Honestly learned one or two new things, but @theexcelguy forgot about to mention the F4 shortcut for locking a selection of cells.
Don't cut and paste into a filtered table/range, that's how you get DIRTY DATA that you have to go back and fix later. It's even worst when it's a public sheet and some OTHER dingdong does this, then you have to find and fix THEIR mistake.
vlookup you have to follow 1st index formating though... or do some choosecol({range1,range2}) sorta thing in the vlookup... it also doesnt have a native fallback or invalid return field... like there is defintly places xlookup is just much more convenient
I’ve never heard of xlookup but from the look of it you can skip the annoying step of counting the number of intervening columns. It clearly seems to have a purpose and is superior for that purpose

I had no idea there was a thing to do this, I always would have concatenated a new key field (I.e. two conditions) and vlookup by a two-part field

I work at a school where I was originally help desk, but now I teach and do design work. There are 2 types of kids I get, the... "Do we have to use .NET? I'm better with C++ from Unreal modding. / Do we have to use Premiere? I'm much better with DaVinci Resolve" kids, and I get the... "What do you mean, right-click?/I don't get it, I'm holding ctrl and c, how do I know when to let go?" kids... worse than that, some of my "graphic designer" colleagues aren't much better.

Your kids and their school are an edge-case in today's world of iPad babies, TikTok brain rot skibidi rizzlers, and education funding cuts. You must live in one of those states that values "education" and "skills development". My state, like so many others, has pretty much eliminated any sort of typing or computer literacy classes from the curriculum. Somebody's gotta build the buses. Thankfully I'm a huge nerd who helped my kids build their own PCs in elementary school and taught them myself.
I'm finding 20-30% of my students have computer skills above the level of our average teacher and 70-80% are well below pre-ipad levels. Very little middle ground. There are 4 middle school kids in my last makerspace class of 12 that can do semi-professional level parametric CAD designs with constraints, labeled features, etc. They've been designing stuff on their parents work/gaming pcs for 3d printing since they were little.
Then there are always kids just coming into high school that are skilled enough to be fully employable in Photoshop just entering my digital photography class, or aspiring film makers who already know DResolve well beyond the scope of a video editing class. Comp Sci club kids regularly have 5-10 years of experience coding from messing with stuff in the roblox/minecraft/fortnite/etc modding communities.
As a grade 8 teacher, most youths don’t know any of the computer skills we assume they know. They are literally either creating and selling code for god only knows what purpose, or don’t know how to insert a table into a word document. There is no in between.

That's because it is. The numberpad is there to replace the 10-key calculator. The ENTER key is located in the position of the = key on the 10-key, which runs the calculation you entered on the calculator. In other words, hitting the "=" means "run the calculation" (not insert an equal sign) on a calculator, just like hitting ENTER does.
BUT, if you really want to turn it into an equal sign, just remap it through Microsoft PowerToys. Open the Keyboard Manager and remap "Numpad Enter" to "="

Nah, just click and drag your range, the number of columns will pop up so you don't need to count. Still, xlookup may still have good uses!
