Unfortunately polygraphs are not flawless lie detectors. You get lots of false positives and lots of false negatives, which is why they're not admissible as court evidence. In the end, they're about as reliable as guessing.

It is a completely subjective reading of effectively random outputs. You can hook a houseplant up to a polygraph and the polygraph expert would not be able to tell the difference. Research was done on this, but instead of "researchers prove polygraphs are completely useless", the mass media chose to go with "researchers find that houseplants have feelings!"
