It's not. This gaudy statue you can buy on Alibaba is actually a 'pterippus', a winged horse. They are a part of the subset of flying horses from Greek mythology, though there are many flying horses in many mythologies.
There is only one Pegasus, he is the king of the pterippi, and is partially divine/monstrous. He sprang into being like Athena or Aphrodite, only instead of coming out of Zeus' head or some sea foam mixed with Titan gore, Pegasus came out of Medusa's blood after Perseus cut her head off. Pegasus is the steed of Bellerophon, the hero who slew the Chimera. Pegasus died later on when Bellerphon caught the stupid and tried to fly up to Mt. Olympus. This here painting was done by Fortunino Matania about a hundred years ago or so.
So, to reiterate, calling any winged horse (or pterippus) a pegasus is like when your grandma calls all smartphones iPhones.
Or referring to many mundane dudes by the name of their most famous and awesome dude. Now, go forth and sin no more when talking about fake creatures that don't exist.
