It surprisingly is easy to fly smaller "mosquito" helicopters like this, similar to flying a cesna. Like driving a car or quad, operating it is relatively simple. Understanding it when there is issues, not so much xD

I was on a cruise once where a rescue helicopter had to land on a small pad to evacuate a medical emergency in high seas. Best thing I ever saw on a cruise. Mad respect for those pilots.

10 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

I knew a couple of guys that did this for a living. So long as the weather was clear and calm it was a great job.

10 months ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 1

god id love to learn how to fly one of those. such cool machines.

10 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Easy-peasy !
I can do this with my eyes closed and without a helicopter all day long!

10 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

My initial thought was bad idea being barefoot. But with a helicopter, I imagine there's a lot of minor shifts, etc you feel in the pedals, so he probably has a better feel for those minute changes. Just my theory though

10 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Actually, it is easy as hell. But if everyone knew that, all the helicopter instructors would be out of work.

I don't think I ever landed that plane.

Good to see hes got his safety feet on

Nice they put a rug in the landing pad so the pilot doesn't burn their wittle feeties.

Balancing a unicycle on a beach ball...

10 months ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 4

Try it in a LHA alongside an AOE in heavy weapons. You'd never hear the BOOM.

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

while the unicycle is actively trying to dismantle itself.

10 months ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

A former Huey pilot gave me that analogy... a Blackhawk pilot told me that it is mostly automated and the helicopter maintains its own stability....

10 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Probably both right, considering how old the Huey design is.

10 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

You don't see blackhawks doing the wild maneuvers old vietnam pilots could pull off with their hueys. Probably for good reason.

10 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I trained to be a door gunner on a Huey back in 1994... we were the last USAREUR unit to still have Hueys (we were OPFOR, but they wanted qualified door gunners on the M60Ds).... they rattled so bad everything I touched vibrated for like an hour after each flight.

10 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

It is simple. You push the paddles, pull the sticks and bob's your uncle.

10 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I know. I'm not sure why I would make such a big deal about flying helicopters. I could probably go out and fly one right now. No need to get one of those annoying licenses or whatever you need

10 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But... But... Where are the safety sandals?

10 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

No no no, this calls for safety squints.

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

98% of men on imgur report they could land a helicopter in an emergency situation lol "land" doesn't imply anyone needs to survive

10 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Junior: FLY ? YES. LAND ? NO.

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

what’s keeping it from flying right off after landing? velcro ?

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Gravity and friction. You change the pitch of the blades so they no longer generate the lifting force that opposes gravity. Friction keeps it from sliding

10 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Lack of lift, and the weight of the helicopter. If the rotor-blades are pitched to neutral, they produce no lift, and the weight of the helicopter keeps it on the pad, just as if it was shut-down.

I’m worried about a gust of wind

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

That's a fair concern, but given how smooth the seas are, I'm guessing winds are pretty light. It needs to be a really windy day to dislodge a helicopter. Plus, once they are down on the deck, they do tether them in place, just in case the winds do get worse.

I like the scene in Midway when Adm Halsey tells McClusky to switch to flying a dive bomber and afterwards when Best asks if he has any time flying that type he finishes his reply with "Can't be that hard; I mean, you do it."

The first time I saw that scene I just about peed my trousers, I was laughing so hard.

10 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I don't like when people comment on a movie/show/book/popculture reference but no one actually says what it is. So, thank you! I had no idea what it was either, and I even saw that movie when it came out.

Saw the aftermath of a fatality on rotten years ago. The deck lifted, causing the rotors to flex and hit a man on deck. The parts of him left did not make it. Growing up in the early 2000's was weird.

Having played a helicopter flight sim in the past, it fells so simply to fly a helicopter. I know the principles behind the controls, the collective, the pedals and the yoke, but I think if I did get in an actual helicopter I doubt I could even get it off the ground lol

10 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Oh come on, if you can ride a motorcycle you can learn to fly rotational wing aircraft. They say the only thing more harder to operate than a helicopter is a motorcycle. Because when you stop you don't have to put your foot down to prevent the helicopter from falling over.

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Speaking for myself, I enjoy flying helicopters but I suck at landing on ships like destroyers. And THAT was just moving in a straight line with zero bobbing in clear weather

10 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My brother, may he rest in peace was a chopper pilot who started his career in Vietnam. He described it as standing on a ball and juggling at the same time. He was a unicycle as well. And yes, he was my idol growing up and my hero later in life. Dan, he was the man!

10 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 3

There really ought to be a woman's name that ends in -oman

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeoman

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, he of course wasn’t a unicycle but he was a unicyclist!

10 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Maybe he really was a unicycle. That's why it was so different and difficult to pilot the helicopter

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hear me out
But I think this might be his second rodeo
At LEAST

10 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

It took me three or maybe four rodeos before I learned everything.

10 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm sure when you're that good you can dress how you want when you fly bu man it seems wild to not have shoes on.

10 months ago | Likes 277 Dislikes 1

I hate driving without shoes. I get that the tactile sense is probably better. It's just that it's slippery and hard to get a good locked-in feeling of the pedals.

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Idk I feel like there are wilder parts to this

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

now I wonder how it would be wearing wet socks

10 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

An absolute pleasure, who doesn't love flying helicopters with wet socks? Crazy people that's who!

10 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Maybe you need that touch to land on a moving target like that.

10 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Now that I hadn't considered.

10 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

For those who might not know, flying a helo involves using the cyclic stick with one hand to control the main rotor tilt, the collective with the other hand to control main rotor pitch (and often the throttle), and using the torque pedals with your feet to adjust rear rotor (or NOTAR) pitch. So easy! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicopter_flight_controls

10 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I'm totally barefoot when I rudder!

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

long pants and shoes are extra weight

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're right, you don't want to walk on the deck of an industrial ship. But I'm sure the pilot has boots with them. But for flying? He's only stepping on the controls and can feel them a lot better barefoot anyway.

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am a drummer and play without shoes, you can feel the pedals much more and that translates into more control (for me), it may be the case here.
Then again, pilot might just not own shoes, idk.

10 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Not as consequential as riding a motorcycle in shorts

10 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

I learned this years ago, the hard way. I was a passenger... From that point I like to have my skin in one piece. 🤷🏼‍♀️

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s how all hobbits fly their helicopters.

10 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I read this as hobbyists and was slightly confused.

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Easier to swim without shoes on.

10 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

That’s a good point.

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

it's also easier to swim without clothes on. Just sayin'

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

10 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I try to explain that EVERY time I go through security. Hasn't worked for me yet.

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I don't know if other languages have the expression "do the helicopter"? - it's a male thing...

10 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You just gotta keep it more than seven and a half feet above the ground. That's how high Tarantino can jump.

10 months ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 1

I appreciate this joke.

10 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I want you to know you just made me look up a bunch of stuff I never thought I would for this. According to some quick googling, Tarantino is 6'1" tall, or 73 inches. Average reach height is about 1.3x height according to a Reddit post I found that gave no sources, so that's about 95", or 7'11". And an average jump height for an untrained male is roughly 16"-20". We want to be safe so we'll use 20. That puts us up to 9'7". And that's just a vertical jump from standing, so I'd go 10 feet minimum.

10 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

i had no idea tarantino was that tall. for some reason i always assume he was kinda short, like 5'7" or so

10 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You aren't taking into account Tarantino's absolute hunger for toes which will easily get him another foot (heh) or two of height on that jump.

10 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

I love the theory that one of the natural predators of helicopters is Quentin Tarantino.
