Interesting to see the permanent control surface movements to artificially balance it into something resembling aerodynamic stability. (Planes like that are inherently unstable, they can not be flow manually)

My dad used to work for a defense contractor that worked on F-18's and with modernizations on them (he's retired now). He even got a ride on one (jealousmuch.jpg). He told me that the jet, and every other fighter jet ever since, is basically flown by the computer. It's far too unstable by design to be flown by a human, is what he told me. So basically the control inputs by the pilot are mere requests for the jet "I'd like to do this please" and the jet can be like "nah bro" if it disagrees.

I'd say it's more like an an emperor and his network of ministers. The emperor (the pilot) says "I wish to do this" and the ministers (the flight control systems) go about assessing the empire's (the plane's) status both within and without and doing what is necessary to achieve the emperor's goals as much as possible.

It was my only excursion into the series. Was 6 really that much better? Please explain in detail as I'm currently trying to decide if I should try to fly a different plane on the mission I haven't finished, because I haven't completed the game yet. I just feel right in a Mig over something with more horsepower but I don't think that's gonna complete the game for me

7 seemed entitely too gimmicky and fragmented. Dogfighting seemed more focused on "do the one trick to force a lockon" than anything else and it really broke that mix between "sim" and "arcade". They also got AC-130 turretgunner in my fighterpilot bingegame and that is rude. Too much non-airplane gameplay.
tbf 6 wasnt perfect either, Ive got some nostalgia blinders for sure. and its on 360. at least 7 is on Steam.

6 felt a lot more varied. There are trophies for doing the entire campaign in the same jet and it is ROUGH but doable, and thus fun. Heavy groundpounding with just an F-14 is yowch! Conversely, dogfighting with an A-10? set aside some TIME. Or you could do it all in a berkut - good top speed, built like a steakhouse, handles like a bistro.
Some planes were just objectively better/worse in 6, but they all felt usable and spirited. 7 didn't seem to have that. too much f22 / f35 hype. booriiiing.

Electronics are constantly making small adjustments while the pilot makes the big adjustments. I.e. the control system translates the pilots commands and makes them work.

Absolutely, but that's not what we're seeing here with the harmonics in the control surfaces. You can see them vibrating with periodic motion, likely due to turbulence. It isn't the control system doing this. My question was whether or not the pilot can feel this in the stick. Even with fly by wire there's likely haptic feedback or some kind of feedback mechanism.

It is the control system. Modern fighter jets are designed to be dynamically unstable. The control system has to constantly make adjustments to keep them flying smoothly. It enables them to be more maneuverable. They have fly by wire. There's no physical cable for the pilot to feel

I understand. But even electrical control systems can have damping built in. Even fly by wire systems usually have some kind of feedback mechanism too. So my question was whether or not the pilot can feel this vibration through that feedback mechanism.

No, that's the B variant.
The A variant is for the Air Force. It's the fastest and lightest, so best dog fighter*
The B variant is the VTOL one that's for the marines. It's a heavy boy with the extra VTOL stuff so is the worst dog fighter*
The C variant has extra support and a larger wing for carrier operations. Second best dog fighter.
*Dog fighting is dead. Even the F-14 was vastly better at making over the horizon kills than at dog fighting. Air combat now is all about who sees who first.

Want to know the saddest part? Our healthcare is so inefficient, so expensive, that we could have more than that with a universal healthcare system as efficient as Canada's.
We could have our current taxation levels, double the defense budget, *and* have several hundred billion dollars left over. This is not an exaggeration. The US spent 16.5% of GDP on healthcare in 2023; Canada spent 11.2% of GDP in 2023. US defense spending was 3.3% of GDP.

I have heard that despite the HUGE expense that healthcare is to corporations, they are also against UHC or two payer systems because healthcare is one of the yokes they have to bind employees. Logically every employer in the nation would be lobbying for UHC because health plans are expensive. employers and workers pay more to insurance than they would even with the taxation increase to pay for a national system.
