Confined space training is terrifying. My job regularly involves looking for abandoned oil/gas wells and they regularly have eroded cavities around them or buried tanks that are ready to collapse. Don’t even go near crap that looks like it might be an opening into an underground/enclosed space!
And if you do, never go alone and never try to rescue your friend alone if they do pass out. Ideally you'd have them tied off and contact fire/ems first. If you have a 3rd person and it's something you could hold your breath and extract them from, then maybe try to enact a rescue. But that's a strong maybe, it may be a toxic gas rather than just lack of oxygen, and shit like hydrogen difsulfide (iirc) will literally cause irreparable brain damage in seconds of exposure. Shit is the worst 1/2
Thing you can find with digging or exploring. Even if you run the moment you smell it, you're likely going to suffer severe and lifelong harm, if you even manage to get clear. The scary shit is you can just find pockets of it a few feet below the surface in many areas. Once your body expends the chemicals it has to buffer it, you're basically dead. 2/2

Hydrogen disulfide (aka dihydrogen disulfide) is a yellow liquid that actually smells interesting and even pleasant, but it breaks down into sulfur and hydrogen sulfide (which is the toxic gas you mentioned above). Depends on the concentration of it and the individual of course, but regardless it's nothing to mess with. If you smell it gtf out.
It's even more dangerous because at higher concentrations (by "higher" we're talking a little over 100 parts per million), it deadens your olfactory senses so you can't smell it. A few hundred parts per million will knock your lights out in a snap, giving you no time to realize something's wring and react.
