I remember so many of these. Any one else remember sitting your phones up on the end so that when they vibrated they did a little dance? My friends and I used to do that at lunch in high school, and see whose phone was the champion.
I actually didn't fill up my 50 MB HD for my Amiga. The most I ever had on it was 18MB. The problem was all my games required to be boot up off of floppies. And I mostly used my HD for learning C++.
The hard drive on the first computer I ever worked on was 10MB and we had to GLUE it into the case since there weren't mounting brackets for it inside the casing. Played Dark Ages and Reader Rabbit and EGA Trek on it.
Fun fact: that's an apocryphal phrase normally attributed to Bill Gates, but Gates denies ever saying that or similar, and argues he was pushing for more memory. There's no credible source for that quote.
...what?? 40GB was standard in 2002, I had a 200GB drive by late 2003 or early 2004, and a total of over 1TB in drives by 2005-2006. (And for the record, I double-checked our local computer shop selection from archive.org - all the pre-built computers had 40GB or more, and most of the disks in the selection were larger than 40GB, with only a single disk smaller than 40GB [20GB, which was priced almost identically to the 40GB drives])
20 years later and it's standard to have 1 tb disks by default, with naturally much larger options in HDDs with 26+ TB available. Wonder what 2040 will look like.
Those christmas cracker screwdrivers came in handy for adjusting the heads. One thing about tape loading was that if the loading sounded like it was failing, you could just rewind the tape a bit and let it try again. The dark side is that it failed so often. Or the tape wore out. Or got some weird rust mould. Got so crinkled you had to give it the 'two pencil wrack'.
