I recently went to a place that had a sign for urinals on one door, and cubicles on the other. (Plus the separate accessible toilet, as usual.) I thought that was a good way of doing it, just use the bathroom that you need, no gender expectations.
And I think a lot of disabled people here feel that if anyone feels unsafe in the regular toilets for any reason, it's acceptable to use the accessible one. [It would only be a problem if people occupy it for non-toilet things.]

I was in a unisex barheoom once, i did a double take because it was full of girls doing their makeup, i went outside to look at the sign again, then went back inside and had a slash. As i exited the stall i saw some guy who looked like a German backpacker have the same reaction, 70 liter back pack and everything. which was a bit odd since this was in a highschool in Norway.

More and more restrooms here in the US are being redesigned and designated Unisex. I love that - except i miss urinals. So much less water used, so much faster to pee, you can fit 1.5x as many urinals in the space of stalls, and such shorter lines at big events when not everyone needs their own stall.

Im from Sweden. Obviously we are a much smaller country but I don’t think it’s about that. I have never had separated bathrooms at work or school. Where do you live? In Manchester, most places I visit have gender-neutral toilets, often complete little rooms with their own hand basin and everything. The university where I work has a mix but the newer buildings have large gender-neutral toilets with rows of private stalls and rows of hand basins/dryers that anyone can walk in and use. The Daily Mail might be blowing it up into an issue but in real life, most people are just not bothered. Everyone uses the same bathrooms at home, after all.

Urinals are sadly still a thing in many places, but I've always hated those. They seem like an anachronism of more primitive times when men didn't care about pee backsplash on their pants and shoes. Nowadays, fathers might need to change their baby daughter's diapers or accompany their toddler-age daughter to the bathroom and the kid shouldn't have to look at and smell the communal piss wall.

Most bathrooms are designed for easy mopping and cleaning, which means the stall doors don't go all the way down to the floors, and this has a side benefit of easy access / escape if someone gets locked in or a door latch malfunctions.

1) It makes it easier to know the stall is occupied by the dead body of someone who ODed.
2) It makes it easier for prudes to make sure no one is having relations in the stalls.
3) Most importantly it's cheaper, both in the amount of material needed and in that the gaps allow for absolutely awful workmanship.
I'm pretty sure 1 is a post-hoc explanation since they long predate freaking out over people ODing on heroin. 2 may have been the original more publicly acceptable cover for 3.

1) hits home for me. We had to call emergency services for people ODing in the bathroom at my old job(a restaurant) more than once, and with a floor to ceiling stall nobody would have seen them on the floor and people actually could have died.

Eh floor to ceiling is probably not the best wording for what it'd really be, ie have a door/walls that go to the top, but a small but reasonable gap at the floor (if nothing else for water to get out). This would allow signt lines of shoes (ideally just so) or if someone were down you'd see that. However it wouldn't be so much that walking in if see like 50% of their legs.

I mean 1 and 2 could still quite easily be covered by simply having like a smaller gap near the foot of the door only. Ideally and honestly I doubt this is a real issue, but if that gap is say 3 inch or so it'd make it easier for the occupant to see if someone were peeping in on them while still affording way more privacy. Honestly it's the top and side gaps that kill me I sware you can make eye contact through the fucking door.

Most of Europe has very private stall design compared to the US. Our stall doors will have a 1-2 gap on all sides, won't go to a full 6 feet, and have a good foot and a half at the bottom much of the time. Hardly a saloon door. Europe tends to have much tighter regulation on stall construction, with hardly any gap between doors even if the following two traits are present. The floor gap I don't mind, it's meeting eyes with a dude fighting for his life to get the last inch of the snake out.

I've been to 14 different countries in Europe, so some 90 bathrooms give or take? Only 3 have been sketchy, even by American standards. Literally a room with a toilet dead center just because planning required it somewhere, no door at all. I especially recommend Eastern European bathrooms and Swiss bathrooms. Greek and Italian bathrooms tend to be either bog standard or scary and confusing.

Positing that assault may occur is exactly why an individual would need a separate room and I’ve been assaulted, so I get it. Discomfort comes in many ranges. Single use is the legal term for a single occupancy restroom. I use to make ada signs and that's how it gets classified legally. Full door, and lockable. No partitions, no shared space.
In California, those are now gender neutral bathrooms. I think they all should be like this. I kinda hate pissing next to people.

Sometimes they express mortification upon realizing their error after grabbing or blocking, (ex: butch, tall, or just wearing a shapeless parka), other times it's dismissed as an "understandable error," because "it's not my fault she didn't respond to 'sir? sir!'" Other times they double-down and still won't let someone pass. Super-gross experience for people to get accosted like that.

I know a few bars in my city that have designed their gender-neutral toilets so that you have to walk past the row of cubicles (proper cubicles with floor to ceiling doors) and even turn a corner to get to the row of urinals which can't be seen from the doorway or the handwash basins. I have used these without even being aware whether a man was using a urinal. Everybody gets to do what they need to do, nobody cares - unless someone walks right out without washing their hands. Eww.

If someone is looking then they’re being creepy as hell. I personally value a little bit of privacy when using the washroom so I never use urinals, unless I don’t have a choice. The only issue I have with (non single occupant) gender neutral washrooms is the availability of stalls. There’s already a line for them and that would get so much worse if you double the number of people using them. I don’t care what’s in your pants, just hurry up and get out so I can pee, please

Putting urinals in stalls? No, but it is generally just wasted space to have a full stall for a urinal.
Removing urinals all together will just result in the seats being full of piss when (mostly drunken) males try to pee like they do with urinals. I bet every female is begging for non-unisex restrooms after that - from personal experience no female that I know of wants to use public unisex restrooms exactly for this reason.
