Maybe by the day's standards he was being charming and affable but he comes off condescending today. Queen of software holds Tupperware parties? I liked her demonstration of a nanosecond though.
Was briefing a flag officer once who asked why we couldn’t just….. before i could open my mouth and say “physics,” I got kicked under the table by my boss.
She's held in high regard for her comp sci stuff, but she had great management philosohy, too. She said people don't need managment. They need leadership. Processes need managmernt. Give your workers the reports to let them manage themselvsz and their processes instead of the manager holding them and using them like a stick to beat on people after the fact. Management should be looking outwards at things and let employees manage the inwards tasks.
In network programming we would often explain to others that, "it doesn't work like that because the speed of light exists". I also like this explanation.
Being a robotic engineer I constantly deal with managers who don't seem to realize the difference between skill limits, practical work limits, hardware limits, and hard laws of physics. They would just ask me if we can make the speed of light faster.
It's honestly impressive how often someone in the c-suite comes up with an idea, whose successful execution would require breaking several laws; judicial, of physics, or both.
Everything is relative - compare what COBOL could do at the time compared to what was before it. I mean I'd like to punch the jackass that made Fortran a personal hell for me in college but I'm sure it was amazing stuff to someone not a dumbass like me.
No, FORTRAN was created by mathematicians to do math things. As a general programming language, it sorta sucked. That was what made K&R's C language so interesting. It was the first actual language that was about telling the CPU what you wanted to do, in a language that was (mostly) platform independent.
Well I guess that's why I sucked at it - math. I got all As and Bs leading up to college and even aced pre-calc but once I got into Calc I my brain broke.

That is such a cool way of communicating that.

I met Grace Hopper and got to hand her a shovel at a ground-breaking ceremony.

Nicknamed, Amazing Grace. I only knew about her because of the novel Calculating Stars. She's a pioneer.

I had a work colleague tell me that solar eclipses happen because the Earth's gravity bends the light around the Earth.

I had something similar happen, I told them that I thought that they were so stupid, they probably thought a light year was a normal one on a diet.

I saw her speak at college in the 80's. Totally amazing. She was one of the inventors of the COBOL language

But we'll forgive her for that.

Not sure what people dislike about COBOL. You can write it very similar to modern languages if you choose to.

i thank her for making my programming career last as long as it has
