What color would that religion insignia be, Pete?
Resistance1000
Still 30 more to get rid of, eh, Petey? It must suck to have such a weakly-held faith that you need to do this to bolster it.
NoneOfYoBiseniss
When I joined they forced me to choose a religion even though I told them I was agnostic. Found out later its how they pad the numbers.
EverNotRelevant
TIL "heathen" was a recognized religious position until this came along.

He's not "War Secretary," because there's no suck fucking title.
Of course they axed Paganism, Wicca, and Shamanism...
schmonday
You're wrong. That title does indeed suck.
Base841
Check the source, Faux "News." So of course they're sucking up to the administration and their silly play time tags.
PalaverQuader
hehe. "targeted religious support" sounds like a threat

Religion (ALL of them) in general shouldn't have a place in politics, governments, or militaries in the first place, full stop.

This broke the Constitution in two places. Lawsuits will follow (looking at you, Satanic Temple). (And you, Military Freedom of Religion Foundation.)

WowThatUsernameIsSoOriginal
of the 31 recognized religions, the vast majority are various flavors of mostly protestant christians, which i found hilarious to think as "different religions"
mercyPandaRunner
They are. Where do you draw the line?
TrashCanEnthusiast
So there are 20+ types of Christianity (including Christian - Non Denominational, surely that could cover most of those 20?) but no difference between Sunni and Shia Muslims? No difference between atheists and agnostics? It's not about where the line is, it's about how unevenly that "line" is being applied.
mercyPandaRunner
Oh yes, absolutely. It's a pretty open display of christian supremacy here. They would go further if they could get away with it. You just know they are grinding their teeth they are not yet allowed to cross Islam from that list.
Nephytis
jzbstl
I knew there were a lot of religions, but damn.
NoneOfYoBiseniss
I don't want freedom of religion, I want freedom FROM religion.

Fun fact: The US military has NEVER refused an illegal order in its history. It has always gladly committed illegal wars, genocides and oppression. The US military is not the bulwark against fascism, it is the forefront of fascism.
Stanistani
False. In a massacre against Native Americans, two officers disobeyed orders to fire. In the My Lai massacre, an officer disobeyed illegal orders. Many service members have disobeyed deployment orders they considered illegal.
Beardedgeek72
PENTAGON has never refused illegal orders. Individual officers, sure. The Military as such has never taken a moral stand that contradics "Kill brown people / communists for fun".
Stanistani
Incorrect. The Pentagon is a building. Your initial comment is still incorrect. I worked for the DoD for 35 years. Read up on military terms and chains of command before you make sadly wrong statements. There's plenty wrong with the US; you can take the trouble to research something for ten minutes before you pontificate on a subject you know exactly *nothing* about. If you need help in constructing the 'fun fact' you are trying to express, ask me politely.
Stanistani
Efter noggrant övervägande har jag helt enkelt beslutat att blockera dig. Du är en idiot.
HamAdvocate
“‘Chaplain,’ he asked casually, ‘of what religious persuasion are you?’ ‘I’m Anabaptist, sir.’ ‘That’s a pretty suspicious religion, isn’t it?’ ‘Suspicious?’ inquired the chaplain in a kind of innocent daze. ‘Why, sir?’ ‘Well I don’t know a damn thing about it. You’ll have to admit that, won’t you? Doesn’t that make it pretty suspicious?’”
NM156
Doesn't Anabaptist just mean not Baptist! Suspicious!
wqpsu
actually no it means re-Baptist, so twice the baptism
ToSisPoS
All these people that took an oath to defend the constitution? It would be great if the constitution defended them in return.
Resistance1000
Kegsbreath also stopped chaplains from wearing rank insignia (they're all officers) and dictated that they replace it with symbols of their faith, so now it's even easier to spot the non-christian ones.
certainlynotaserialkiller
we have a millitary chaplain in our family, that is 100% the actual reason. they all know it. anyone that isnt christian is not kicked out but certainly being shown the door.

These stupid little bitch babies think they're going to create some big fancy crusader army, despite their complete inability to inspire faith or competence.

I used to be recognized as Jedi by the Army, really hoping that one stayed.

in basic my only options were various christian cults, the jewish cult or "no religious preference" - those were the only things you could get printed on your issued dog tags.

Marikhen
Did they add Felon or Insurrectionist to the recognized faiths in order to cater to the MAGA faithful?
TunnelRat13
In 1914 military Chaplains were authorized to wear the rank of a First Lieutenant, to emphasize their functional role as both a pastor (keep the year in mind) and an officer. During WWI, Gen. John Pershing order them to remove rank insignia for the same reason Hogsbreath is using. Without rank insignia, commanders came to view Chaplains as “accessories with no standing and of questionable value” due to being seen as outsiders. (sic) in 1926 DoD reversed and restored rank insignia to Chaplains.
TunnelRat13
Given that history, this would actually point to Hogsbreath trying to remove religious leadership and guidance, making it easier eventually to instill patriotic fanaticism in soldiers. "Nazi ideology could not accept an autonomous establishment whose legitimacy did not spring from the government. It desired the subordination of the church to the state" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Nazi_Germany

So, I did some more checking and found DoD Instruction 1300.17
Basically, if your religion is not on this list, it does not negatively effect you and the practice of your religion (if a commander denies your right to practice, cite the above and demand the denial in writing and watch your CO get annihilated).
That being said, back in 1992, I was denied Yom Kippur off cuz my chain of command hadn't heard of it and said I made it up (amazing what a chaplain can do... they got me three days...
bippityboppitybuttsex
... off, and set me up with a synagogue in Regensburg (the closest synagogue to Hohenfels, well, not a synagogue, the Nazis burned that one down in 1938 during Kristallnacht, but it was a meetinghall for the Jewish community (all 14 of them)).
I will note, I got Rickety Rickety Wrecked with some Russians at the break fast.

I’m glad you managed to have a memorable holiday despite the inconvenience..and thanks for your service! 👍
bippityboppitybuttsex
TBH, it was pretty cool mostly cuz of how many shots of vodka I did.
Table5
I liked that story. Thank you.
bippityboppitybuttsex
You want to see surreal, walk up to a synagogue in Germany in 1992... two Polizei with MP5s were guarding the entrance (give off a serious threatening vibe)... they looked at me like I was from fucking Mars (I was wearing slacks and a shirt with a tie, I did not have dress coat), they asked for ID, I handed them my US passport and my US Army ID (old green style with the laminated photo).
Inside it was welcoming... I met a German couple that fled in 1938 (for some reason) and came back...
bippityboppitybuttsex
... in 1946.
I asked them WHY???? and they said they were German and this was their home.
They were working on rebuilding the original synagogue, they ended up building a much simpler one... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regensburg_Synagogue

At long as you work Easter and Christmas I guess we are all good.
ServerMonkeyKing
Man, barracks duty doesn't give a shit what your holiday preferences are.
bippityboppitybuttsex
Every year, I would find out who had Staff Duty on Christmas and volunteer to replace them... every year the person who had it said no (I just assumed they thought they would have to owe me something and didn't want the obligation).
Now, I volunteer to be on call during Christmas week... Do people actually celebrate Easter, I mean, like go do stuff? or is it just a more intense church thing?
Wait, that's the one with the bunnies...

I was kind of dumbfounded when my platoon sergeant said he had never heard of it... it also just may have been that hilarious antisemitism you read about.
I grew up in NYC so, having people not know Jewish high-holy holidays would be weird.
Callynd
NYC has a higher population of Jews than anywhere outside of Israel. And I'm talking in a country sense, not a city sense. That's why the bagels are so good there. But it's such an anomaly and getting used to growing up in an anomaly is hard.

Hot and cold running Christianity, why would you need anything else /s
But I'm sure they want to trim some of those, too, since some Christian sects don't think other Christian sects are valid. They don't open their eggs from the correct side.
NotThisGuyAgain
Good Gulliver reference there, mate!
Luorric
Kind of literally, the new list has a bunch of it specified. But the old list was pretty much mostly weird christianity branches too, with stuff like;
Ohio Early Meeting Of Friends
Open Bible Standard Churches, Inc.
Independent Denominational Endorsing Agencies
Primitive Methodist Church, USA
Luorric
Some more;
Baptist General Conference
Freewill Baptists, NC State Convention Of
Christian Crusade
Church Of God (Cleveland, TN)
Kansas Yearly Meeting Of Friends
bippityboppitybuttsex
Fun Fact, the US gov't doesn't get to decide 'which religions are recognized' all of them are recognized... every religion has equal worth. The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is no less valid than Catholicism, under the eyes of the Constitution.

It's definitely not as bad as I thought it was gonna be with Muslims remaining in the list. You are right though.

Yeah, I'm sure Hegseth is real concerned about the Constitution

"every religion has equal worth" of Zero.
With a capital Z because it's a capital piece of information.
bippityboppitybuttsex
Be that as it may, all religions are equal under the law. You cannot pass a law or make a rule that says one religion is better, or worse, than any other.

See, and I was trying to exaggerate a little.... there is no fucking bottom.
Note, my own dog tags had Jewish, then No Rel Pref, then Atheist... cuz at the end of the day, you could order replacement tags from a vendor and write anything.
If I were in now, they would say FSM... a note about the US Army, if your tags say anything other than a specific religion, you are getting Christian funereal rites.
PolitiCat
Religion has no worth. Religion is evil. Religion is a lie. Religion needs to be destroyed.
bippityboppitybuttsex
So, I think of religion like a penis. It is ok to have one, it is ok to play with it, but you need to play with it in private.
And using your religion to tell other people how to behave or justifying passing a law to punish those who are not members of your religion, is straight-up, evil.

“Recognition” = protection from discrimination, observing the proper handling of human remains, and other manifestations of the serviceperson’s right to the free practice of religion.
That can include wearing skull caps, turbans, facial hair, carrying implements of faith, etc.
bippityboppitybuttsex
Yes.
And there are Siekhs in the US Army that have full beards and turbans (e.g. https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna40113583 and that was 16 years ago).
