Also, fuck Illinois nazis
HuruinaInu
Second takeaway: Illinois nazis (and frankly, all nazis) can drive off a very high bridge
PartTimeHobbit
One of those last points was touched on by the intro to the first song on their Briefcase Full of Blues album: https://genius.com/The-blues-brothers-opening-i-cant-turn-you-loose-lyrics
It's actually a great album to introduce someone to the blues. Listen through, then go look up the original versions (they're all just really solid covers) and see what you like. It introduced me to the blues, which is now one of my favorite genres (especially Chicago-style).

DamnedIfYouDo
The Blues Brothers weren't even a skit, they were a band who performed on SNL.

Four whole fried chickens and a Coke.
...and some dry white toast, please.

Filanwizard
Oh honey we have both kinds. Country and Western.
dontrike
A shame the sequel wasn't even close to that
Kotarisu
One of the greatest films and of the greatest soundtracks of cinematic history.
Filanwizard
Hit it.
Filanwizard
Could never make this today, lots of the artists are dead.
Hoiloidl
At least I got to see the Blues Brothers Band performing live in 1992 (only non-movie performers were drums and keyboard).

Kotarisu
Still one of the most hilarious shots (and scenes) I have ever witnessed in my life lol
therandombagofmeat
I have exposed my kids to many of the movies I loved watching as a child. My 20-year-old daughter is obsessed with this movie and the soundtrack. I think it’s awesome.
Kotarisu
It is awesome you do that, and also that they enjoy it!

Good luck explaining that to Carrie Fisher.
CALAMOSCOPYJANE
She caught the Katy, left me a mule to ride.

I’m confused. Is this post praising the movie for preserving the music against the push for commercial entertainment, or criticising the movie for being the commercial entertainment that accidentally preserved the music?
Corrodias
Good question. The text is well over my head -- I don't know what "metacognitive" means -- so I will leave this reply here in the hope of coming back to it later to an explanation that I might understand.
a2s2020
I found this item on Threads and judging by the comments I reckon the intent is: Ackroyd made the movie with the music he loved instead of, say, Disco
Hoiloidl
Ackroyd also went up to Belushi, a rock fan, like: You're from Chicago, you gotta love the blues not rock!
a2s2020
Belushi realises Ackroyd may be right (colorised, 1978)
Hoiloidl
Belushi in the snow is a nice touch.
Sebastopol140
This music still exists... it's still there... it's just not "mainstream" anymore. Oh and
RobertAG25772
Nothing is “mainstream” forever. But just about everything “survives” in one form or another.
AnonymousSourceOfGenitals
But the movie actually revitalised the careers of the musicians when most of them were struggling. There used to be a way harsher cutoff of popularity in genres before the Internet, and it could kill careers
DownUpUpDown
Yeah always gets me people get mad at how things are mainstream but then complain when things they like aren't mainstream yet they are easy to find.
shinoharaliz
The sequel, Blues Brothers 2000, which incredibly hhad an even weaker plot than the original Blues Brothers, did a lot to showcase both current and future blues performers
homemadechef
Is it accessible? Is it on a format anyone knows how to use?
thisisnotfineffs
The Blues? ......yes
homemadechef
Not every artist, no, but then again is every artist worth saving?
thisisnotfineffs
Nah, usually the culturally relevant ones are the ones with staying power. I'm sure there's many classical composers no one remembers
Sebastopol140
Tons of them.
