We usually say it's an animal, a plant, a fungus, a chromist, and a bacterium. "Protozoa" might work for the pural, but if you lead with the singular article "a" you need a singular noun.

I always thought that was odd. Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim and metronidazole are the oddballs. But I'll be the first to admit I don't know enough of the chemistry to understand why they work on protozoal infections.

It is very complicated stuff and I don't pretend to know all of it, but the simple version is that "antibiotic" really just means "poison that happens to work on bacteria and (generally) not human cells". In this case the antibiotic used blocks cells from producing folic acid, which is needed for dna reproduction. Humans don't produce folic acid (we ingest it) so we're immune, but both the bacteria it's designed to work on and this parasite need to make it to reproduce, spread, and survive.
