The first one was pretty good but all the sequels were trying to catch lighting in a bottle for the second time. It just wasn't happening. The later remake they made in the 2000s or 2010s (honestly can't remember) wasn't terrible, but as you can tell it also wasn't super memorable either.

The freshness isn't what I would call the issue, it's more the subject matter. Penny Arcade was interesting as a gaming webcomic, not 'Gabe and his kids'. When they are actually talking about games, usually things aren't too shabby, I just can't *stand* the ones that focus on the lives outside of the context of the comic. Their families are boring as sin.
