The use of toast to refer to raising a glass in someone's honor comes from the fact that a slice of spiced toast used to be added to cheap wine to improve the flavor. The idea was that, just as the toast improved the flavor of the wine, the person being toasted improved the lives of those around them.

My nephew did this when he was a kid. He asked where the birthday cake was for Jesus during Christmas. It's supposed to be a celebration of his birth right? A cake makes sense. So we now get a very simple cake every year. Nothing custom ordered or even says what is for.
