WE FUCKING DEMONSTRABLY knew what it was in the early 80's,... FFS "The Love Boat" made an episode about it and people were like "Oh,.. yeah that's kind of weird I guess, but whatever", and that was the extent of it,.. ENTIRELY. The network wasn't boycotted, no one burned down the TV station. People didn't care. The GOP takes issues & HYPER villifies them to their low IQ base.
What’s even more insideous is that now polling shows that more people oppose trans rights than they did 5 years ago, so the Democrat-aligned consultancies are telling politicians that sticking up for trans rights is a losing issue, completely ignoring the fact that the right has been running a propaganda campaign against trans people for 10 years while the mainstream Democrat apparatus has not pushed back against it at all, ceding ground in this culture war. Democrats: the lesser of two evils.
"In the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) by George Orwell, the Two Minutes Hate is the daily period during which members of the Outer and Inner Party of Oceania must watch a film depicting Emmanuel Goldstein, the principal enemy of the state and loudly voice their hatred for him followed by declaring their love for the Party leader Big Brother." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_Minutes_Hate

It worked, my maga parents now hate everyone and everything. Maybe boomers were always angry little pricks but it seems they have gotten much worse since agent orange
This is the same guy who at a similar function, just blatantly said smart people don't like him. And of course no one in his audience understood that time, either 😂
Ok so what does he have? Charisma? I do not get it. He seems awful on millions of fronts. My used to be friends were just average conservative. And then this. Racism? I mean yes, but that was baked in GOP. He is just everything you would avoid. Old. Bad tanning. Out of touch. Bad at business. Convicted. What is the draw? Even if you are GOP?
"Five years ago you didn't even know what the hell it was." Of course not, because the right-wing propaganda machine spent the last 5+ years doing everything they could to demonize transpeople.
I can remember when it started, and it was such a peripheral issue. I couldn't care less. Then they started talking about post op men competing with women, and that's when I clicked in as "Whoa hold on. That's insane. You can't have big men competing against little women"
And so did millions of other people, and the people pushing it knew that. And that's when I learned how easy it can be to manipulate even (self-described) intelligent people
I can’t tell if you are just paraphrasing how the fat fascist’s little brain works (using words far more intelligently that he could) -or- are you saying people can be manipulated by the thought of say LeBron James transitioning, and then becoming a WNBA player that scores 840 points a game.
Were you simply up-translating his words for us, or were you saying that people fear trans men having an unfair advantage in sports?
5 years ago I started my transition...after 23 years of trying and failing to get out from under my Far-Right parents' thumbs...I first came out in 1997...
Ive talked to a lot of trans people who said trump's raising awareness of what being trans gender is, helped them realize they are trans and to start transition.
Yarp. I doubt it would've kept me from realizing had they not tried to raise shit about trans people, but it happened a lot sooner because of it. Still two decades too late, if you ask me, but still.
I was buried deep enough in conservative bullshit that I didn't know any truth about trans people. As the hate machine wound up, I got the ick and decided that I needed to know the truth. The truth sounded very familiar. I may have taken until 37 to figure things out, but I am just glad that I figured it out before my daughter. The regrets that I would have had, if I had been dumb enough to hate her... I'm just glad that it didn't happen.
I probably would have transitioned years ago if it weren't for parents, siblings, years of steeping in anxiety/depression, and the (basically) cult that I grew up in. Time goes on tho
One of my favourite podacsts is hosted by 2 trans women (& an NB guy) and a year or two in there were people writing in or saying after live shows that just seeing them in the public sphere gave them the strength to transition.
one of them heard a yell in a hospital from someone who just got their bottom surgery.. and the end of the anecdote was hilarious. She was like "I can't promise I'll personally be physically there when every one of you get their vagina, but I'll be there in spirit."
That sounds amazing! If you have the name, I'd be forever grateful. The main podcast "network" I listen to has a trans woman as an occasional guest and co-host of stuff like Going Back: a Lost Rewatch Podcast and she's awesome! (Also her stand-up is chefs kiss) Always on the lookout for more queer content creators. <3

We've known what trans people are since the early 1900's, its just that most trans research was burned by the Nazis.

I'm saying that seemed to be the clicking point. That was when people decided that trans people were a threat and not just a harmless difference.
As far as mental image, I think southpark got it perfect with the Heather Swanson character.
