The funny thing is I didn't think COVID was that bad in the beginning but I still played it safe, like I didn't wear a mask much but I also didn't go to crowded places and I switched to online shopping for food. And I was fine. (When I actually read up on COVID I wore that mask like it was a holy relic wording off vampires

I still wear a mask indoors at gatherings - so, classes, supermarket, work, public transport. I don't outdoors or at friend's places when there's few people because that turned out to be important for me socially. Every time I think of stopping at work, for example, another wave hits. A colleague lost 70% of the vision in one eye. I can deal with being the only one, haven't got a cold in two years.

Good deal. I still see people here and there wearing masks. I assume they have their reasons, so I give them a wide berth. My youngest just had pneumonia. I was avoiding everywhere until I knew we were cleared. I didn't mask up because we simply weren't around people.

I avoided any and all indoor meetings and outdoor crowds for a long time, because a friend of mine has a progressive muscle paralysis, affecting her breathing, too, and I wanted to keep seeing her (masked, outdoors). Then I moved away and had to make new friends, build a network, so that's when I switched to what I'm still doing now. I get that not everyone sees the same trade-offs I do, I'm still surprised so few people wear masks. Best cost-benefit ratio, imho.

We have more information in retrospect. Only N95s and distancing were effective. These masks were rarely available except for healthcare workers, and distancing was poorly communicated. There was a time we were allowing for cloth masks, made from old clothes, poorly worn, to be worn in close proximity with others, which were very ineffective but projected safety. I pity everyone who is poorly informed and die as a consequence.

Id say "I wouldn't mind because his death would've taught others a valuable lesson" but it became clear VERY quickly that everyone attached their identity to "not wearing masks" that no deaths could convince them otherwise, between parents saying that they don't regret anything after their kids die or wives/husbands having maskless parties while their loved one are literally gasping for air over zoom, there is LITERALLY no hope. If its a proper mask it does, and even not great masks reduce transmission chance. The cloth masks people made actually turned out to be pretty effective, it wasn't a 100% reduction like a properly fitted n95, but they still worked.
