I turn off all the customized ads/tracker things I can the first chance I get with pretty much all my apps. It's not perfect, but they are mostly for random bullshit that I do not give a shit about.
Mostly tiktok and conservative shirts. While I do hate seeing those ads, I'm elated that the products have zero relevance because it means I'm doing something right with those settings.
I got more serious about it after some of the creepy, surprise suggestions after simply talking about stuff.

The ads are getting demonstrably worse. Some of them are just really super disgusting. I thankfully have only seen them from people posting them. And then the posts get removed, but the ads don't seem to cause somebody else will complain later about the same ad.

For me it's more about like, the ad is OK but any posts talking about how disgusting the ad is disappear, which just feels dirty. I block ads in my browser and at the DNS level so I don't even know what kind they would show me.

What I've seen mods do is hide the complaining posts about the ads. They don't delete them (or we would get pissed) they just hide them. So OP won't easily notice and it's still gone.

1 - There is an NSFW tag that's supposed to allow people to post NSFW stuff... but the way they react to that makes zero sense.
NSFW ALSO generates traffic.
2 - That's not the point, if they allow NSFW ads they should allow NSFW posts... or again it makes zero sense. A "all age, nothing shocking or even remotely sexual" site should not allow such ads ever, or others advertisers won't want their ads here.

Yeah, Imgur wants posts to be SFW enough that advertisers feel okay having their products between any two random posts. Ads don't need to meet that same SFW threshold, because an NSFW advertiser won't care about which posts they're displayed between.

lots of ways to block tracking/cookies/fingerprinting/etc. if you don't do anything to decrease the availability of your data, it may be more based on demographics, whatever info they can get of you, than just direct history. so if you happen to be in an age bracket, have certain apps on your device, in an area of the world, and have searched for hot dogs recently, maybe a meaningful percentage of them like my little pony, so now you will get ads for that even if you have never searched for it.
