Just use VLC player and go to Tools then Effect and Filter, then Video Effects and turn on Image adjust and give brightness more juice.

No, HBO Nordic here and it was bad. Not only dark bad, but poor quality dark grainy bad. (I did like the episode, though.)

On an LED TV, turning up the brightness could actually make it worse because of the backlight. Use theater or normal mode.

Yeah, I suspect this (and the fog) was for a similar reason, although I've heard it was also a streaming issue not everyone experienced.
