My S23 Ultra takes great pictures of the moon. Granted I don't use the Samsung camera app. I downloaded a raw camera app off the PlayStore so I am in control of all the functions and it's not letting bullshitxby anywhere near my fucking photos.

Use video mode. Zoom in all the way. Hit record. Touch on the moon to focus and then click the camera button that shows next to the video record button that is currently recording.
I'm not sure why my vid camera zooms in farther and adjusts brightness better than the camera camera part, but it does.
I use a pixel rn and before that all iPhones.

Get a tripod, learn about iso/shutter speed/apateur, have a camera that can deal with all of those.

I think I tested with my old Samsung after seeing this 'technology' was included, and took a picture of a dime under a cloudy glass cabochon so it really was just a milky whitish/silver dot. The photo that came out had all the above defining features(although was the right 'color') and the photo was 5-6x in size than any other photo taken at same res(even if I pointed camera a few inches to left of the dime the photo was like 2mb tops)

I believe the issue is that phone cameras typically have a field of view of 100-120 degrees, which is ill-suited for taking pictures of something that is only half a degree wide.

They edit anything vaguely moon-shaped to have way more lunar detail than it could have from the original photo. A guy proved it by printing a blurry, undetailed photo of the moon, putting it on the wall, and photographing it. Suddenly he had a sharp, detailed picture of the moon that couldn't have possibly come from the original.

I just recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultraaaaaaaa Combooooooo and it takes great pics but you can literally see the thumbnail change as it post processes the image. That's even with all the AI Slop Machine nonsense that I could possibly disable on the phone being turned off. Maybe with a tripod and all the pro-mode settings being perfectly tweaked all while looking through a telescope you could get a pic like that one.

Fairphone / Morena. That being said, while not invasive in terms of privacy, I've had some issues with their software myself. Apps or notifications I couldn't deactivate. I actually had more beeps and problems than with any other phone for 10 years.
Guess that's currently the price to get back privacy and break out of Google and others
