I use mine multiple times a week. I eat more rice since I bought it.

Always wash your rice. We Asian people don’t know why other people don’t do this.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do you like rice? Then get one.

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Personally, I dont like them. A pot works fine and you don't need additional storage for it.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Getting a Zojirushi rice cooker changed my life, no bull. $170 up front, but worth every penny. ᴵᵗ ᵉᵛᵉⁿ ˢᶦⁿᵍˢ ʸᵒᵘ ᵃ ˢᵒⁿᵍ.

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Just started using a zojirushi with IH. Totally worth it although waiting a hour for rice took getting used to

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Twinkle Twinkle little star

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Their bottles/thermos's are spectacular too, Keeps ice in water for like 8 hours. Madness!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I've had a Zojirushi for 7 years and use it every day.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got my Zojirushi for 8$ at a thriftshop! Then spent 40$ getting a new pot for it so I wouldn't constantly be eating teflon flakes....

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm Chinese and I literally have never seen rice not made in a rice cooker until I came to the US

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I’m Chinese American and never seen rice not made from a rice cooker.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like my rice cooker. Makes life easy

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Grew up with one in the house and now that I've got my own place I've been jonesing to get one BUT Asian brand ones are hella expensive yo!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Zojirushi is life

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I see nothing incorrect about this response. My cousin was like get an Insta-Pot, it'll do the same. NO...no it will not...Zoji Gang 4 Lyfe!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

IF you like rice, get a rice cooker.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hells yeah. Bought one on Overstock.com 15 years ago. By far it's my most-used single appliance except the coffee maker.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have an instant pot. It's great to cook rice in and multifunctional. I've made soups, stews, chicken, ribs. Thr possibilities are endless

4 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Hell yeah! Pot-in-pot ftw!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me too! I was thinking about getting a rice cooker, but I don't have room for an appliance that does 1 thing only.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It doesn't do 1 thing only. It's basically the same thing as a slow cooker, I make all sorts of things in mine, from rice to stews, etc.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love my pressure/slow cooker (what Instant Pots are). DM me if you want ideas on what you can do with them. Rice is only the beginning.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It’s great idea

That much water is a great way to make rice porridge. 1/2" more water than rice, no more.

A bargain rice cooker was my husband-to-be's first gift to me our first Christmas. We'll be married 30 years in a few months; rice cooker 1/

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

still works fine.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Same, mine is one I bought somewhere around 7 or 8 years ago at target for like $30, thing has been a workhorse

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Buy the cheap one with a single button. It's literally all you need.

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 3

Aroma brand. Had mine for years, cook rice 4-5x a week and it's lovely. Basic is all you need.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I have a cute red Oster brand and it's perfect.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless you want to make Japanese style/sushi rice. The simple cookers can't get it right, it ends up undercooked.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

After reading this an OP's earlier post, I'm now convinced rice cooker owners are like cast iron owners...

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey let me tell you ALL about my cast iron pans and then howsabout we discuss your car's extended warranty while I blender my hands off :)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You seem to have a lot of pent up anger over getting a rice cooker because you're bad at doing something (cooking rice).

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Complaing about "unsolicited advice" after posting about how he failed to do something the hard way when there's an easier and better way.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

None of which will make my kitchen any fucking bigger plus MY HUSBAND DOESN'T WANT ONE. It's shitposting. Imgur would be what without it?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As far as I see your only two options are to either never cook rice or to get a new husband..

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also.. I tried to voice to text this with the water running.. this is what I got...

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't do it if you have a small kitchen. I cook rice in a covered sauce pan and it comes out perfect.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's good if that's what you want. I cook my rice in a pot but that's me

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You and me, pal. I'm not getting a fucking rice cooker. It's a ruse.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I was too drunk to realize this post was you dicking around but instant pots are amazing, fuck just rice cookers.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Man, you two are missing out. Frees up an element, no watching or dicking about with the simmering or timer

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Perfect rice, every time. Steam your rice/fish on top, meal in 15 minutes. Get a rice cooker!!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm not gun ho about it. I would rather use a rice cooker but no space on the counter. I gotten use to the pot

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I might be with you if you hadn't already fucked up cooking it in a pot.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get a fuzzy logic one. It's insane the difference

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Grabbed a Zojirushi right before the pandemic hit, hands down one of the best decisions I’ve made.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A Japanese coworker gave me his even he moved back home. I had to make my own labels of course, but it's unreal got well it works

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@OP out of curiosity, did you ever read the instructions that came with the rice?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I WAS HOPING MY ILLITERACY WOULDN'T COME UP. Thanks a lot sheesh.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Also, no need to be snappish, it's your own fault you're a culinary wonder of the modern world.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Jesus, it's a joke, no one is snappish. Have a great night, princess :)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's Queen Jesus to you, you ricey tragedy you.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And you thought I was going to talk about my farts with you. AS IF.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ignoring the printed instructions is a time honoured tradition. I'd ask if you maybe have poor gas flow, but that's your business. ;)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm a decent cook. But I fail with potatoes, pasta and rice like 90% of the time. One cannot be good at everything.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can give you advice, but DO YOU like rice?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's a good idea if you have rice now and again or more often. Practically idiot proof. Maybe.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You haven't met this idiot. Eyebrows eyebrows eyebrows.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I admit I laughed. Hah.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’d recommend a pressure cooker like instapot or the like instead. It’ll make rice in like 8 minutes AND you can make other stuff in it too.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

I made rice in an instant pot a few times, always turned out terrible

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s gonna take a little experimentation, but it works. I’ve been making rice in mine for years.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I made rice in an Instant Pot and it took like 25 minutes or some shit because it recommended natural release for no stick.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fair. I only like sticky rice. I suppose dry rice would be pretty hard to make in it.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I actually don’t know how instapot does, I have an emirel pressure cooker. Takes 5 minutes for basmati and 8 for Japanese rice.

Uncle Roger definitely suggests rice cookers.

4 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 2

Suggests? The man dreams of scoring a sponsorship for a brand of rice cookers.

4 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 2

I would buy an uncle roger rice cooker.

I asked a Chinese chef for his secret to making perfect rice. "Put water+rice in cooker, press go" 2.25:1 water to rice ratio for stickier.

4 years ago | Likes 200 Dislikes 3

Wait you are measuring your water and rice? I do when it's in a pot, but in a rice cooker I just eyeball it

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Our standard is 2:1 water to rice by volume.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

With short-grain rice (pearl rice), rinse well until water runs clear, then 1:1 rice to water. Perfect.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Add a skösh of rice wine vinegar

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

I like to add sesame oil. Any leftovers get frozen, frozen rice is ideal for stir fry/fried rice

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Good tip

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fuck the ratio, just fill a pan with water. Take it out at 10 minutes exactly (as packet says) and it will stop absorbing water.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Yeah, no, we skip the math. Just dump in the rice, rinse it, and then put in enough water so that it reaches the first joint of your finger.

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

That’s crazy. We put ONE and a quarter cup water with 1 cup rice and it comes out perfect every time. Curious.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

VERY much depends on the sort of rice. I do 1.5c + bit of rice vinegar per 1c of basmati. Perfect every time. Zero stickiness.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also: my cooker is very cheap, so I need to be a bit more accurate.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It doesnt matter, the rice cooker stops when the water boils off anyways.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Another common way to measure water is to add 3/4" more inches of water (about one fingernail's worth) than the riceline.

4 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I prefer to use the big toenail dip test.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Something something anything but metric

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Are you putting fingernails in the rice cooker? Be honest, because my jar of fingernail clippings went missing.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Saw a Craig’s list post 7 or 8 years ago selling a jar of their nail clippings. I have the screenshot somewhere

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, that’s how you get that extra crunch

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup, rinse, do that, and once the water is mostly gone remove from heat and cover, (I put a piece of paper towel between the pot and lid.)

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you put less water, use v low heat once simmering, lid on pot right at start, walk away and come back 20 mins later.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's why the towel and more water though. No risk of burning at all. Same thing let it sit. The rice with absorb what it needs and (1/2)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The paper towel wicks away the rest. (2/2)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A rice cooker is 100% a great idea if you're ever going to cook rice. If you're never going to cook rice in your life, maybe skip it.

4 years ago | Likes 964 Dislikes 5

Truth.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or get 5 minute rice. Yup. I said it

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Follow this guy for more life hacks.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Who doesn't cook rice?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, if you were gonna make a roast chicken, I wouldn't suggest using a rice cooker.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You could probably do a pretty good poached chicken in it, though.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Its faster to just boil the water, add rice, bake covered at 350f for 20 mins...

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 15

Why would you use your oven to cook rice?! What a waste of energy!!

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Not if you are baking other things as well. Sorry i offended you though.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You think that's bad, my wife uses the oven broiler for toast. As if a toaster is some extravagance.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Right!? Cook it straight in the electric kettle :)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I use mine to cook hot dogs.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I would say invest in an instant pot, which has a rice setting but does a whole bunch of other things. No they don't pay me, but they should

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Not sure if an IP has a normal long term steam mode, but I also use my rice cooker to steam/boil whole potatoes.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

When cooking rice, toss in a couple eggs as well. You'll have hard boiled eggs when the rice is done!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

but ya gotta get the one w the elephant on it

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I only use mine to cook oatmeal

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Tried that one, burned it. Still get nightmares of the cleanup

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mine has a porridge setting best oatmeal ever

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A rice cooker can be used to cook more than just rice. Mine also has a steamer basket that I can use for steamed goodies.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you do it right, you can also make a really amazing and cheap set it and forget it single pot dish. I'll sometimes throw sliced ham and

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

medium sized cuts of potato into the pot with the rice. Give it a little stir to mix things, then you can steam it all.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bought a Tice cooker with the intention of eating more rice. Spent $300 on a japanese rice cooker and have used it like 2 times.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I bought one for $15 that just has a switch on the front, and I've used it maybe twice a week for the last 20 years.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I use mine to cook rice. And then when I'm not cooking rice, I use something else.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I use the heck out of mine. Also let's me steam veggies

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

As an Asian, I can't imagine not owning one.

4 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

As a son of Asian immigrants, we just use pots. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I cook all sorts of noodles in mine

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hope by 'rice cooker' you mean 'cast iron wok', because otherwise, disgraceful.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 26

Why?

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It’s pretty easy to make rice without one. That said, every Taiwan household I’ve visited had one. It’s just too convenient.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, well obviously because I think rice cookers are useless. Did you really have to ask that?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 27

Yes

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think the question is more why you think that. Don't you like convenience? Having one less thing to think about while cooking?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or you could, you know, just toss some rice in a pot and cover it with water and a lid. You don't really need a special tool.

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 12

If you make your rice like pasta, you're already doing it wrong. I do it, too, but it's still wrong.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where the heck did you get pasta from all this?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Apparently a fair few people do.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, shame most people don't know how to cook. You can literally make most store bought rice edible with non-boiling hot water. Not ideal.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I can cook rice in a pot at my parents... have yet to succeed at any other city....

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, here's a friendly bit of advice. Add some butter to the pot, approx twice as much water as rice, less as you add more of each. --

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Boil all of it already mixed together, cover, reduce until it's barely bubbling.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Usually about lo-to-2 on most stoves, depending on type and power.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Like any other kitchen gadget, if you do something all the time and it makes that thing take less time/work/attention, it's worth it

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Eh, don't get me wrong, if you're eating a bunch of nothing but rice, go for it. Otherwise. You're gonna be in the kitchen anyway

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

My 4 burner stove can only handle so much. The rice cooker frees up valuable flame

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Oof, okay, you got me on that point. Last time I made a several-course chinese dish, I was juggling five dishes on four burners. Hectic.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1
