Just 33 years old, a decorated retired Marine*, he was rendering aid to Ukrainian civilians as a volunteer for Global Outreach Doctors
His wife, Alex Kay Potter, wrote on Instagram: “He died doing what he was great at, what gave him life, and what he loved, and apparently by saving a team member with his own body,”

*Thank you @GlamazonDonut for reminding me that "Once a Marine, always a Marine." I corrected my text.

Here’s another upvote that pains me to hit the button.

https://www.huckmag.com/art-and-culture/renegade-medic-of-mosul-saving-lives-frontline/ seemed like a great guy.

Why doesn't someone's assassinate Putin? Honestly so many are dying over 1 madman.

FWIW @OP, whether they’re active or retired, there are no “formers”. Marines get twitchy about “once a Marine, always a Marine.”

God bless you, Pete.

My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends, gone too soon

RIP ?

Fuck you, Putin
AustinZee
Fuck. This guy volunteered to serve with the Kurds as well. In a documentary called “Fighting ISIS” or something.
penzick
Yes. @Trimule found the preview here: https://www.imdb.com/video/vi269860121/?ref_=vp_rv_ap_0 Seems like he was an amazing man.
AustinZee
He was. Favorite subject of the documentary. Real good dude. I’d recommend giving it a watch if you haven’t considered it yet.
Trimule
He was featured in "Hunting ISIS" TV series about foreign volunteers with the Kurds in Iraq. Served as a medic - he can be seen 1/

Thank you for sharing that.

Putin having the policy of killing the healer is such a dick move that only has a place in video games.

I’m tire of Russia. It may seem callus but can we just make Russia a crater? Or, I dunno, send in sexy spies to get close and kill the…

high ranking officials? And do the same to China and North Korea too?

Genocide IS Putin's plan.

"Global Outreach Doctors provides both allopathic medecine and..." Stopped reading right there. I'll stick with Doctors Without Borders.
penzick
What I'm reading in this comment is that you care about supporting orgs that help make the world a little better. Whichever you choose, +1.
DoNotQuitYourDayJob
Thanks
DoNotQuitYourDayJob
Allopathic is a term only used by "alternative medecine" grifters. Members like Pete certainly have pure intents of helping, but I doubt...
DoNotQuitYourDayJob
the org itself.
penzick
Not only totally fair but smart to look into any org before giving. And Doctors Without Borders is certainly a great one.
Midgarmerc
Isn't firing on medics like a straight up war crime?
CraftyGiant
Russia uses the war crimes list like a bingo card.
Turbogoat
RIP Pete. I knew him from Mosul a few years previous. He's a deadset legend. Fuck you Putin.
TheBetterVeteran
Fuckin Hooah. Fairly certain we busted the same doors if you were in Mosul. Another fuckin name for the annual shot list. Til Valhalla.
penzick
Wow. I wish I could do more than just upvote you. My most sincere condolences.

You still in the area?

You're not cool, clever, smart or a good person. Get help.

A lot of foreign volunteers dying recently. RIP. Ugly situation at the moment. Fucking scumbag Russia.
Mazena
Yep, fuck Putin. I really hope he'll suffer a stroke soon.
PrincessBride1
Russia is a terrorist nation. They bomb, then bomb the same area after giving time for medics to rush in. Several of them have been medics.
TZO2k15
Don't forget our scumbag half of America… We should export our own gQp extremists to Russia, Siberia specifically…
TheWhoamater
Without equipment or aid
penzick
On the one hand, they died for the noblest of causes (selfless giving); on the other hand, they died for the worst (Putin's war). So tragic.
Seanspeed
It is awful. But also, Ukraine is seemingly throwing more foreign legion at the frontlines in Bakhmut. Not cynically, but because they
Seanspeed
are genuinely trying to put good troops up there. Ukraine is still lacking the equipment to really repel such attacks, though. It sucks.
Ash321
I think this guy was in a series about combat medics in afghanistan, or he has just one of those faces..
AustinZee
I was gona say, pretty sure I remember seeing him.
gravediggerschicken
He was.
penzick
Looks like you were right and @Trimule
found a preview of the documentary: /gallery/zs6xmQR/comment/2303983389/1
StrokerAce27
I think it was a vice series. "Hunting Isis" if I recall. And yes, that's him. Dude was a hero then and just kept being a hero.
penzick
He did serve two tours there as a Marine so it wouldn't surprise me.
Ash321
Remember him because I thought he was an amazing and good guy..
TK421isAFK
The Marine went to Ukraine to work as a medic, not a soldier. He is definitely a great guy. Yes, IS, present tense. He will be remembered.
penzick
Based on what he did with his (all too short) life, it certainly seems he was.
Ash321
Close, he was in Iraq apparently
gesel
Yes, working in Mosul, based in Erbil.
penzick
Seems he was in both. Either way, it's a senseless and tragic loss.
mksthomas
Marines don’t have medics, they use the Navy for that.
Bearjahud
Marines *are* part of the navy. Signed - a former Army medic, with plenty of love for corpsmen.
Trimule
He was not a medic in USMC -rifleman. He trained & went to Iraq to served there as a medic to help rather than harm. Really good guy.
mksthomas
From a former squid, thanks man. You good?
Bearjahud
Oh I'm gravy these days. I'm a lucky* gal, got to retire at 11 years with 100% from the VA. Retired just before covid started, so didn't 1/
Bearjahud
Become a nurse (saw how that shit was going quick), but I get to do equipment maintenance and lead an advocacy team for a corporation. 2/
