Hey friends, I wanted to recreate this photo of my dad that passed away. Wondering if anyone in Pburgh NY might know the location? Any ideas should be helpful, thank you.

*Edit* it’s Plattsburgh NY in 1987

There's a YouTuber that is stupidly good at finding things like this from a single photo. Rainbow something... Hang on. Rainbolt. Here's one of his videos where he's helping someone. https://youtu.be/QguH6cPToxQ?si=ggu5v64V7c7B0o2m

Can't help you for the location but take my upvote. Good luck.

He appears to be carrying a softball and mitt… are there baseball fields near where where he lived in the photo’s time frame?

i assume plattsburgh NY USA is meant? sadly there are a ton of soft/baseball fields there, but i checked some for those lanterns and this location seems to have similar ones...maybe thats a start? you could also check retirement homes in the area for older people who might remember how the city looked back then and where that photo might be taken... https://maps.app.goo.gl/uJjyVidEwsuz4a3S8

I agree those lanterns are close, but they're not quite the same: if you look closely, their tops are round, not angular like in OP's photo. I did find some 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘺 similar ones in a neighbourhood of Phillipsburg NJ, though, in case OP was mistaken about the state: https://maps.app.goo.gl/TDv1uprTsgBbi5HR6

There’s a YouTuber that is a god at GeoGuesser and finds locations like these for people. Goes by RainBolt, you should check him out.

@op have you tried this yet

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve never heard of “Pburg”… also an approximate year of the photo in addition to the actual town name would be very helpful.

May want to try r/WhereIsThis on reddit.

Sorry for your loss.

Going to be tough to recreate an image that's mostly plants because they will have changed enough to look completely different now.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Your dad was hella jacked

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ask the geoguessr dude

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're going to have to give some more detail on where i lived or what he could have been doing there

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks like baseball and glove. that could be downtown. The lamp could be anywhere. Valcour or the us oval maybe?

What a unit

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

your dad was a brick house

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Yea if op wants to recreate this he might need one hell of a workout routine

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He's mighty mighty just letting it all hang out?

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

He's got to tuck it in his pocket so it doesn't get loose and bite someone

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Kind of looks like Prattsburgh, NY. A small town in Steuben Cty. in the Southern Tier region.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

you mean like he said in the title of the post?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Sir, between the white socks and the tucked in polo he may have reached the ultimate level of dad power.

How about the Jorts?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Hey @OP I may have found something for you... except that it's in Phillipsburg NJ, not NY. How certain are you about the state?

In any case, this neighbourhood just at the SE edge of town, out near Greenwich Township, has 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘺 similar streetlamps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/HbCVoHNUKeWwfBB59

I haven't yet found that specific spot (searching now for something like the birdbath/fence in the background) and several of the streets don't have Google Street View, but it may be a start?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ok I've gone over every stretch of road with Google Street View in that neighbourhood and come up empty. Also that area looks like it was only developed in about 2000, while the one in your photo looks more like it dates from the ~ 1960s (or even the '50s?).

That's not the only neighbourhood in Phillipsburg with those streetlamps, though. There's also eg: one around Buckley Hill Dr. in the NE.

There's no GSV at all there however, so I can't help much. Still a bit bullish on Phillipsburg tho'.

You could try to ask this guy https://twitter.com/arithmoquine/status/1785834410312454389/photo/1 - or better the guy at the screenshot

2 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 6

But if guy at screenshot dead then guy no make answer. You be silly man guy. Why you make silly word to guy from post? You can no think for real to ask man from death? No can you to be for the serious.

He uses “ai” to identify places based on images

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

What ai would one use to do so?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That is the kind of thing AI is supposed to be used for. Scanning for patterns to save us time of having to do it manually

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I tried searching the image with your dad removed but no luck. It's probably somewhere residential maybe?

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

lol that's dark

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 2

Ha! Okay y'all that wasn't what I was going for, the Google image search kept trying to return images with similar looking men. Oh man... I'm going to hell aren't I?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

@OP Philipsburg, New York?

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Wait, what?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I looked into it, it seems like that’s a possibility… “Pburg” appears in articles about Phillipsburg…

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I grew the town up the river from pburg. That’s what we all called phillipsburg, New Jersey.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or New Jersey?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OP says "NY" in his post, so I would infer not New Jersey.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ON THE OTHER HAND, I did a bunch of Google Street View searching around Plattsburgh NY for streetlamps of that style and I came up empty-handed, but I 𝘸𝘢𝘴 able to find something similar in a neighbourhood of Phillipsburg NJ, so you may be on to something! It's possible OP was mistaken?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was thinking Plattsburgh

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Granted I was 6 in 82, not ringing any bells for plattsburgh. The painted curbs and that style of street lamp weren't a thing here.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Has to be

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've only visited NYC once, so I'm clueless for everything else. Thanks!
