5 years in another country and almost 2 years in a different region of my home country, a region with a lot more immigrants from all kinds of backgrounds. Slowly I started to shift towards the left, and now I'm a liberal leftist.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

There were many situations where I was being threatened by violence back in my Nazi days, but I just talked myself out of the situations. One time a friend had to help out though. And now the people from the far right are making the threats. Punching Nazis in the face isn't going to make them go away though, and if we're violent towards them, it makes us look bad. And I get it, the changes Nazis want achieve are bad, but violence isn't the answer. They need to be snapped out of it in other ways.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

honest question: in your opinion, can a nazi be talked out of it by a leftist family member/ friend/ random stranger? If yes, any tips?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of fascists and their sympathizers. They take, and take. They don't stop until you make them stop. They will always keep crossing the line no matter how many times you move it. Sometimes the choice is not whether to convince them of something. It is to decide whether they are so far beyond reason that words can no longer be your weapon of choice. They already made their choice, and they didn't contemplate it half as hard as you.

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I think you lack a fundamental understanding of problem solving. Explain how punching a crazy person already radicalized towards violence makes them stop. You don't get rid of wasps by pissing them off. Everyone needs to stop being cowards and at least admit that it feels good and it's not a solution and you don't care if it gets some one killed. Save us the trouble and do what needs to be done the first time.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 11

Appeasement doesn't work. Remember the book the hungry hungry Hitler. Eventually you have to stand up and make people like that fuck off.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

While I can empathise and understand, Nazis want people like myself and my friends eradicated. You can't reason with people who are beyond it. We have to show we're not weak like they insist we are. It's not an ideal outcome but I'd rather kick a nazi than let them kick me.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I believe the idea is not to persuade, but to erase them. And by "them", I don't think people mean their MAGA racist uncle or their edgelord little brother, but rather the kind of people who are very well-informed of what it means to align with fascist ideology.

And if that's the case, then history agrees. These people are beyond saving by their own choice, and to allow them to safely exist in society is to almost be an accomplice to the harm they inflict.

It's an ugly, uncomfortable truth. :/

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This is what I mean though. We get to this point of identifying THAT solution, shy away and then resort to what feels good. I saw a guy get his ass beat in a bar once and found out later it was because he beat his wife. Short term gratification and justification. The only way that scenario works out is if they also made sure he could never hurt the wife or anyone else again. Instead they let him leave and my immediate thought was I hope he's not going home to his wife.
