Yes, it takes a lot of skill and training, but it's also pretty much a standard technique for rescues on steep slopes. They train specifically for this.

You can find the entire video on youtube. The person filming is part of the group of skiers that called for their friend to be rescued (broken leg). Medics take their buddy to the hospital and the other skiers get down the mountain by their own means, since they're not in need of rescue.

Chopper pilots are some of the most insane motherfuckers I've ever seen. Probably comes from just piloting a machine that doesn't want to fly, it's actively trying to _not_ fly.

That snow is probably very hard, or even icy. Also the angle of the helicopter in relation to the slope, the downdraft is going backwards behind it, not down into the ground

There is substantial downdraft. The helicopter wouldn't fly otherwise, it's an unavoidable reality. That's just an icy slope fixed in place.

It does. And it used to. This particular heli is now called H145 for Airbus Helicopters since EuroCopter was bought and merged with Airbus.

There are countless tragic stories behind the creation of the PGHM. Mainly the 1950 Malabar Princess Air India plane crash in the Alps. First rescue team died (they did not even know no passengers survived). The rescue team that was rescuing the rescuers died. The most experienced mountain guides died trying to either get to the plane or save the ones trying to get to the plane.. It was decided rescuing would be left to professionals, highly trained Gendarmes.

Frequently used method for high mountain rescue with no landing or unstable area on steep inclines. Loads of skill required, the sites are usually windy, “thin” air spots, making it even more difficult to control the helicopter. Mad props to all rescue pilots.

Well, SAR techniques are outside the norm of “normal” flight operations. A SAR pilot I know was taught by the senior pilot while familiarizing him with the terrain and likely areas of rescue, with falling snow, wind, ice, etc.. he became extraordinarily proficient in that mountain area. He did say that some of the techniques seemed counterintuitive and was amazed that they worked. He also mentioned he was a bit terrified the first few weeks. Lol
