Delta- LEROYYYYYY JENKINSSSS

Needed perfect execution

They found a gap to take off in between the arm of Irma

Tight squeeze

Hurricanes Suck

Freedommmmmmm

Wow! Without modern computer, radar and communications technology these planes would be in deep shit. ????????????✈????

Hurricanes are safer to fly in opposed to severe t-storms due to the unique directionality of air current flow.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I was in a gulf stream that flew into a thunderstorm and I would have sworn we were all dead. The violence of the wind sheer, 1/2

Apparently it's easier for planes in a hurricane, since it's stratified and horizontal winds. Thunderstorms are vertical and more random

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

Also That plane is not to scale on those radar images. It's not as tight as it looks. But still I'd be nervous.

It's quite possible ATC cleared them "departure at your own risk"....

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I would guess airline's risk. But I don't know how this kind of thing works for commercial flights.

I heard on one island planes were being torn to shreds by the 185mph winds, better to have them try to get away I guess.

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

so long as the wind direction is in line with the runway and the windspeed is reasonably consistent, it can be quite windy & still doable.

9 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

I heard the runway was only around 20-40mph at the time of takeoff

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly. I'd actually like to be on that flight; it would be kind of weird to see such a low ground on take off with an airliner.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

bear in mind the plane is built to be able to fly into a 500MPH "wind" all day...

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

theres a diference between "wind" of otherwise calm air relative to the motion of the plane. and "wind" such as turbulent, flowing air.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

i don't know what's worse, that you managed to use the term "relative" while missing the point, or that 4 imbeciles missed it with you.

Any storm that produces large hail (hurricanes don't due to the warm core).

Idgaf if that plane can fly through the fucking sun. I don't want on it

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 5

Not saying it was a good thing to do, just saying it wasn't luck. Pilots knew what the plane is capable of.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Probably a retired Hurricane Hunter pilot, they know what those airliners can handle :)

9 years ago | Likes 870 Dislikes 8

Well jet engines aren't used for a reason in hurricane hunting. They can get water logged very quickly.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Look up ge90 water testing and you'll be proven wrong...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I'm talking the amount of rain a 400mile wide hurricane dumps. It's not healthy for the engine. Turbo props are better suited

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

What the passengers can handle on the other hand... v

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Generally speaking, they can handle more than your feeble, fleshy body can withstand.

But can they ahndle a cow throught he windshield?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How long does it take to get to an altitude above the hurricane?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Depends! Parts of Irma have measured to be >10 miles (52,400ft; 16.2km) in height, while most commercial airlines are limited to 45,000 ft

P-3 Orion's

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 1

You have a point about hail, but hurricanes don't produce hail. They're too warm.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Actually they do normally. It just never reaches the ground because of the freezing level height. However a very real concern for aircraft.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Can't most commercial airliners fly over the storm 30,000 ft plus? Just a question, looking for an answer.

As a pilot, no. Hurricane cloud tops (aka t-storm tops) reach up to 50,000'. Very few acft can cruise that high. Severe turb/icing in clouds
