Could be both. I forget the actual science behind it, but when we are low on certain nutrients or calories we tend to crave things that are easily accessible, even if they are unhealthy.

I recall that eating dirt is a craving some pregnant women have when they're nutrient/mineral starved, and it still happens today. Knowing that, it reasons that it's more about calories, and maybe salt.
